Released as a limited edition of 500 LPs in 1992, the album featured handmade covers and blank labels to keep expenses as low as possible. Their other albums hadn’t sold much, why would this one? As fate would have it, the band wound up releasing an album chock full of gems Pollard had stockpiled, and for the first time sounded distinctly like the band that fans have since come to love. "Propeller" also marks the return of Tobin Sprout to the GBV fold, along with an increased songwriting presence. "Propeller" is a hell of a ride, and remains one of the most important albums in the band's discography. The vinyl edition has been out of print for a decade, and features different cover art than previous pressings. The CD edition has been out of print for a minute as well, and is now housed in digipak format, also with a new, unique cover from one of the original pressings. COHEN, TIM "You Are Still Here" (BOBO BBI020 LP March 26 street date. At this point, Tim Cohen is something akin to a Songwriter Laureate of San Francisco. He has observed from his attic window as wave after wave of musical trend has visited upon the Pacific shores, only to wash back into the ether. “You are Still Here” is a taut, suspenseful collection of dynamic, timeless songs. Ranging from the reluctantly hopeful Rhodes-driven gospel of “Rage On” to the psychedelic kraut bombast of “Dadaist Friend”, the album was recorded over three week-long sessions at Crown Lanes (Denver, CO) with Cohen’s longtime collaborator James Barone (Beach House) behind the boards and the drum kit. Handing over production duties to Barone allowed the full range of both artists’ talents to shine, and the result is polished and sonically satisfying, yet somehow still slightly deranged and “outsider”. Cohen’s vocal melodies have never been stronger, now bolstered by horn flourishes (Andrew Byars) and the lush choral vocals of Noelle Fiore (Magic Trick). Dramatic choruses give way to pensive quietude with ease, and the journey is narrated expertly by the various keyboards of Connor Birch (Flaural). Barone’s keen ear and Cohen’s more focused songwriting approach are a magical marriage. The result “You are Still Here”, is a great opportunity for us to return to the art of album listening. On the heels of Midwife's 2020 sophomore album, "Forever", The Flenser is pleased to offer a new vinyl edition of her debut "Like Author, Like Daughter", remastered as a double LP in a gatefold jacket. "Like Author, Like Daughter" is a portrait of Madeline Johnston's final year as a resident of Denver's famed DIY venue Rhinoceropolis, which closed in a rash of politically motivated assaults on creative spaces across the United States. The album internalizes loss, addiction, and abandonment and wrings them through distorted power chords, melancholy leads, and sheets of drone to create building, aching monuments to past-selves and lost relationships as positivist statements of resilience and self-love. It's a record that is impossible to listen to without a lump in the throat.

Featuring the beautiful disco-funk-classic "Space Talk", Asha's ethereal soaring vocals take us on a journey that almost mirrors her eclectic career. The track was championed by a wide-range of musical scenes and movements, and over space and time it has been commandeered as their own. You would hear it played by David Mancuso at the now mythical underground New York party "The Loft", in the most discerning disco nightclubs across the globe, in the Rare Groove scene, and also being sampled by hip-hop heavyweights such as The Notorious B.I.G./P. Diddy, and The Pharcyde. SAHM, DOUG "Hell Of A Spell" (RETROWORLD) FLOATLP6409 LP March 5 street date. The late great Doug Sahm was born in San Antonio, Texas. He was a child prodigy in country music but became a significant figure in roots rock and other genres as well. Sahm is considered one of the most important figures in what is identified as Tex Mex music. Proficient on multiple instruments, he was the founder and leader of the 1960s rock and roll band, the Sir Douglas Quintet. He would later co-found the Texas Tornados with Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender, and Flaco Jimenez as well as Los Super Seven. "Hell Of A Spell" was recorded at the end of the 1970s, and was originally released in the UK in 1980 trying to ride the then New Wave scene. SOLER, TOTI "Toti Soler" (MUNSTER) MR413 LP March 19 street date. Like a long drag of hashish in the morning when the alarm clock rings in the open air, the synthesis that works in this album is aromatic, hypnotic, luminescent… somewhere between Hispalis and the Catalan Mediterranean. Spanish guitar and flamenco metonymies flourish on this transitional instrumental work that ablutions in flamenco waters, scented with folk-blues salts. This 1973 album is seminal in creating flamenco fusion. The arid but magnetic notes of the first track on the album, ‘Sardana Flamenca’ delve deeper into the subconscious, which Soler recorded on his own with his Spanish guitar, except the electric pieces where members of the band OM helped out. Released in 1977 on Soul Jazz Pop, a subsidiary label of Mavuthela Music Company/Gallo, Teaspoon And The Waves' self-titled album is an absolute masterpiece. Best known for the song "Oh Yeh Soweto", which is an astonishing adaptation of Lamont Dozier's anthem "Going Back to My Roots", this track has become a contemporary underground club classic in recent times and has been featured in sets from a cross-section of DJs. With such a massive calling card song, it could be easy to write off the album as a typical one-tracker (like so many records often are), but that is a long way from the truth. Each of the remaining four tracks are super strong. Saxophonist Teaspoon Ndlela has had an amazing and rich musical career. Releasing albums on records labels Soul Jazz Pop, Hit Special, Gallo GRC, alongside working with and writing for South African artists such as Mpharanyana, Stimela, Sipho Gumede and Sgu. He also features on the Paul Simon track "Gumboots", taken from the iconic "Graceland" project. TOREADORS "Thembi/Gwinyitshe" (MR BONGO) MRB7172 7" March 26 street date. This 1972 recording by The Toreadors, a one-off session group, was produced by Ray Nkwe who worked as an independent producer for several different companies and was responsible for organising many African jazz-oriented sessions in the 1970s and early 80s. On first hearing the A-side ‘Thembi’ (written by Ray Nkwe) you'll wonder why you haven't heard this song before, but simultaneously be struck with a sense of instant familiarity. It has a loose floating jazz vibe with echoes of 60s hippy, psychedelic soul-jazz qualities, and elements that remind us of acts such as The Deirdre Wilson Tabac. The vocal deliveries are stunning, hauntingly beautiful, and from a place where it is hard to pinpoint just where this song originates. The B-side, ‘Gwinyitshe‘, is also absolute fire. This song has gained more coverage and notoriety among South African music fans/collectors and DJs over the years. It is a deep, pulsing soul-jazz-funk groove with another exceptional vocal performance that is relaxed yet engaging and spiritual, whilst managing to surf the instrumentation to perfection. WITCH "Introduction (original (NOW-AGAIN) NA5200 LP private press version)" February 19 street date. Archival reissue of the private-press, first issue of the album that launched the Zamrock movement in 1972. Completely different recordings of the songs from the better-known Zambia Music Parlour album. Originally pressed in a run of just a few hundred copies and sold by the band at their live shows, this is the first ever reissue of this garage-rock masterpiece.

Cibo Matto was a Japanese-American band formed by Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori in New York in 1994. Their debut album "Viva! It therefore also sounds quite different from the rest of the Cibo Matto catalogue: the album is best described as a trip hop fused with pop and alternative hiphop, and its lyrical subject matter is mostly concerned with food. As huge fans of the early 90s Seattle trash rock sound, stumbling upon The Night Kings in a sea of stale grunge and alternative pap in 1992 was just what the doctor ordered. Following the Rob Vasquez trail soon led to discovering his previous band The Nights And Days from the mid-late 80s, as well as numerous modern side projects, including The Gorls. The Gorls blasted out of the gate on their own new imprint, DOPE Records in early 1993, and quickly followed up their debut split 7" with only one more 3-track EP before completely disappearing, and leaving a huge void in their wake. Luckily, Gorls member Dawn Johnson was sitting on a full LP's worth of Gorls tracks recorded with Johnny Vinyl in 1992-93, which we can now present for your adoring ear-holes. With 8 of the 12 tracks here previously unreleased, it's a crucial and desperately needed blast. After the short, bright light on the musical horizon from the other-worldly and alien-borne Zolar X in the mid 1970s had fallen away, original members Zory Zenith and Ed Dorn formed another short-lived outfit, Aurora Pushups, and forged ahead with their original material to try their hand at a modernized sound. By 1979 they had solidified their debut tracks and self-released a 7" single to moderate fanfare and enthusiastic radio play, but this early lineup wouldn’t last as Zory's role began to fade. Soon after Zenith's exit, Ed took the reins and put together the frequently-changing band that would record and perform around San Francisco over the next few years as simply Pushups. As one of many bands that only lasted for a quick flash at the and of the 1970s, they didn'’t get to tour much, and although they only had one other self-released 7" single in 1979, the wealth of their material has been sitting, waiting for its moment. Thanks to music archivists Ricky Maymi and through the Zolar X connections with Chuck Nolan, this incredible unreleased material was sent in HoZac's direction, and we've got a full LP's worth of sizzling, unreleased, power pop gold ready for you to gorge upon. University Challenged are Ajay Saggar ("Bhajan Bhoy"), Oli Heffernan ("Ivan The Tolerable"), and Kohhei Matsuda ("Bo Ningen"). The trio began in 2019, playing shows in Holland, where they gained a reputation for delivering highly dynamic sense-rattling shows, ranging from gentle melodic orchestral spinouts to epic power jams, all backed by beautiful self-made films in the background. The plan had always been to record an album, and get the collective musical force and spirit cemented to vinyl. Many months of hard work and focus paid dividends with the majestic eight-track double album Oh Temple! ready to be delivered to the world at large. After Gammy (2014) the band embarked on a different stylistic and compositional path. The esoteric doom mixed with the tipically sludgy attitude, give to their personal existential ordeal a picture in which Simone Tesser’s lyrics fit perfectly. Blues singer and harmonica player Brian Knight (1939-2001) is counted as one of the initial members of The Rolling Stones. Co-founder of Brian Jones first band together with Ian Stewart and Dick Taylor (later Pretty Things) among others. Musical disagreement with Jones, who fancied Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry while Knight was a Muddy Waters follower, led to his departure from the group - later to be replaced by Jagger and Richards. He formed his own "Blues By Six" band, frequently with Charlie Watts on drums, and spent the following years touring and playing London clubs. In the seventies he continued with Bradford-Knight Blues Band. Always a high profile act on the English blues circuit Knight has performed with many known artists through the decades, as Rick Wakeman, Peter Green, Paul Jones, Zoot Money, Ronnie Lane, Charie Watts, Chris Farlowe...and many more. After two successful decades of touring and performing he finally got to record his debut in 1981on the independent label PVK Records. Kalita Records announce the first ever official reissue of Muchos Plus's highly sought-after 1979 12" reggae disco masterpiece Nassau's Discos. Over forty years after initial release, and long the envy of collectors, DJs, and dance music connoisseurs, the time is now right to share the music and the group's story once more. Originally privately released in a modest run-on bandleader Rudy Mills's own label U-Solo Records, the single features both the long and short versions of their devastating disco take on The Beginning of the End's smash hit "Funky Nassau", plus their own reggae funk slow jam "Love Misunderstood". With original copies selling for up to £500 on the second-hand market, Kalita Records come to the rescue, offering a loud and remastered 12" single for all. In addition, the record is accompanied by extensive liner notes based on interviews with Rudy, and never before seen contemporary photos. OS MUTANTES "Mutantes (bottle green)” (VINYL LOVERS) 990212 LP February 26 street date. One album into their career in 1969, Mutantes showed few signs of musical burnout after turning in one of the oddest LPs released in the '60s. Similar to its predecessor, Mutantes relies on an atmosphere of experimentation and continual musical collisions, walking a fine line between innovation and pointless genre exercises. The lead track ("Dom Quixote") has the same focus on stylistic cut-and-paste as their debut LP's first track ("Panis et Circenses"). Among the band's musical contemporaries, Mutantes sounds similar only to songs like the Who's miniature suite "A Quick One While He's Away" -- though done in three minutes instead of nine, and much more confusing given the language barrier. The album highlights ("Nao Va Se Perder por Ai") and ("Dois Mil e Um") come with what sounds like a typically twisted take on roots music (both Brazilian and American), complete with banjo, accordion, and twangy vocals. Though there are several other enjoyable tracks, including "Magica" and a slap-happy stomp called "Rita Lee," there's a palpable sense that the experimentation here isn't serving much more than its own ends. If the first album's relentless eclecticism did in fact occasionally result in dry passages, it's especially true here.

"Été 85" is a story of friendship and love between two teenage boys at a seaside resort in Normandy in the mid-1980s, directed by French filmmaker François Ozon. "Été 85" is the gay summer-of-love story to end them all and boasts a killer soundtrack including The Cure and is scored by non-other than Air's JB Dunckel. The movie is already considered the French answer to the tremendous success movie "Call Me By Your Name"."Eté 85" is in the running for a César selection of the best soundtrack. In 1994, the South London collective Archive was formed by Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths together with female singer Roya Arab and young rapper Rosko John. Unfortunately, a few months later, they broke up, however Darius and Danny regrouped and continued releasing more Archive albums. Their 1996 debut album "Londinium" features a very strong mix of trip-hop, electronica, string arrangements, and female vocals from Roya Arab. Rosko John's tough-spoken words are very similar to Tricky, Future Sound Of London and Massive Attack. The original 1996 issue only came out as a limited edition advance release, and has steadily built in reputation as a rare and expensive record to get a hold of. Fun fact: the song "Londinium" was featured on the Playstation 1 demo-disc and the music video was directed by Matt Cook. This 25th anniversary edition of "Londinium" is packed in a gatefold sleeve, and includes a 4-page booklet with song lyrics and credits.
