In World War II, famous poems were used to encrypt messages (that is to put messages in a code so if they were intercepted by an enemy, the enemy couldn’t easily read the message). This was, however, found to be insecure because enemies quickly cracked this code and learned which famous poems were being used to encrypt the messages. In 1943, the Head of the English codes office, Leo Marks, wrote his own poem ‘The Life That I Have’ about his girlfriend. This was used by a female British Agent, Violette Szabo, to encrypt messages to send back to England as she was working in France during the War. This method of using poems written by normal people was then used more, as the enemy would not know the poem and therefore not be able to decipher the message. This was a hard method of encrypting messages as it was quite time-consuming but more importantly, the soldiers and agents had to memorise the poems as they wouldn’t be allowed to carry a copy around with them. Imagine having to learn a whole poem off by heart! There are instructions over the page to help you create your own coded message! You could write a poem about anything you want to - the world war, lockdown, your favourite hobby, your favourite sports team, a make believe animal, your dream three course meal - let your imagination go wild! Perhaps you could ask a family member or friend to do the same and you could swap messages! Wildlife Poem (written by Dylan Kristiansen, aged 9) Wildlife beautiful with lush green leaves Incredible bugs of different sizes underground and in the sky Loveable pandas hairy and squidgy eating bamboo Dreadful pollution in the water, animals getting trapped Leopards, jaguars and tigers look so alike, maybe cousins In the jungle the predator pounces at its prey Fresh air everywhere coming from the trees Exciting views on top of Everest, biggest of all Pick 5 or 6 words from your poem and the number of where the words appear in the poem (try to include every letter of the alphabet). We chose: beautiful (2nd word) - underground (12th) - hairy (19th) - animals (30th) - th th pounces (47 ) - exciting (58 ) Write out your words in order and assign a number to all the letters alphabetically (there will probably be more than one of some letters, these still get different numbers though). Here’s how we did it: (So, 1 = a, 2 = a, 3 = a, 4 = a, 5 = b, 6 = c etc.) b e a u t i f u l u n d e r g r o u n d h a i r y 5 10 1 41 39 18 14 42 23 43 26 8 11 34 15 35 31 44 27 9 17 2 19 36 47 a n i m a l s p o u n c e s e x c i t i n g 3 28 20 25 4 24 37 33 32 45 29 6 12 38 13 46 7 21 40 22 30 16 Dear best bud, How are you and your little brother and sister? I am doing well by doing piano everyday and a mixture of school work as well as playing with my little brother. I can’t wait to see you again and get back to school. Stay safe! Using your code, rewrite your message and don’t forget to let them know the code words too. Here is ours: Code words: 2 - 12 - 19 - 30 - 47 - 58 Message: 8, 10, 1, 34 - 5, 11, 37, 39 - 5, 41, 9. 17, 32, W - 3, 36, 12 - 47, 32, 45 - 4, 29, 9, 47, 31, 44, 36 - 5, 36, 31, 39, 17, 13, 35 - 2, 26, 8 - 37, 21, 38, 40, 10, 35? 22 - 2, 25 - 9, 32, 20, 26, 16 - 33, 22, 3, 26, 32 - 13, V, 12, 36, 47, 8, 4, 47 - 4, 26, 9 - 1 - 25, 18, 46, 39, 43, 36, 12 - 32, 14 - 28, 6, 17, 31, 32, 24 - W, 31, 34, K - 1, 38, W, 10, 24, 23 - 2, 37 - 33, 23, 4, 47, 19, 30, 16 - W, 18, 39, 17 - 25, 47 - 23, 22, 40, 39, 24, 13 - 5, 36, 32, 40, 17, 11, 34. 18 - c, 4, 29, 40 - W, 3, 22, 39 - 40, 32 - 37, 10, 13 - 47, 32, 44 - 2, 16, 4, 21, 29 - 2, 26, 8 - 15, 13, 40 - 5, 3, 6, K - 40, 32 - 37, 7, 17, 32, 31, 23. 27, 39, 4, 47 - 38, 1, 14, 11! (can you spot our mistake? We missed out two letters from our code words so we can’t encode W or K!) Send your coded message to someone special and don’t forget to send them the poem too, so they can decipher it! Put your new encryption skills to good use using the poem and encrypted message below. Story in the Clouds (written by Dylan’s mum, aged 33) When I look up in the bright blue sky and at the fluffy white clouds, I see all the different shapes and start to think aloud. Is that a dog running from a scary dinosaur, or is it a baby saying hello to a lion with a great big roar. Is it a rocket soaring to the moon, and beside that a bowl of cereal with a spoon. There's a fish swimming by a turtle, and beneath them are Pikachu and Squirtle. I see a whole family of squirrels and just beside them, Harry Potter fighting with Professor Quirrell. There's a bunch of grapes and a banana, or could it be sisters Elsa and Ana. I see people, they could be soldiers at war, and their families waiting at home by the door. I see comradery, bravery and sorrow, they all did this for a safer and better tomorrow. I'm so lucky to be peacefully staring up at the sky of blue, to all the many who fought and made sacrifices, thank you.
