About the Community Assistance Program The Mission: CAP serves the Lowcountry by assisting nonprofits and municipalities to reach their goals thus strengthening our community. CAP is one of several outreach programs at the College of Charleston. The Vision: Through collaboration with nonprofit and local government administrators, CAP fulfills its mission to make a positive impact on our community beyond the College of Charleston campus. The History: The Community Assistance Program (CAP) started with a mission to provide technical assistance to local government in 1987. As the nonprofit sector expanded in the Lowcountry, CAP broadened its mission to include assisting nonprofit organizations. The support services CAP offers are at low or no cost and can be tailored to the needs of the organization or municipality. Program Structure: The Community Assistance Program is a part of the Masters of Public Administration program at the College of Charleston. Janet Key, the Director of CAP, has been an active public servant and faculty member. Key instructs courses on the fundamentals of nonprofit management at the College of Charleston, where she has been for nearly 30 years. The graduate assistants are a team of four highly qualified students currently enrolled in the MPA program. The CAP graduate assistants work with organizations in their fields of interest while completing coursework in the MPA program. CAP provides services to all organizations that believe they could benefit from the extra help. Services include: Capacity Building, Strategic Planning, and Organizational Assessment Fundraising, Marketing, and Grant Research Program Development and Evaluation Board and Volunteer Training Survey and Quantitative Research Data Collection Budgeting and Financial Management Like CAP on Facebook: www.facebook.com/CommunityAssistanceProgram.cofc Visit CAP on the web: www.puba.cofc.edu/community-assistance-program Charleston Area Nonprofits Community Assistance Program 2 Methods This project began as an idea that would allow for organizations in Charleston County to better utilize the resources within the Lowcountry. As the project progressed, CAP noticed the redundancies within the different categories. It is the hope of CAP that this directory can grow with the community and aid in collaboration, thereby streamlining the efforts of organizations throughout the Lowcountry. In order to determine which organizations to include on the list of nonprofits, CAP used the IRS Exempt Organization Select Check tool to identify organizations eligible for tax deductible charitable contributions. This tool resulted in a list of over 800 registered nonprofits. From this, we gathered information on all nonprofits currently in good standing. The specific data gathered is outlined below. The descriptive information provided by the IRS Exempt Organization Select Check includes: EIN (Employee Identification Number) Legal Name City State Country Deductibility Status (not included on final report) To augment this list and create a user-friendly directory, CAP added other useful characteristics: Street Address Zip Code Phone Number E-mail Website Mission Statement Signature Event The information that was gathered in addition to the IRS Exempt Organization Select Check was checked and cross checked on Guide Star and Google. If none of the aforementioned data was found after these searches, the organization was removed from the list. Organizations were also removed from the list if they no longer operate within the Charleston area or do not provide services within the Charleston area. Information that is provided in this directory was taken from a combination of the organization’s official website (if available), Guide Star, and the organization’s IRS 990 form. Charleston Area Nonprofits Community Assistance Program 3 Limitations and Considerations for Future Research The greatest limitation to this directory is comprehensiveness and current information. CAP used the data available from the federal IRS – this data may have inaccurate or incomplete information. Under the regulations for nonprofit reporting, if the nonprofit makes less than $5,000 a year or less than $25,000 in five years, the nonprofit does not need to send in a 990 tax form. Moreover, nonprofits have, with extension, ten and a half months to file their 990. It takes three years for the IRS to revoke exempt status for failure to file tax forms. Because of this, some data collected from these out of date forms may be inaccurate. Another limitation this directory is that not all nonprofits
