KEVIN KILLIAN / Bowering's Fragments You'd have to have a heart of stone to resist the amorous appeal of George Bowering's 1990 novel Harry's Fragments. An accomplished storyteller, Bowering surprised us yet again with this enigmatic, genre-bending blend of thriller and nouvelle vague. Throughout he plays the showman's ancient trick of never letting us see him sweat, combining a complex plot with a throwaway style, while finding room in the slim volume to evoke dozens of far-flung locations and many, many sexy women. What's that Bond movie with the most Bond girls in it? Harry's Fragments makes that one look like a sexless sort of William Wellman actioner. (Goldfinger and Thunderball tie with five apiece, but in comparison Harry's Fragments makes them seem like chaste all-male retreats set in Mount Athos in northern Greece.) The surplus of women in Harry's Fragments is perhaps a tip of the hat to Bond, or to Len Deighton's spy hero, Harry Palmer. Perhaps Harry Palmer or Harry Lime inspired the creation of Bowering's Harry, this mysterious traveler. I keep thinking he's Canadian, he's so critical of other nations, but I find that nowhere does the text actually say that Harry's a Canadian, though he lives in Vancouver certainly. No wait, in the last fifth of the book we are told that he is a "Canadian in a manner of speaking." His profession is similarly unclear, but we are told again and again he is neither a spy nor a writer, at least, not by nature. -

Introduction Contextualizing the tension between the ‘American Dream’ and Marxism in pre-blacklist Hollywood The relationship between labour and capital in Hollywood was never noted for its harmony. Nevertheless, the class conflict within the American film industry usually resulted in workable compromises, albeit within a political framework limited by the prohibitive moral strictures of the Production Code of 1935 and the Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA). Even the establishment of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) in 1938, known as the Dies Committee after its first chairman Martin Dies Jr. (D-TX), did not significantly alter the uneasy co-existence between the Hollywood Left talent and old studio moguls. That is, not before the post-war reincarnation of HUAC, which left no room for political compromise: from 1947, the Committee went after Hollywood in earnest. Sometimes referred to as the Second Red Scare – the first followed the Russian Revolution – the political repression that followed in its wake is more commonly associated with Joseph McCarthy, a junior congressman from Wisconsin, who spearheaded the government attack on any political and cultural manifestation of un-Americanism (more precisely, anti-capitalism). This unconstitutional attack on freedom of expression at the hands of the Congress marked a watershed not only in the relationship between labour and capital in Hollywood, but in the evolution of the dominant political aesthetics of American cinema. The Development of the British Conspiracy Thriller 1980-1990 Paul S. Lynch This thesis is submitted to the University of Hertfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. January 2017 Abstract This thesis adopts a cross-disciplinary approach to explore the development of the conspiracy thriller genre in British cinema during the 1980s. There is considerable academic interest in the Hollywood conspiracy cycle that emerged in America during the 1970s. Films such as The Parallax View (Pakula, 1975) and All the President’s Men (Pakula, 1976) are indicative of the genre, and sought to reflect public anxieties about perceived government misdeeds and misconduct within the security services. In Europe during the same period, directors Costa-Gavras and Francesco Rosi were exploring similar themes of state corruption and conspiracy in films such as State of Siege (1972) and Illustrious Corpses (1976). This thesis provides a comprehensive account of how a similar conspiracy cycle emerged in Britain in the following decade. We will examine the ways in which British film-makers used the conspiracy form to reflect public concerns about issues of defence and national security, and questioned the measures adopted by the British government and the intelligence community to combat Soviet subversion during the last decade of the Cold War. Unlike other research exploring espionage in British film and television, this research is concerned exclusively with the development of the conspiracy thriller genre in mainstream cinema. This has been achieved using three case studies: Defence of the Realm (Drury, 1986), The Whistle Blower (Langton, 1987) and The Fourth Protocol (MacKenzie, 1987). -

Epicurean Disdain and the Rhetoric of Defiance: Colonel March of Scotland Yard Dave Mann, Independent Scholar, UK In the 1950s and early 1960s, the lower reaches of the British film industry underwent a profound transition -- it shifted from the production of programme fillers and supporting features to making TV/Film series (called telefilm in America). This transition has yet to undergo sustained critical scrutiny principally because this emergent form falls between two, compartmentalised, areas of scholarship -- Film Studies and Television Studies. Yet these early series are deserving of our attention because, firstly, they became a staple of the domestic film production and, secondly, because they articulate a series of complex ideological engagements. One of the most important of these dialogic exchanges was with the American television market. Primarily this was because British series could not recoup their costs by supplying the fledgling indigenous television sector alone and thus had to achieve American distribution. Far earlier than her British counterparts, the American arriviste Hannah Weinstein saw the potential for producing TV/Film series in Britain where production costs were significantly lower. She also recognised a shift in the American market from anthologies made up of discrete episodes drawing on a variety of genres and fronted by former Hollywood stars, such as the domestically-produced Douglas Fairbanks Presents (1953-56), to more economic series which exploited a regular cast and standard sets. To date, accounts of Weinstein's work focus on her role as head of Sapphire Films producing internationally successful swashbucklers beginning with The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955-59; see Neale, 2003: 245-257 and 2005a: 73-87). -
