Email: [email protected] Abstract. The eastern shovelnose ray (Aptychotrema rostrata) is a medium-sized coastal batoid endemic to the eastern coast of Australia. It is the most common elasmobranch incidentally caught in the Queensland east coast otter trawl fishery, Australia’s largest penaeid-trawl fishery. Despite this, age and growth studies on this species are lacking. The present study estimated the growth parameters and age-at-maturity for A. rostrata on the basis of sampling conducted in southern Queensland, Australia. This study showed that A. rostrata exhibits slow growth and late maturity, which are common life- history strategies among elasmobranchs. Length-at-age data were analysed within a Bayesian framework and the von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) best described these data. The growth parameters were estimated as L0 ¼ 193 mm À1 TL, k ¼ 0.08 year and LN ¼ 924 mm TL. Age-at-maturity was found to be 13.3 years and 10.0 years for females and males respectively. The under-sampling of larger, older individuals was overcome by using informative priors, reducing bias in the growth and maturity estimates. -

Proposal Inclusion of the two species commonly referred to as the white-spotted wedgefish, Rhynchobatus australiae and Rhynchobatus djiddensis, in Appendix II in accordance with Article II paragraph 2(a) of the Convention and satisfying Criterion A and B in Annex 2a of Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. It is known, or can be inferred or projected, that the regulation of trade in the species is necessary to avoid it becoming eligible for inclusion in Appendix I in the near future: Rapid recent declines in populations of Rhynchobatus australiae and Rhynchobatus djiddensis of 80% or more, meeting Appendix I listing criteria for marine species of low productivity, are already documented in some regions (e.g., Jabado et al. 2017; Jabado 2018). Using the precautionary approach where data is lacking, and given the global footprint of tangle and gill net fisheries, similar declines are likely throughout much of the species range. -

The southern banded guitarfish, Zapteryx xyster, and the Velez ray, Raja velezi, are two endemic elasmobranchs in the eastern Tropical Pacific that are commonly caught by the bottom-trawl fishery. Reproductive cycles of these batoids were inferred from the hepatosomatic and gonadosomatic indexes (males and females) and the oviductal gland width and the yolk follicle diameter (females) of mature specimens collected along the Pacific of Costa Rica between 2010 and 2011. Z. xyster females have a partially defined annual cycle with one reproductive peak in June and July, with most neonates and gravid females occurring during December and January (beginning of the dry season). The gestation period of Z. xyster can range between four and six months; males are probably capable of mating continuously throughout the year. Females and males of R. velezi have a continuous reproductive cycle with no clear peaks. -
