In this eight-part series, fully licensed clips from Hollywood movies are used to help Catholic school religion teachers, parish catechists, and youth ministers involve their students in reflection and discussion about faith and its implications for prayer, belief, and behavior. NOTE: Adults can find this series helpful for their programs as well. At the core of the program are clips from popular movies that exemplify key traits and issues that are part of a person’s life-long journey of faith. The clips provide viewers with situations that relate to real-life experiences and draw them into a natural engagement with the subject. A person’s faith journey is a sacred and profound thing, but there is no reason why one cannot have fun along the way. Jesus enjoyed himself at a wedding and certainly must have chuckled at his conversation with Zachaeus, the little guy in the tree. It’s possible – necessary, even – to enjoy the process detailed in this program while still being true to the sacred task of faith formation. HOW TO USE THIS SERIES: The teacher/catechist/youth minister should download and consult the companion booklet for this program: How to Use This Series. Designed to help a leader make the best use of the lesson plans, this booklet contains significant supplementary material to support an understanding of issues such as “Catholic Social Teaching” or “Media Mindfulness.” In addition, it provides short descriptions of some pedagogical tools employed in the lessons. There is also a helpful bibliography of resources. IN SHORT: This series is divided into eight Episodes (one Episode per DVD). Each DVD features three traits/issues. Four short film clips address each of these traits/issues. Each DVD/Episode contains twelve clips and lessons. Each lesson provides information about the film and the clip itself. Also included are a variety of discussion questions, Scripture references, and reflection, prayer, and faith-in-action activities. Each lesson can stand alone or work in conjunction with others. It can also be used as a supplement to lessons contained in (arch)diocesan-approved textbook series. PLEASE NOTE: It is against the law to copy these DVD episodes, in whole or in part. None of the movies represented in this Episode is rated higher than PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America. No inappropriate material is included in any of the film clips. Scripture texts in this work are taken from the New American Bible with Revised New Testament and Revised Psalms © 1991, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Washington, D.C. and are used by permission of the copyright owner. All Rights Reserved. No part of the New American Bible may be reproduced in any form without permission in writing from the copyright owner. Options for audio and subtitles in English or Spanish are available in “Settings” on the main menu of the DVD. Spanish subtitles are available for all film clips. Spanish audio is available for most, but not all film clips. Film Clips for Catholic Youth Faith Formation is available via DVD’s, Internet Streaming, and School Site Servers. SYNOPSIS: A former basketball star is asked to coach a team where the players do not believe they need to be disciplined students. As the story focuses on the backgrounds and struggles of each of the players, we see the powerful influence one person can have on the lives of others if that person can help them face their fears and move forward. FILM STATS: This is a film from Paramount Pictures and MTV Films; Directed by Thomas Carter; Written by Mark Schwahn and John Gatins; Produced by David Gale, Brian Robbins, and Michael Tolin; Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Rob Brown, Robert Richard, Rick Gonzalez, Nana Gbewonyo, Antwon Tanner, and Channing Tatum. VIEW THE CLIP: The film clip can be viewed once at the beginning of the lesson and several more times after the initial viewing, depending on need. Journaling or just taking random notes before starting the discussion may help some students to collect their thoughts. The teacher/catechist can determine the best way to use the clip so that it will serve both the needs of the students and the point of the lesson. GETTING STARTED: (Can use some or all questions) What’s going on in this scene? OR What do you see/hear happening in this scene? OR With which character (if any) do you identify? Why? NEXT: How do you see yourself now? How about ten years from now? How will you be living? What will you be doing? GOING DEEPER: Name the people who have most influenced your life? What did they do? Why did you choose these people? MAKING CHOICES! (All Students) Write a list of twenty words that will describe you in twenty years. Then, in a parallel column, write why you chose each word. What did this exercise teach you about yourself? HOW CAN THESE SCRIPTURE PASSAGES HELP US? “And now, Lord, what future do I have? You are my only hope.” (Psalm 39:8) “For you will surely have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.” (Proverbs 23:18) “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38) “For, while physical training is of limited value, devotion is valuable in every respect, since it holds promise of life both for the present and for the future.” (I Timothy 4:8) HOW CAN JESUS HELP US? (Younger students might like to act out this selection before the discussion.) (Matthew 5:14-16) Read this selection and decide what Jesus asks of us when he calls us “the light of the world.” THINGS TO DO AT HOME!!! (Some or all of these can be adapted or converted into in-class activities.) 1. NOTABLE QUOTABLES ACTIVITY Write a journal entry or have a discussion with family or friends, reflecting on one or more of the following quotations, and be ready to report back next time. Coach Carter (to team): "You have to have a vision. Tell me, how do you see yourselves?” Coach Carter “Nobody gets to live life backward. Look ahead, that is where your future is.” Ann Landers, 20th Century American; advice columnist “Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in yourself. That is why some people with mediocre talent, but with great inner drive, go so much further than people with vastly superior talent.” Sophia Loren, contemporary Italian; actress “We can’t cross that bridge until we come to it, but I always like to lay down a pontoon ahead of time.” Bernard Baruch, 19th-20th Century American; financier, stock-market speculator, statesman, political consultant, economic advisor to Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt “When I have fully decided that a result is worth getting, I go ahead of it and make trial after trial until it comes.” Thomas Alva Edison, 19th-20th Century American, dubbed “The Wizard of Menlo Park”; businessman, scientist and inventor of the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the long-lasting electrical light-bulb 2. PRAYER ACTIVITY (All Students) Write down one of your shortcomings and one of your skills, talents or blessings. Ask God to help you overcome or diminish your shortcoming (or, if it’s not something that can be changed, e.g., not enough height to play basketball, then ask for the grace to accept it). Also, thank God for your skill, talent or blessing and ask for the grace to be humble about it. 3. MEDIA MINDFULNESS ACTIVITY (All Students) Spend a week or so watching all kinds of commentary and interview shows (sports, politics, entertainment) on TV. How much hope for the future is displayed in the conversations and interviews you watch? This will be part of a class discussion soon. 4. FAITH-IN-ACTION ACTIVITY (All Students) Do some research about one or both of these leaders: Cesar Chavez, Dr.

  • Buddy Films and Gender Identity: Representing the Bonds of Masculinity
J^P^'-'J \^^.rf Buddy Films and Gender Identity: Representing the Bonds of Masculinity Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Program in Popular Culture Brock University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Masters of Arts in Popular Culture Jodi Mason June 2004. ©Jodi Mason 2004. JAMES A GlBSOti LIBRARY HROCKUmVERSITY ST. G\THARINES ON Abstract The study examines the buddy film genre and the representation of masculinity in relation to the homosocial and the homoerotic. As a genre, the buddy films focus on male relationships, thematically seeking to mediate the boundaries surounding the homosocial continuum and the intimacy and eroticism implicit in male bonding. Theories of genre, gender and identity are used to analyze the construction of masculine identity within the films. By providing a qualitative analysis of films from the 1 960s to contemporary times, the research establishes a relationship between social changes, attitudes toward men and depictions of men. The buddy films adapt to address changes in the representation of masculinity, embodied in the difference between the male couple in the films. The early films of the 1960s served as templates that deconstructed traditional representations of male identity through articulating the tension within homosocial relationships. However, in the later films this tension became a reflexive convention, acting to undermine the eroticism onto a displaced Other. The buddy film genre highlights the tension inherent to the male masquerade. This tension is situated in the need to represent the protagonist's homosocial relationship, while disavowing the eroticism that surrounds homosocial bonding. The structure of the buddy film genre, which focuses on the exploration of masculinity and representing the bonds of homosocial intimacy, makes these films a significant site for investigating the cultural construction of masculine identities.

Fox Television Network In 1985 Rupert Murdoch, after acquiring the Twentieth Century Fox studio for a total of $575 million through his holding company, News Corporation (NewsCorp), decided to start a fourth broadcast network on the advice of Barry Diller, the highly sought-after ex- ecutive recently recruited to Fox from industry leader Paramount Studios. NewsCorp purchased Metromedia from media mogul John Kluge, gaining control of seven key in- dependent TV stations in several large East Coast cities and Los Angeles. Fox quickly lined up 88 additional independent stations to become its network affiliates and launched the Fox Television Network in 1986. Initially the network reached only 60% of the coun- try and aired original network programming only one night a week, on Sunday. Everyone in the industry thought Diller and Murdoch crazy. At the time the big three networks had a combined television viewing share of 93%. To attract viewers away from them, Fox chose to go after two key demographics: youth, a group coveted by advertis- ers, and African-Americans. As Diller said, “We had to air shows that demanded your attention, that yanked you by the throat to get you to change the channel.”1 Peter Chernin, a loyal executive who would eventually become Murdoch’s second in command, concurred: “We’re in the attention-getting business.

  • OLD CHUNK of COAL for Periodico Magazine
30 OLD CHUNK OF COAL 31 BY ANNA-SOPHIE BERGER I was late to know about Norm Macdonald. A friend sent me a link to the video of his infa- mous “Moth Joke” on Conan just about right before moth memes hit my feed. Norm slowly unfolds the plight of a moth confiding its existential dread to a podiatrist. The characters in the joke are given proverbially Russian names as if parodying a Dostoyevsky novel. I enjoy likening this unhappy protagonist to the uncannily large moth specimen that provoked and prominently features in the moth memes as it desperately flutters against a window trying to get to the light. “Honestly Doc, I don’t even know what I am doing anymore.” Norm didn’t invent that joke. A quasi-universal tale is rendered absurd by a final punch line—both standard elements of classic comedy. The basic structure allows for the joke to unfold through individual performance and personalisation of the story’s details. Its origi- nality resides within this oral tradition rather than in topicality of content: Norm chuckles and snickers when he almost can’t hold himself together, and he perfectly spaces his pauses, visibly savouring them as a device for a suspense that is ultimately meaningless. I struggle with my own rage. Not that I feel prone to aggression, but let’s say there is plenty to be enraged about. Just as the premises for cultural production are increasingly pressured by the conditions of civility, art yields to fantasies of a moral high ground. But rage is a complicated proxy even if disinterested creation is not what one desires.
