FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ARTIST CHANGE March 21, 2019 Contact: Deirdre Roddin (212) 875-5700; [email protected] YUJA WANG To Replace Maurizio Pollini In One-Night-Only Performance of SCHUMANN’s Piano Concerto Conducted by MUSIC DIRECTOR JAAP VAN ZWEDEN Program Also To Include J. WAGENAAR’s Cyrano de Bergerac Overture BEETHOVEN’s Symphony No. 7 March 27, 2019 Yuja Wang will replace Maurizio Pollini, who has cancelled in order to fully recover from a brief illness, in the one-night-only performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the New York Philharmonic led by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. The program will also include Johan Wagenaar’s Cyrano de Bergerac Overture and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. The performance will mark Yuja Wang’s 24th with the New York Philharmonic; she most recently appeared with the Orchestra and Jaap van Zweden in February–March 2018, both in New York and on tour to Asia. She will return next season for performances of Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Trumpet, and Strings, June 11–13, 2020, also conducted by Jaap van Zweden and featuring Principal Trumpet Christopher Martin. The Boston Globe wrote of her performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto last month with the Boston Symphony Orchestra: “Not just a vehicle for virtuosic fireworks, the concerto calls for a keen listening ear and attunement to the larger ensemble… Wang demonstrated all that in spades. Like an elite figure skater or gymnast, the athletic effort she expended was palpable, but if the physical feats took any toll, the audience never saw it.” Biographies Beijing-born pianist Yuja Wang is set to achieve new heights in critical superlatives and audience ovations during the 2018–19 season, through recitals, concert series, season residencies, and extensive tours with some of the world’s most venerated ensembles and conductors.

After 14 months away, it was wonderful last week to make our long-awaited return to our Barbican home, and to be able to reunite with audiences in person, sharing once again in the joy of live music. Sincere thanks to all of our supporters: your generosity has enabled us to continue sharing music with audiences across the globe through these challenging times, and now continues to assist our return to live performance and our recovery from the pandemic. With these concerts we welcome back LSO Conductor Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas, who has been sorely missed over the past year. Across four concerts at the Barbican and LSO St Luke’s, he conducts music by Grieg and Copland, piano concertos by Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich, and symphonies by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. It is a pleasure to be joined also by soloist Yuja Wang, who has performed with the Orchestra and Michael Tilson Thomas regularly over the years, most recently in 2017 when she joined the Orchestra on tour in Europe. Following these London performances of Rachmaninoff’s and Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concertos, we look forward to Yuja Wang – and Michael Tilson Thomas – joining us for further concerts at Snape Maltings next week. I hope you enjoy these performances. Our thanks to all of you, our audience members, for your support.

  • Perspectives: Yuja Wang
18|19 Perspectives: Yuja Wang Kirk Edwards An artist with breathtaking talent and charismatic stage presence, Grammy Award–nominated pianist Yuja Wang curates a five- concert Perspectives series during Carnegie Hall’s 2018–2019 season, demonstrating the singular blend of technical prowess, keen musical insight, and quicksilver versatility that has established her as one of the world’s finest performers. Ms. Wang’s series offers creative collaborations, reunions with recital partners and artists who have influenced her career, and a night of classical music comedy—all displaying the pianist’s eclectic interests and versatility. Ms. Wang kicks off her Perspectives series in October, performing with a quartet of percussionists headlined by Austrian star Martin Grubinger for a program to include the New York premieres of arrangements of Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion and Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps by Grubinger’s father (who is also performing on the program). She returns in February for two concerts, first reuniting with violinist and frequent recital partner Leonidas Kavakos following widespread acclaim for the duo’s exceptional musical chemistry. Ms. Wang returns the following week for a night of lighthearted musical comedy with virtuoso instrumentalists and jokesters Igudesman & Joo. In April, Ms. Wang joins another esteemed colleague, cellist Gautier Capuçon, for a recital of works by Franck and Rachmaninoff. Ms. Wang’s series concludes in May with a performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 5 with fellow Perspectives artist and mentor Michael Tilson Thomas and the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy. Born in Beijing, Yuja Wang was encouraged to pursue music at an early age, starting piano lessons at the age of six and studying at Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music.

The full list of winners is as follows: SERVICES TO MUSIC AWARD: MARIA CURCIO This award recognises lifetime achievement, and the awardee should be someone who has made an immeasurable contribution in the fields of piano recording, piano playing, piano repertoire, piano education and other areas of piano playing. Maria Curcio was a piano teacher whose influence spread far and wide. Until her death earlier this year at the age of 89, few people outside the piano world had heard of this tiny Italian woman who gave advice to an endless stream of pianists – among them many of today’s foremost international concert artists – from her basemenet flat in north London. But within the piano world her reputation was massive. Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, Mitsuko Uchida, Alfred Brendel, Alfredo Perl, Leon Fleisher, Anthony Goldstone, Pierre‐Laurent Aimard and Barry Douglas are just some of the pianists who benefited from her tutelage.
