It is also the world's 80th largest by area and world's 51st largest by population. It measures 240 kilometres long from end to end and 100 kilometres wide at its widest point, with Turkey. The population of Cyprus is about 1.18 million and is founded in 16 of August 1960. Cities of Cyprus: • Nicosia • Limassol • Larnaca • Pafos • Kerynia • Ammohostos The beginning The repeated rejections by the British of Greek Cypriot demands for enosis led to armed resistance organized by a group known as the National Organization of Cypriot Struggle, or EOKA.EOKA, led by the Greek-Cypriot commander George Grivas, systematically targeted British colonial Evagoras Pallikaridis authorities. Many people fight at this organization. Many of them plain people like all of us, also many students revolted and died for the country that they wanted to see free. Grigoris Afxentiou George Grivas Imprisoned Craves During the 1955-59 struggle for the liberation of Cyprus from the British yoke the colonial rulers constructed in the Nicosia Central Prisons a small cemetery which has gone down in history as the "Imprisoned Craves". The heroes who died on the gallows did not break despite the horrible and inhuman physical and mental tortures to which they were subjected from the time of their arrest until the time of their execution; they endured their terrible ordeal with a high morale and unshakeable faith.

    Dear Oenophile, The Cyprus Oenophile Association delivers a series of lessons which offers the participant all the basic knowledge needed to appreciate wine and its history. We are in the pleasant position to inform you that since 2016, these lessons have been certified by the Cyprus Certification Company and the participants will be certified as Wine Connoisseur having successfully passed a written test. The next series of lessons with be done online due to the restrictive measures in place due to COVID-19. There will be five online evening lessons, each lasting 3 hours, to cover the theoretical part. Winetasting and other practical aspects such as serving, will be taught in two sessions lasting 3 hours each at a winery and at a restaurant, when physical presence is allowed. The dates will be decided by the majority of the participants once enough participants enroll. Outline of the lessons: 1.     ● Written by Jancis Robinson 3 May 2017 The Cyprus wine revolution To complement Dr José Vouillamoz's fascinating report on discovering indigenous grape varieties on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, I'm publishing my notes on a presentation on the recent Cypriot wine revolution made last October by Dr Caroline Gilby MW, one of the five finalists in our recent wine writing competition. Her lecture and the tasting that followed it (see my 42 tasting notes below) took place in Vintners' Hall in London, where the then king of Cyprus was one of the five kings entertained to a feast by the vintners and aldermen in 1363. (For much of its early history, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust was based next to Vintners' Hall in a building known as Five Kings House.) Last time I studied the wine scene on Cyprus in any detail, it was dominated by four big wineries located on the coast, far from the vineyards but convenient for the tankers that used to ship out vast quantities of a fortified wine of dubious quality, known, until the Spanish had their protective way, as 'Cyprus sherry'. The island's wine industry is still very much work in progress but the big transformation has been that the island now has 60-odd much smaller wineries typically processing 3,000 to 30,000 tonnes of grapes a year, run by well-travelled, well-trained young specialists.
