  • Johannes Thiele and His Contributions to Zoology. Part 2. Genus-Group Names (Mollusca)
NEMOURIA Occasional Papers of the Delaware Museum of Natural History NUMBER 39 SEPTEMBER 30, 1991 JOHANNES THIELE AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO ZOOLOGY. PART 2. GENUS-GROUP NAMES (MOLLUSCA) Kenneth J. Boss 1 and Rudiger Bieler2 ABSTRACT. This is the second part of a series on the German zoologist Johannes Thiele (1860-1935) and comprises a critical listing of the genus-group taxa which he described as new to malacology. Each of these names is accompanied by author and bibliographic references, original status, type-species with its original binominal spelling and bibliographic source and some data on subsequent taxonomic placements. Thiele introduced a total of 291 such names in the Phylum Mollusca, distributed as follows: 11 Aplacophora; 39 Polyplacophora; 200 Gastropoda (138 Prosobranchia; 20 Opisthobranchia and 42 Pulmonata); 31 Bivalvia; 10 Cephalopoda; there were no new scaphopod or monoplacophoran names. Of these, later authors recognized as valid 85 at the generic level, 110 at the subgeneric level; 71 are considered to be synonyms, and the remaining 25 are unjustified emendations or errors. INTRODUCTION As part of a series on the scientific contributions of Johannes Thiele, the eminent German zoologist, we provide here an alphabetical listing and analysis of all the genus-group taxa introduced by him in his publications on mollusks as delineated by Bieler & Boss (1989). A total of 291 names is included in the following format: (1) genus-group name; (2) author(s); (3) year of publication; (4) condensed bibliographic reference; (5) original status as given by Thiele; (6) subsequent status 1Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, Serial Publication Cambridge, Massachussetts 02138, U.S.A.

Glibertturricula vervoeneni gen. et sp. nov., a species hitherto confused with Fusiturris selysii (de Koninck, 1838), is described from several Rupelfan deposits in Belgium and from Poland. The stratigraphical range comprises the Berg Sands, the Nucula Clay and the Boom Clay Formation (Waasland Clay Member and lower middle part of the Putte Clay Member) in Belgium (typelocality: Kruibeke clay-pit) and the Sand Szczecin Poland. The Polish Neustadt-Magdeburger near in popu- lation differs slightly from the Belgian material but is still considered to the belong to same taxon. M. C. The present knowledge is listed in a table. First (and provisional) results of actual work at some locali- 25 ties in Central Germany will be discussed. A newly discovered rocky shore fauna from the Mammendorf quarry 26 west of Magdeburg is of special interest. Furthermore, a new proposal concerning the lithostratigraphy of Early 27 Oligocene deposits south of Leipzig will be introduced. 28 Schlüsselwörter: Biostratigrafie, Lithostratigrafie, marine Faunen, Mitteldeutschland, Oligozän, Paläogen, 29 Priabon 30 Keywords: Paleogene, Priabonian, Oligocene, marine fauna, lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, Central Germany 31 32 33 1.

R. China 1Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Based on the material deposited in the Marine Biological Museum of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao, the present paper reports 26 turrid species, which belong respectively to three genera of the subfamily Turrinae, including four new species, Gemmula grandigyrata sp. nov., Gemmula flata sp. nov., Lophiotoma pseudocosmoi sp. nov., and L. verticala sp. nov., and four species newly recorded from the China seas. Gemmula grandigyrata sp. nov. is peculiar in the genus in having a large conical protoconch of six whorls; Gemmula flata sp. nov. is similar to the “martini series Powell, 1964” in the shell profile, but can be easily separated from the species of this series by the shell sculpture; Lophiotoma pseudocosmoi sp. nov. differs from the close species of the genus Lophiotoma and a similar species of the genus Gemmula, G. cosmoi (Sykes, 1930), by the peripheral carina and the shell height; Lophiotoma verticala sp. nov looks like a species of genus Fusiturris, F. undatiruga (Bivona, 1832), but differs from the latter by the stronger axial fold, less conspicuous spiral folds, stronger peripheral carina and deeper sinus. Key words: Turridae; Turrinae; Gemmula grandigyrata sp. nov.; Gemmula flata sp. nov.; Lophiotoma pseudocosmoi sp.

  • Exotic Molluscs in the Mediterranean Basin: Current Status and Perspectives
Oceanography and Marine Biology: an Annual Review 2003, 41, 237–277 © R.N. Gibson and R.J.A. Atkinson, Editors Taylor & Francis EXOTIC MOLLUSCS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN: CURRENT STATUS AND PERSPECTIVES SERGE GOFAS1 & ARGYRO ZENETOS2 1Departamento de Biologia animal, Facultad de Ciencias – E-29071 Málaga, Spain e-mail: [email protected] 2National Centre for Marine Research, P.O. Box 712, Mavro Lithari, GR-19013 Anavissos, Greece e-mail: [email protected] Abstract An updated synthesis is presented for the records of introduced Mollusca in the Mediterranean basin. The rationale for taking molluscan records as significant is discussed. The Mediterranean Sea, with some 1800 native species of Mollusca, currently houses 139 exotic species, of which 85 form established populations, 52 are aliens recorded once or twice, and two are questionable. Ten species (the gastropods Cerithium scabridum, Rhinoclavis kochi, Strom- bus persicus and Bursatella leachi and the bivalves Pinctada radiata and Brachidontes pharao- nis in the eastern Mediterranean, the gastropod Rapana venosa and the bivalves Anadara inaequivalvis, Musculista senhousia, and Xenostrobus securis in the northern Adriatic and the western Mediterranean lagoons) are locally invasive. The bulk of the introduced species (118 species, of which 70 are established, 46 aliens, and two questionable) are species of Indo–Pacific origin found mainly in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean. Among these species, some which live in the Suez Canal are most likely to have spread by their own means through this waterway (these are the “lessepsian immigrants” in the most restricted sense). For other species, the intervention of transport by ship hulls or ballast water can be suspected.

Abstract Background: The Neogastropoda is a highly diversified group of predatory marine snails (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda). Traditionally, its monophyly has been widely accepted based on several morphological synapomorphies mostly related with the digestive system. However, recent molecular phylogenetic studies challenged the monophyly of Neogastropoda due to the inclusion of representatives of other caenogastropod lineages (e.g. Littorinimorpha) within the group. Neogastropoda has been classified into up to six superfamilies including Buccinoidea, Muricoidea, Olivoidea, Pseudolivoidea, Conoidea, and Cancellarioidea. Phylogenetic relationships among neogastropod superfamilies remain unresolved.
