For Immediate Release January 2016 PLAYHOUSE SQUARE January 12-17, 2016 Playhouse Square is proud to announce that the U.S. National Tour of ANNIE, now in its second smash year, will play January 12 - 17 at the Connor Palace in Cleveland. Directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin for the 19th time, this production of ANNIE is a brand new physical incarnation of the iconic Tony Award®-winning original. ANNIE has a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin. All three authors received 1977 Tony Awards® for their work. Choreography is by Liza Gennaro, who has incorporated selections from her father Peter Gennaro’s 1977 Tony Award®-winning choreography. The celebrated design team includes scenic design by Tony Award® winner Beowulf Boritt (Act One, The Scottsboro Boys, Rock of Ages), costume design by Costume Designer’s Guild Award winner Suzy Benzinger (Blue Jasmine, Movin’ Out, Miss Saigon), lighting design by Tony Award® winner Ken Billington (Chicago, Annie, White Christmas) and sound design by Tony Award® nominee Peter Hylenski (Rocky, Bullets Over Broadway, Motown). The lovable mutt “Sandy” is once again trained by Tony Award® Honoree William Berloni (Annie, A Christmas Story, Legally Blonde). Musical supervision and additional orchestrations are by Keith Levenson (Annie, She Loves Me, Dreamgirls). Casting is by Joy Dewing CSA, Joy Dewing Casting (Soul Doctor, Wonderland). The tour is produced by TROIKA Entertainment, LLC. The production features a 25 member company: in the title role of Annie is Heidi Gray, an 11- year-old actress from the Augusta, GA area, making her tour debut. -

Lesher Will Hear The People Sing Contra Costa Musical Theatre Closes 53rd Season with Epic Production WALNUT CREEK, February 15, 2014 — Contra Costa Musical Theatre (CCMT) will present the epic musical “Les Miserables“at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts, March 21 through April 20, 2014. Tickets for “Les Miserables” range from $45 to $54 (with discounts available for seniors, youth, and groups) and are on sale now at the Lesher Center for the Arts Ticket Office, 1601 Civic Drive in Walnut Creek, 925.943.SHOW (943-7469). Tickets can also be purchased online at www.lesherArtscenter.org. Based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo, “Les Miserables” has music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics by Alain Boublil, Jean-Marc Natel and Herbert Kretzmer and book by Schonberg, Boublil, Trevor Nunn and John Caird. The show premiered in London, where it has been running continuously since 1985, making it the longest-running musical ever in the West End. It opened on Broadway in 1987 and ran for 6,680 performances, closing in 2003, making it the fifth longest-running show on Broadway. A Broadway revival ran from 2008 through 2010. A film version of the musical opened in 2012 and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning three statues. “Les Miserables” won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Set in early 19th-century France, it follows the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. -

Williamson 2008 2 Abstract Contentious Comedy: Negotiating Issues of Form, Content, and Representation in American Sitcoms of the Post-Network Era This thesis explores the way in which the institutional changes that have occurred within the post-network era of American television have impacted on the situation comedy in terms of form, content, and representation. This thesis argues that as one of television’s most durable genres, the sitcom must be understood as a dynamic form that develops over time in response to changing social, cultural, and institutional circumstances. By providing detailed case studies of the sitcom output of competing broadcast, pay-cable, and niche networks, this research provides an examination of the form that takes into account both the historical context in which it is situated as well as the processes and practices that are unique to television. In addition to drawing on existing academic theory, the primary sources utilised within this thesis include journalistic articles, interviews, and critical reviews, as well as supplementary materials such as DVD commentaries and programme websites. This is presented in conjunction with a comprehensive analysis of the textual features of a number of individual programmes. By providing an examination of the various production and scheduling strategies that have been implemented within the post-network era, this research considers how differentiation has become key within the multichannel marketplace. -

Hairspray: a Glsen Discussion Giude for Educators and Students
HAIRSPRAY: A GLSEN DISCUSSION GIUDE FOR EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS It’s been nearly three decades since John Waters brought us his film, Hairspray, in 1988. From there, the story of Tracy Turnblad and her friends and family has lived on through the original film, the Broadway adaptation in 2002 and subsequent presence in school and community theater productions, the remake of the film in 2007 and NBC’s 2016 Hairspray LIVE. Set in racially-segregated 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray remains relevant to today’s audiences as it reflects many current events and issues in U.S. society and can be used to address a variety of themes, including, racism and bias of all kinds, body image, individuality and identity, student activism, community-police interactions and media bias. And, of course, it is a lot of fun. However you watch Hairspray—live, recorded, on stage or on screen—the story is full of potential inspiration, teachable moments and conversation starters for middle and high school educators and students, alike. Below you will find suggested discussion questions for use in your school. HOW TO USE HAIRSPRAY IN YOUR SCHOOL EDUCATORS AND COLLEAGUES: Consider discussing Hairspray at a staff meeting, PD session or professional learning community (PLC). Ask educators to watch Hairspray ahead of time or focus on a particular theme or song that you can watch/listen to together. Pick a topic or two that seem particularly relevant to your school community and use the educator questions below to guide the conversation. IN THE CLASSROOM: Bring Hairspray into the classroom through discussions and assignments aligned with your existing curriculum. -
Papillion-La Vista Community Theatre Audition Notice HAIRSPRAY
Papillion-La Vista Community Theatre Audition Notice HAIRSPRAY PLVCT’s production of HAIRSPRAY will be performed July 13-15 and 19-21, 2018 at the SumTur Amphitheater in Papillion. Auditions will be held at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church (7706 S. 96th St., La Vista) on Saturday, May 5th at 1:30 pm and Sunday, May 6th at 6:30 pm. Those auditioning need only attend one session. Saturday attendees will enter on the south side of the building, lower level. Sunday attendees may use the main entrance on the east side of the building. Staff will be available to guide people to the proper doors. Those auditioning should come prepared with 32 bars of music (about one minute) to sing. An accompanist will be provided. Please, no a cappella or recorded music. For this show, we will also allow singing from the score of HAIRSPRAY and the music will be available.* Cool and comfortable clothes and shoes are suggested for the dance audition.** Some auditioning may be asked for cold readings from the script or to sing from the score of HAIRSPRAY. College students who would like to be considered, but who will not be able to attend the live auditions, may arrange to submit video by contacting Jim McKain. High School students can typically use this event to fulfill required community service Civics hours. Music rehearsals will begin on May 22nd and 23rd. Staging/choreography rehearsals will begin Tuesday, May 29th. Our regular rehearsals will be Sunday afternoons and Monday-Thursday evenings at Papillion-La Vista High School (also Friday 7/6).
