3 KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS AND MOUSE The .mouse and keyboard are your PC’s eyes and ears, without them you could not execute commands or input text. ❖ Introduction to Keyboard • A computer keyboard is an input device used to enter characters and functions into the computer system by pressing buttons, or keys. It is the primary device used to enter text. • A keyboard typically contains keys for individual letters, numbers and special characters, as well as keys for specific functions. A standard keyboard has 104 keys. ❖ Keyboard Shortcuts • Shortcut keys provide an easier and usually quicker method of navigating and executing commands in computer software programs. • These are the keyboard shortcuts to help you use your computer easily. This allows the user to select items stored on a computer and, subsequently, perform actions on those items. • There are different types of mouse, such as, wireless, optical, trackball, mechanical. • The standard mouse has two buttons and a scroll wheel in the middle. Left Mouse Button →The left mouse button is the main mouse button, and is used for common tasks such as selecting objects, opening or closing windows by clicking, double-clicking or dragging actions. Right mouse button→ The right mouse button is often used to open contextual menus, which are pop-up menus that change depending where you click. Scroll wheel→ The mouse scroll wheel is located at the middle of the left and right buttons of the mouse. It is commonly used for easy scrolling up and down through a document or page. Double click→ To release the left mouse button after pressing it twice quickly is called double click. A double click opens the selected item. Right click →To release the right button after pressing it once, is called right-click. It displays a list of properties of the selected item. Scrolling→ Place your index finger on the scrolling wheel, roll the wheel forward and backward. It helps moving the pages up and down. Drag and Drop→ Drag and drop means to select an item and move it to another location on the computer. This is how to drag and drop an item:- Step 1: Place the pointer over an item on the screen. Step 2: Press and hold down the left mouse button. Step 3: Now move the pointer to the place where you want to place the item (drag). MS-Word Microsoft word is an application used to create, edit and format documents. It consists of various tools to create, open, save, print, edit and format the document in quick and easy manner. In short, Microsoft Word is written as MS-Word. ➢ Starting MS-Word To start MS-Word, Start>>All programs>>Microsoft office>>Microsoft office word2007 ❖ Creating a new document 1. Click on Office button->new. 2. New document dialog box will appear. 3. Select the blank document. 4. Select create. Or Shortcut key to create a new document is- Ctrl+N. ❖ Saving a document 1. Click on Office button->Save. 2. Save as dialog box will appear. 3. Locate the folder in which you wish to save your file. 4. Type the file name in file name box. 5. Click on save button. Or Shortcut key to save a file is Ctrl+S. ❖ Opening a document 1. Click the office button->Open. 2. Open dialog box will appear. 3. Locate the folder in which you had saved the file. 4. Select the file. 5. Click on open. Or Shortcut key to open a document is Ctrl+O. ❖ Closing a document 1. Click on the Office button->Close. If current file is not saved, a message box will appear, asking you to save the file. 2. Click on Yes to save the file. Click on No to close the document without saving. Or Shortcut key to close a document is Ctrl+W. ❖ Printing a document 1. Click on Office button->Print. 2. Print dialog box will appear. 3. Make selections such as number of copies, pages to be printed in their respective areas. 4. Click on OK to confirm the selections made and print the document. Or Shortcut key to print a document is Ctrl+P. ➢ Editing a text Editing is a process of inserting or deleting or copying or moving or searching and replacing a block of text in an existing document. ❖ Moving a text Moving a text means to shift the selected text from one location to other location in the same document. To apply moving, perform following steps- 1. Select the text you want to move. 2. Click on Cut button in the clipboard group in home tab. 3. Position cursor to the location where the text is to be moved. Or Shortcut key to cut a document is Press Ctrl+X. 4. Click on paste button in the clipboard group in home tab. Or Shortcut key to paste a document is Press Ctrl+V. ❖ Copying a text Copying means to prepare a duplicate copy of the selected text and displayed it at some other location in the same document or in some other document. To apply moving, perform following steps- 1. Select the text that you want to copy. 2. Click on Copy button in the Clipboard group in Home tab. Or Shortcut key to copy a document is Press Ctrl+C. 3. Position cursor to the location where the text is to be copied. 4. Click on paste button in the clipboard group in Home tab. Or Shortcut key to paste a document is Press Ctrl+V. ❖ Deleting a document Deleting a text means to remove or erase the text. For this, select the text and press delete key. Selected text will be deleted. ❖ Undo and Redo Word remembers all the changes that you apply in a document. If you make a change by mistake, it allows you to cancel that change. This facility is known as Undo. If some Undo is applied by mistake, it allows to reverse the action through a facility Redo. 1. Select the text and erase. 2. Click on Undo or redo action.
