On the final day of the temporary exhibition “Michael Landy. Out of Order” the Museum is inviting guests to a wide variety of attractions all about Jean Tinguely and Michael Landy in the Museum and in Solitude Park. In crowning conclusion, the EepyBirds will bring the day to a close with one of their spectacular Mentos & Coke Experiments. Since its opening in October 1996, Museum Tinguely has recorded more than 2.5 million visitors and put on more than eighty exhibitions. With an alternating focus, the permanent exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of Tinguely’s diverse creative activity. Temporary exhibitions take place alongside this, showcasing a broad spectrum of 20th and 21st-century artists and themes based on Tinguely’s “ideas universe”: Inspirations such as Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters, Tinguely’s contemporaries such as Arman, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Yves Klein, just as much as current themes, such as sensory perceptions in art, and contemporary artists. Museum Tinguely has established itself as an institution for interdisciplinary co-operations, among others in the fields of music, dance, and education, and, in collaboration with both local and international partners, offers art projects a platform that is open to an extensive public.     NH GALERIA Niki de Saint Phalle (Neuilly Sur Seine, France, 1930-2002) Niki de Saint Phalle es una de las artistas más prominentes de la Historia del Arte. De origen franco- ESCULTURAS Y GRABADOS americano, Saint Phalle fue una escultora, pintora y cineasta autodidacta, conocida sobre todo por sus esculturas de fibra de vidrio y mosaico o de poliéster pintado. En sus inicios, Saint Phalle realizaba pinturas al óleo de estilo naïve, así como collages muy coloridos con elementos visuales relacionados con la violencia, como pistolas y cuchillos. Este concepto se desar- rolla más adelante en sus conocidas Shooting Paintings, consistentes en lienzos cubiertos de una impri- 18 de enero a 8 de marzo de 2015 mación muy pastosa, a los que disparaba bolas de pintura que se estampaban en él con fuerza. Sus esculturas constituyen explosiones de color y componen un mundo fantástico marcado por las referencias a los mitos humanos, la astronomía, y la naturaleza. Sus imaginativas criaturas celebran la diversidad vital, con mujeres voluptuosas, planetas antropomorfos, estilizados monstruos, símbolos geo- métricos, calaveras humanas y variados animales. Saint Phalle encontró una fuente de inspiración en la obra de Gaudí, especialmente el Park Güell de Barcelona. Su relación con el también artista Jean Tinguely resultó en colaboraciones artísticas innovadoras. Sus figuras más paradigmáticas son las Nanas, voluptuosas figuras femeninas que actúan como arqueti- pos de representación de sus ideas sobre la mujer en la sociedad moderna, y que pueden verse en ciudades y museos de todo el mundo. For more information about the projects program at WPI, please see: http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Projects. i Abstract Empa and Museum Tinguely’s continuing collaboration inspired us to understand the aspects of Jean Tinguely’s art that stakeholders value, Empa’s anti-wear coating, and the impact the coating will have on stakeholders. We conducted interviews and surveys and discovered that Museum Tinguely is equipped to rectify misinformed restorations. Survey results confirmed that the coating would uphold the values we identified. Therefore, we recommended that Empa commit resources to adjust the anti-wear coating to work with Tinguely’s sculptures and that Museum Tinguely involve external stakeholders in risky restoration projects. We also recommended Museum Tinguely develop reference criteria for restoration and Empa improve the documentation procedure we developed for further research. ii Executive Summary Introduction Swiss artist Jean Tinguely constructed kinetic sculptures which onlookers found relatable for the human qualities they exhibited.

The show features 172 items, including sculptures, drawings, sketches and films, which admirably reflect the course followed by the artist and allow visitors to examine not only the evolution and quality of his creations but also the richness of his extensive oeuvre. The catalogue published to accompany the show contains illustrations of the works exhibited and includes essays on Tinguely and his work by the curators of the exhibition, Andres Pardey, deputy director of Museum Tinguely in Basel, and Klaus Littmann, director of Littmann Kulturprojekte. Jean Tinguely (Freiburg, 1925) spent his childhood and adolescence in Basel, where he trained as a decorator at the Arts and Crafts School during the Second World War. There he started doing abstract painting strongly influenced by Surrealism, the Bauhaus and, above all, the work of Kurt Schwitters. After the war he moved to Zurich, and in 1952 he and his first wife, Eva Aeppli, went to live in Paris. He soon made contact with the art world there, he met Brancusi and Yves Klein, and he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie Arnaud. During that period he made his first sound relief, exhibited in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1955.

    Press Release Basel, August 2011 Tinguely Day Marking the 20th anniversary of Jeannot’s death Basel, 28.8.2011 Jean Tinguely (1925-1991), one of the most innovative and important artists of the twentieth century, died twenty years ago on 30 August 1991 in Bern. As a member of the Paris avantgarde and founder member of the Nouveaux Réalistes he injected revolutionary new life into “static” art from the 1950s and 60s onwards. Even after his death he has held his place as one of the most important figures in the field of kinetic art. Since 1996 the Museum Tinguely has presented a representative survey of his work over four decades, which is constantly supplemented with temporary exhibitions on special themes. On 28 August 2011, in commemoration of this unique artist who died when he was only sixty-six years of age, the Museum Tinguely is collaborating with the insurance company Nationale Suisse on a Tinguely Day with various events and happenings taking place in the city of Basel. On the Tinguely Day, the people of Basel will be offered a special programme of events taking place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at various locations in the city. The Museum Tinguely is offering special guided tours and events related to the artist’s œuvre in which visitors will be able to participate. The Cathy Sharp Dance Ensemble will perform at Tinguely’s Fasnachtsbrunnen or Carnival Fountain, the inauguration of which in 1977 was likewise marked by a performance by the Basel Ballet. Information about this universally loved fountain and its background will be provided on location at the Theaterplatz.
