The species is now extinct or severely depleted in many former parts of its range and is protected in some other range states where populations persist. The likelihood of collecting substantial new biological information is now low. Here, we review all available life history infor- mation on size, age and growth, reproductive biology, and demography as a resource for popula- tion assessment and demographic modelling. We also revisit a subset of historical data from the 1970s to examine the maternal size−litter size relationship. All available information on life history is derived from the Indo-West Pacific (i.e. northern Australia) and the Western Atlantic (i.e. Lake Nicaragua-Río San Juan system in Central America) subpopulations. P. pristis reaches a maxi- mum size of at least 705 cm total length (TL), size-at-birth is 72−90 cm TL, female size-at-maturity is reached by 300 cm TL, male size-at-maturity is 280−300 cm TL, age-at-maturity is 8−10 yr, longevity is 30−36 yr, litter size range is 1−20 (mean of 7.3 in Lake Nicaragua), and reproductive periodicity is suspected to be biennial in Lake Nicaragua (Western Atlantic) but annual in Aus- tralia (Indo-West Pacific). -

Kyne & Pierre Feutry NERP Marine Biodiversity Hub Project 2.4 (Supporting Management of Listed and Rare Species) Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods Charles Darwin University Darwin NT 0909, Australia Email: [email protected] Introduction The Largetooth Sawfish Pristis pristis is wide-ranging in tropical waters with distinct geographically-separated populations in the Western Atlantic, Eastern Atlantic, Eastern Pacific and Indo-West Pacific. It was until recently referred to as P. microdon (Freshwater Sawfish) in the Indo-West Pacific and P. perotteti in the Atlantic before research showed these to be synonymous with P. pristis (Faria et al. 2013). Northern Australia represents one of the last strongholds of a species not only once widespread in the Indo-West Pacific, but widespread in many tropical waters. Here, the available life history information on the Largetooth Sawfish is compiled and summarised. Much of this was published under the previous names P. microdon and P. perotteti. The species’ life history is characterised by parameters such as late age at maturity, long lifespan and low fecundity, which results in a low intrinsic rate of population increase (Simpfendorfer 2000; Moreno Iturria 2012). This life history is generally consistent with that of many large elasmobranchs (sharks and rays). For such a wide-ranging and conspicuous species, life history is poorly understood and available information is patchy. For example, the only dedicated reproductive studies were undertaken in the Lake Nicaragua-Río San Juan system in Central America (hereafter referred to as ‘Lake Nicaragua’) (Thorson 1976, 1982), and the vast majority of life history information originates from either Lake Nicaragua or northern Australia (northwest Western Australia and the Queensland Gulf of Carpentaria) (e.g. -

Masud Rana and Mohammad Abdul Baki* Department of Zoology, Jagannath University, Dhaka-1100, Bangladesh Abstract: There is a significant lack of data regarding the biodiversity of elasmobranchs in the territorial waters of Bangladesh, since that sharks and rays are not targeted by commercial fishing industry, but rather encountered as a by- catch. This paper updated the diversity of elasmobranchs in the territorial waters of Bangladesh. The study was carried out to identify two coastal areas of Patharghata, Barguna and Cox's Bazar between October, 2015 and September, 2016. Using fish landing station survey techniques, total 20 species of elasmobranch were encountered, including eight species of sharks and 12 species of batoids, under 14 genera, ten families. This is the most expended field based records of elasmobranch fishes of Bangladesh. Key words: Elasmobranch, assessment, diversity, shark, skate, ray INTRODUCTION Elasmobranchs have been evolving independently for at least 450 million years and, by the Carboniferous period, they seem to have developed a life- history pattern similar to that seen today. From a practical point of view the life- history pattern of elasmobranchs make this group of animals extremely susceptible to over fishing (Harold et al. 1990). The marine fisheries sector of Bangladesh plays a significant role in the county’s economic growth through provision of employment in coastal area and providing source of protein for the population but shark fisheries (sharks and rays) are artisanal fisheries in Bangladesh. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract. The eastern shovelnose ray (Aptychotrema rostrata) is a medium-sized coastal batoid endemic to the eastern coast of Australia. It is the most common elasmobranch incidentally caught in the Queensland east coast otter trawl fishery, Australia’s largest penaeid-trawl fishery. Despite this, age and growth studies on this species are lacking. The present study estimated the growth parameters and age-at-maturity for A. rostrata on the basis of sampling conducted in southern Queensland, Australia. This study showed that A. rostrata exhibits slow growth and late maturity, which are common life- history strategies among elasmobranchs. Length-at-age data were analysed within a Bayesian framework and the von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) best described these data. The growth parameters were estimated as L0 ¼ 193 mm À1 TL, k ¼ 0.08 year and LN ¼ 924 mm TL. Age-at-maturity was found to be 13.3 years and 10.0 years for females and males respectively. The under-sampling of larger, older individuals was overcome by using informative priors, reducing bias in the growth and maturity estimates. -

However, here we report the capture of 2 individuals from the north coast of Peru, indicating that this species is still extant in Peruvian waters. Both individuals were adult-sized and their encounters occurred during the austral summer, which could indicate a seasonal presence in those waters. Gillnets are still a major threat for the species as both specimens were incidentally captured with this gear. Our finding highlights the need for continuous research, awareness, and legal protection of this species. Species Composition, Commercial Landings, Distribution and Some Aspects of Biology of Guitarfish and Wedgefish (Class Pisces: Order Rhinopristiformes) from Pakistan

It is estimated that their commercial landings ranged between 4,206 m. tons in 1981 to 403 metric tons in 2011. Analysis of the landing data from Karachi Fish Harbor (the largest fish landing center in Pakistan) revealed that seven species of guitarfish and wedgefish are landed (January 2019-February 2020 data). Granulated guitarfish (Glaucostegus granulatus) contributed about 61.69 % in total annual landings of this group followed by widenose guitarfish (G. obtusus) contributing about 23.29 % in total annual landings of guitarfish and wedgefish. Annandale’s guitarfish (Rhinobatos annandalei) and bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma) contributed 7.32 and 5.97 % in total annual landings respectively. Spotted guitarfish (R. punctifer), Halavi ray (G. halavi), smoothnose wedgefish (Rhynchobatus laevis) and Salalah guitarfish (Acroteriobatus salalah) collectively contributed about 1.73 % in total annual landings. Smoothnose wedgefish (R. laevis) is rarest of all the members of Order Rhinopristiformes. G. granulatus, G. obtusus, R. ancylostoma, G. halavi and R. laevis are critically endangered according to IUCN Red List whereas A. salalah is near threatened and R. annandalei is data deficient. There are no aimed fisheries for guitarfish and wedgefish in Pakistan but these fishes are mainly caught as by-catch of bottom-set gillnetting and shrimp trawling. -

Frequently, dried rostra (saws) are the only material available to represent an historical occurrence, yet traditional methods of species identification of data- deficient rostra (rostral tooth counts) are unreliable. We evaluated the utility of morphometric characters for the identification of specimens from 2 private collections totaling 41 rostra and rep- resenting 4 species: Anoxypristis cuspidata, Pristis pectinata, P. pristis, and P. zijsron. Rostra were acquired as available and the sample is likely representative of sawfishes globally. Data on 9 mor- phometric and meristic variables were collected, 5 of which were evaluated using principal com- ponent analysis (PCA). PCA of the mensural data accounted for 87% of the variance with the first 2 principal components. Principal component 1 (PCI) was explained by 4 variables and PCII by a single variable. This indicated that all 5 variables were taxonomically important. Spatial relation- ships of points were consistent with putative identifications based on available data.
