SCREENING MOTHERS: Representations of motherhood in Australian films from 1900 to 1988 CAROLINE M. PASCOE B.A. (Honours) M.A. UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 1998 ii The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original, except as acknowledged in the text. The material has not been submitted, either in whole or in part, for a degree at this or any other university. CAROLINE MYRA PASCOE iii ABSTRACT Although the position of mothers has changed considerably since the beginning of the twentieth century, an idealised notion of motherhood persists. The cinema provides a source of information about attitudes towards mothering in Australian society which is not diminished by the fact that mothers are often marginal to the narrative. While the study recognises that cinematic images are not unconditionally authoritative, it rests on the belief that films have some capacity to reflect and influence society. The films are placed in an historical context with regard to social change in Australian society, so that the images can be understood within the context of the time of the making and viewing of the films. The depictions of the mother are scrutinised with regard to her appearance, her attitude, her relationship with others and the expectations, whether explicit or implicit, of her role. Of particular significance is what happens to her during the film and whether she is punished or rewarded for her behaviour. The conclusions reached after analysis are used to challenge those ideas which assume that portrayals of motherhood are unchangeable and timeless. -

Since World War II, Australia has developed strong industries in four key areas of popular culture: music, film, television and sport. Television and rock’n’roll music both arrived in 1956 and have had a strong influence on all groups within Australian society – this continues today. Sport has retained an important role in Australian life and has become closely tied to our sense of identity. The Australian film industry has also emerged to tell uniquely Australian stories that entertain and inform. While British, American and, more recently, European and Asian cultures have influenced us, Australia has developed its own distinct culture. In this creative dissertation, consisting of a series of essays and a full length play, I demonstrate an alternative view of aging women to combat the pejorative images now current. Drawing on dramatic portrayals from the past 100 years and current information on aging in the United States, I explore the dominant viewpoint on aging women. Combining the structures of spiritual quest and rite of passage with an appreciation for the ritual that celebrates such events, I have written a play, The Crones Among Us, from a female viewpoint. -

In the visual arts, theatre, popular and classical music, and especially in cinema and television, a distinct Australian voice could be heard that was accepted as culturally valid and nationally relevant. The renaissance of local production for cinema and television was reliant on the patronage of the state, first the Commonwealth government with the establishment of the Australian Film Development Corporation and the Experimental Film and Television Fund in 1970 and, later, the Australian Film and Television School. -

Introduction The Little Desert At a time when we are told that primary producers are facing many problems in satisfactorily disposing of their present level of production, it seems incredible that Sir William McDonald is intent on opening up yet more Crown Land . [The Little Desert is] known to be only marginal country—requiring . large capital expenditure and . highly expert farm management. No complete fauna study of the Little Desert has ever been made and it is more than likely that much knowledge is yet to be gained from the area. Gwynnyth Taylor, President of the Victorian National Parks Association, in a letter to the Age, 28 April 1969 In the Melbourne suburb of Greensborough, Valerie Honey read this letter and saw red. Sir William McDonald, the Victorian Minister for Lands, was proposing to put farms on the Little Desert, an isolated area of undeveloped country near her birthplace in Western Victoria. Honey had nostalgic memories of visiting the area near her uncle’s farm, where she sometimes spent school holidays: I didn’t know it was the Little Desert . we used to call it the ‘scrub’ and we went out there and I was crammed in the old truck cabin with some other farmers and my uncle . It was sunset and the sun was going with rays across this little salt lake, just one of the several salt lakes out there. -

‘” A Simple Epic”, Gallipoli and the Australian Media A brief survey by Harvey Broadbent Address delivered as annual Lone Pine Lecture at the Gallipoli Memorial Club, Sydney 8 August 2009 and Royal United Services Institute, NSW, 28 October 2009 As a Macquarie University Centre For Media History Presentation I feel very close to this subject as a person who has been actively involved in presenting the Gallipoli story as a media practitioner for over 25 years (as producer of 3 special event TV programs, 3 TV documentaries, two books, a wad of newspapers and journal articles, and a web-site). So it’s a subject that has fascinated me more and more, for as with the best analyses of history, it tells us something about identity or the search for it—if I may encroach on cliché--what it is to be Australian. For this presentation I need to define my use of the word ‘media’. My definition is: the various modes of communicating information and p.o.v.s regarding that information and ideas relating to that information. So that includes newspapers and in the same category the later developments of radio and TV news and current affairs broadcasting and more recently narrowcasting (on the worldwide web for e.g.), and, continuing, cinema, TV documentaries, theatre, and last but by no means least-books. In Australia, the manner and the nature of the Gallipoli saga as it has been presented over 90 years in these various media arms is, I believe as do other commentators, deserving of study in its own right.
