pT Lit 003 Rakhshanda Jalil’s translation of Gulzar’s short story Dhuaan wins the inaugural Jawad Memorial Prize for Urdu-English translation The fatal flame alpix 0761 Dr Rakhshanda Jalil Publisher : Hachette UK BA Eng Hons 1984 MH MA Eng 1986 LSR Writer Late last week, it was announced that Delhi-based writer, critic and literary historian Rakhshanda Jalil would be awarded the inaugural Jawad Memorial Prize for Urdu-english translation, instituted in the memory of Urdu poet and scholar Ali Jawad Zaidi by his family, on the occasion of his birth centenary. A recipient of the Padma Shri, the Ghalib Award and the Mir Anis award, Zaidi had to his name several books of ghazals and nazms, scholarly works on Urdu literature, including The History Of Urdu Literature, and was working on a book called Urdu Mein Ramkatha when he died in 2004. Considering that much of Zaidi’s work “served as a bridge between languages and cultures”, his family felt the best way to honour his literary legacy would be to focus on translations. Since the prize was to be given to a short story in translation in the first year, submissions of an unpublished translation of a published Urdu story were sought. While Jalil won the prize, the joint runners-up were Fatima Rizvi, who teaches literature at the University of Lucknow, and Pakistani social scientist and critic Raza Naeem. The judges, authors Tabish Khair and Musharraf Ali Farooqi, chose to award Jalil for her “careful, and even” translation of a story by Gulzar, Dhuaan (Smoke), “which talks about the violence and tragic absurdity of religious prejudice”. -

I am happy to acknowledge that the university where I received my training in the period from 1933 to 1940 also provided the stimulus for its final completion. I am greatly indebted to the personal interest taken in my studies by professor Dr. W. F. Wertheim and Dr. J. M. Pluvier. Without their encouragement, their critical observations and their advice the result would certainly have been of less value than it may be now. The same applies to Mrs. Dr. S. C. L. From the sepoy lines, the uprising spread swiftly to the ordinary people in the town and the surrounding villages. The sepoys captured the bell of arms (a place where the arms and ammunition were stored) and then proceeded to attack and kill the white people and to ransack and burn their bungalows and property. Government buildings – the records office, jail, court, post office, treasury – were all destroyed and plundered. The telegraph line to Delhi was cut. As the evening fell, a group of sepoys rode off towards Delhi. The sepoys arrived at the gates of the LalQila early on the morning of May 11. It was the month of Ramzan, the Muslim holy month of prayer and fasting. The old Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah, had just finished his prayers and meal before the fast began. He heard the commotion and he saw that the sepoys had gathered beneath his window. They told him: “we have come from Meerut after killing all the Englishmen there, because they asked us to bite bullets that were coated with the fat of cows and pigs with our teeth. -

DOI: 10.1057/978-1- 137-54550-3_3 Reading Together: Hindi, Urdu, and English village novels Francesca Orsini (SOAS)* Reading Together How to do a multilingual history of the novel, and why should we even attempt such an enterprise? In her essay 'The aesthetics and politics of "reading together" Moroccan novels in Arabic and French', Karima Laachir lays out the reasons for such an enterprise in the context of Morocco, and several of her arguments are pertinent to North India, too. The multilingual literary field in Morocco is largely disconnected and polarized betweeen Arabic and French, what Abdelfattah Kilito calls ‘split tongue’ and ‘split literature’. This unproductive dichotomy extends to the study of Arabic and French literature, which draws upon ideological views of Arabic as the 'national' language and French as 'foreign' (Laachir, 2015: 8). In critical discourse, the novel has been seen simplistically as a 'foreign import' from French, in the process obscuring, Laachir argues, both its strong ties to pre-modern Moroccan genres such as travel-writing, letter-writing and mixed prose, as well as the more complex trajectory of circulation between Arabic fiction writing in the Mashreq (Egypt and Lebanon in particular) and the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia) (2015: 9-10). Moreover, while the first generation of post-independence Maghrebi writers in French may have agonized over their use of the coloniser’s tongue, the following generation assertively reclaimed French as a Maghrebi language, acculturated and subverted it to serve their own purposes, not just to 'write back' to the former colonizers but also to communicate to each other (Laachir, 2015: 6). -

Journal of Journal of urdu studies 1 (2020) 141-176 URDU STUDIES brill.com/urds The Beauties of Lucknow: An Urdu Photographic Album Kathryn Hansen Professor Emeritus, Department of Asian Studies, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA [email protected] Abstract ʿAbbās ʿAlī of Lucknow published several volumes of photographs which were unique in being accompanied by text in English and Urdu. The Beauties of Lucknow (1874), an album of female performers and costumed actors from the Indar Sabhā, is attributed to him. Based on examination of the rare book in five archival locations, this article accounts for the variations among them. It distinguishes between the photographer’s authorial intentions and the agency of artisans, collectors, and others who altered the artifact at various stages. Comparison of the textual apparatus of the English and Urdu editions reveals the author’s mode of address to different audiences. The Urdu intro- duction, saturated with poetic tropes, provides insight into ways of viewing photo- graphs as formulated among the local cognoscenti. The article proposes that ʿAbbās ʿAlī’s book was meant as a private gift, as well as a publication for wider circulation. I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be; Am an attendant lord, and Urdu-wala one that will do To swell a progress, start a scene or two Or, as in the case here, Exactly three Scene 1 In December 1906, twenty-eight men traveled to Dhaka to represent U.P. at the formation of the All India Muslim League. Two were from Bara Banki, one of them my granduncle, Raja Naushad Ali Khan of Mailaraigunj. Thirty-nine years later, during the winter of 1945-46, I could be seen marching up and down the only main road of Bara Banki with other kids, waving a Muslim League flag and shouting slogans. No, I don’t imply some unbroken trajectory from my granduncle’s trip to my strutting in the street, for the elections in 1945 were in fact based on principles that my granduncle reportedly opposed. It was Uncle Fareed who first informed me that Naushad Ali Khan had gone to Dhaka. Uncle Fareed knew the family lore, and enjoyed sharing it with us boys. In an aunt’s house I came across a fading picture. Seated in a dogcart and dressed in Western clothes and a jaunty hat, he looked like a slightly rotund and mustached English squire. He had 1 been a poet, and one of his couplets was then well known even outside the family. -

235 Samina Awan: Muslim Urban Politics Muslim Urban Politics in Colonial Punjab: Majlis-i-Ahrar’s Early Activism Samina Awan Allama Iqbal Open University, Pakistan ________________________________________________________________ The British annexed Punjab in 1849, and established a new system of administration in form and spirit. They also introduced western education, canal colonies and a modern system of transportation, which had its impact on the urban population. In rural Punjab they collaborated with the landlords and feudal elite to get their support in strengthening the province as ‘grain basket’ for the British Army. The Majlis-i-Ahrar-i-Islam(hereafter MAI) was an urban Muslim organisation, comprised of ex-Khilafatists, trained in agitational politics during the period 1919-1929, many of whom were ex-Congrssites. Ahrar leaders split with the INC over the issue of the Nehru Report in 1929. Soon after the formation of the new party, they decided to participate in INC-led civil disobedience movement of 1930 and were interred in large numbers. The MAI’s platform was based on a united India, but one, which was free from imperial control, anti-feudal, with less economic disparities and had an Islamic system for the Muslims of India. _______________________________________________________________ Introduction A number of religio-political movements emerged from Punjab during the first half of the twentieth century. A study of the history, politics and social structure of Punjab is necessary in order to understand these movements. The Majlis-i- Ahrar-i-Islam (MAI) was founded in 1929 in Lahore, and reflected a unique blend of religion and politics in the multi-cultural province of Punjab in British India. -
A Tribute to Shri A.J. Zaidi
A Tribute to Shri A.J. Zaidi Bal Anand was born in 1943, in a village about 20 km south of Ludhiana, in a family of saint-scholars who practised Ayurveda. Graduated from DAV College, Jalandhar, and did Master in English Literature from Govt. College, Ludhiana. After a stint for a few years as lecturer, joined the Indian Foreign Service. Served in nine different countries and retired as India’s High commissioner to New Zealand. Now reading, reflecting and writing in nest in Delhi, on the East Bank of Yamuna. Bal Anand Having spent my childhood years in a village and later growing up in a town, both located in the closer vicinity of Malerkotla, the only princely state in the East Punjab ruled for centuries by the Muslim Nawabs, I had started wondering and pondering since long over the harmonies and divides between the Hindus and Muslims. The small state of Malerkotla had remained comparatively immune from the mindless violence during the Partition of the country. I have a vivid memory of an inscription, intact in 1951 but decimated soon after, of the name of Nawab Iftikhar Ali Khan on the front wall of the Gurudwara in Ahmedgarh for his donation of Rs. 500.00 – it must have been a princely sum in those days! I had instinctively developed a faith in the mutual accommodation among faiths long before I was destined to be an Indian diplomat in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Maldives! This is a prologue to my tribute to late Syed Ali Jawad Zaidi (1916-2004), who embodied for me the highest virtues of all the faiths of mankind. -
