Note: In 2012, the study was conducted using a telephone methodology that sampled a mix of landlines and cell phones. The study obtained 500 completed interviews. A follow-up online sample version was conducted a month later.     Norfolk’s Nauticus: USS Wisconsin BB‐64 The history of the U.S. Navy’s use of battleships is quite interesting. Some say the first battleship was the USS Monitor, used against the CSS Virginia (Monitor) in Hampton Roads in 1862. Others say it was the USS Michigan, commissioned in 1844. It was the first iron‐ hulled warship for the defense of Lake Erie. In any case, battleships, or as some have nicknamed them “Rolling Thunder,” have made the United States the ruler of the high seas for over one century. A history of those famous ships can be found in the source using the term bbhistory. By the way, BB‐64 stands for the category battleship and the number assigned. This photo program deals with the USS Wisconsin, which is moored in Norfolk and part of the Hampton Road Naval Museum and Nauticus. Though the ship has been decommissioned, it can be recalled into duty, if necessary. On July 6, 1939, the US Congress authorized the construction of the USS Wisconsin. It was built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Its keel was laid in 1941, launched in 1943 and commissioned on April 15, 1944. The USS Wisconsin displaces 52,000 tons at full load, length 880 fee, beam 108 feet and draft at 36 feet. The artillery includes 16‐inch guns that fire shells weighing one‐ton apiece. Other weapons include antiaircraft guns and later added on missile launchers. The ship can reach a speed of 30 nautical miles (knots) per hour or 34 miles mph. The USS Wisconsin’s first battle star came at Leyte Operation, Luzon attacks in the Pacific in December 1944.

    City Manager Weekly Update August 29, 2019 IT Department Wins 2019 Public Sector Government Innovation Award: Norfolk’s Department of Information Technology has won the coveted Public Sector Government Innovation Award for its implementation of the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Initiative to Modernize Business Processes. The award recognizes the success of the new ECM system, which uses Laserfiche, an electronic document management and workflow system, to streamline processes and drive innovation. During the past year, IT coordinated with 12 departments to develop 50 new automated workflows to significantly improve business processes. One immediate measure of success: Paper and storage costs have decreased citywide by about 13 percent, saving an average of about $8,300 a year because fewer records need to be stored offsite. Development Policy Team: The Development Policy Team met on August 28, 2019, to discuss development initiatives and foster collaboration among key stakeholders within the City. Dr. Larry “Chip” Filer was introduced as the new city manager, and Doug Smith provided an overview of his plans for continued collaboration as he moves to the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance. The Greater Norfolk Corporation, Downtown Norfolk Council, Economic Development Association, City Planning Commission and Norfolk Redevelopment Housing Authority are participating agencies on the DPT. The next meeting is scheduled for September 25, 2019. It will be hosted by the Greater Norfolk Corporation. ODU Innovation Center: Old Dominion University’s Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, at 112 Bank Street, was officially unveiled with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. today. The institute serves as a thought leader, convener and catalyst for innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

To me it means another cold winter season is history and that nice warm spring and summer days are just around the corner. In my book any day I can put the top down is a good day… On the ship it means that my fellow brass polishers and I will be able to work outside once again and put a shine on those things you just can’t work on in the winter when the wind whips off the Delaware and forces us below decks seeking a warmer place to do our thing. This past winter we’ve spent a lot of time in the lower levels of Turret 2 polishing all the brass in that area, and believe me it’s a target rich environment for brass polishing down there. I’m so happy the Turret 2 Experience will finally be opening to the public this coming weekend. This is something that has been two years in the making and on which a long list of volunteers and staff have worked many hours to give visitors the most realistic experience possible. The first tour of this area will start at 11:00 am this Sunday; tour groups will be limited to a maximum of 15 guests. The price for this new interactive tour is $29.95.
