• Report on Beetles (Coleoptera) Collected from the Dartington Hall Estate, 2013 by Dr Martin Luff
Report on beetles (Coleoptera) collected from the Dartington Hall Estate, 2013 by Dr Martin Luff. 1. Introduction This year has been a particularly busy one for my work on the beetles of the Estate. I recorded numbers of species on 11 separate dates from April (at the end of the cold spring) through to mid- November. The generally warm and dry summer enabled me to record much more by sweeping herbaceous vegetation around field margins, especially in Hill Park. At the end of May I was assisted by an old friend of mine, and former fellow student, Dr Colin Welch (RCW), who is an authority on the Staphylinidae (rove beetles). I was also provided with the contents of the nest boxes from Dartington Hills in February and September, thanks to Will Wallis and Mike Newby. Finally Mary Bartlett again encouraged me to examine the fauna of her compost heap in November. 2. Results A total of 201 beetle species from 35 families were recorded. This is considerably more than in any previous year that I have collected at Dartington. Of these, 85 species were not recorded in my earlier lists (Luff, 2010-12). The overall number of species that I have recorded from the Estate is now 369, which is almost 10% of the entire British beetle fauna. The bird nest boxes yielded 13 species, with over half being new to the Estate, despite having examined the boxes in previous years; the contents of the boxes were also rather different between spring and autumn, with only four species common to both.

Crisicum 4. pp.431. _______________________________________________________________________________ A Dél-Tiszántúl annotált állattani bibliográfiájának alapvetése Kalivoda Béla Abstrackt Establishing the basis of the Annotated Zoological Bibliography of the South-Tiszántúl: The goal of this work was to initiate to collect the publications of the zoological data of the South- Tiszántúl (South-East Hungary, see on the maplet) namely the activity area of the Körös-Maros National Park Directorate. During the assembly of the bibliography my principal was the collection of zoological data. So the work contains publications of more or less accurate occurrence data. For the better usages sake the bibliography is annotated. Its items are provided with a code composed from the name of author(s), year of publishing and, if it is necessary, an additional letter code. Annotations contains these codes providing possibility of query by animal species, taxon and location of data.

The study focused on the invertebrates of the habitats covered by the Habitats Directive (92/43/ EEC). The species list we present here contains 465 species in total, among them some remarkable species as Cyphon kongs- bergensis, Crenitis punctatostriata, Deliphrum algidum, Hydroporus melanarius, Hydrosmecta carinthiaca, Ochthephilus aureus and Pselaphaulax dresdensis. Activity denstities of some bog species differ most notably in bog habitats: Cyphon kongsbergensis, Enochrus affinis, Crenitis punctatostriata, Pterostichus diligens and Pterostichus rhaeticus showed high densities in active raised bog and transition mires, but absence or low densities in degraded raised bog.

  • Systematic Catalog of Japanese Chrysomelidae12
Pacific Insects 3 (1) : 117-202 April 20, 1961 SYSTEMATIC CATALOG OF JAPANESE CHRYSOMELIDAE12 (Coleoptera) By Michio Chujo3 and Shinsaku Kimoto4 INTRODUCTION The Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles) is one of the largest groups of Coleoptera. About 30,000 species of this family have been described from the world. All of them are phy tophagous and some of them are serious injurious insects. Taxonomic studies of this group are important in connection with agricultural and forest entomology. In spite of the need, a complete catalog of Japanese Chrysomelidae has not yet been published. Since 1956, we have worked on a systematic catalog of Japanese Chrysomelidae. Kimoto spent from September to November 1959 working on type specimens of Far Eastern Chrysomelidae in continental United States and Europe as Bishop Museum Fellow in Ento mology, after his one and a half years stay in Hawaii, working on Chinese Chrysomelidae. A revisional paper on type specimens in United States and European Museums, is planned by Kimoto. The scope of this paper is Japan, the Ryukyu Is., and small neighboring islands. In regard to applied entomology, food plants are also listed. Many of the new combinations or status or synonymies are based on Kimoto's studies of type specimens. After Hornstedt, 1788, studies on Japanese Chrysomelidae have been made by various workers. In the latter half of the 19th century, studies on Japanese fauna were made by Motschulsky, Harold, Kraatz, Baly, Jacoby, Boheman, Weise and other workers, especially Baly and Jacoby. Those works were chiefly descriptions of new genera and species. Most of the Japanese species were described during this period.

  • Review of Evidence Concerning Ragwort Impacts, Ecology and Control Options
Review of evidence concerning ragwort impacts, ecology and control options Report to Defra OCTOBER 2013 Authors: Ruth Laybourn, Debbie Kessell, Naomi Jones, Simon Conyers, Caroline Hallam, Nigel Boatman Food and Environment Research Agency Sand Hutton, York, YO41 1LZ 1 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Introduction Ragwort is a widespread native plant in the UK, which occurs in a range of habitats including those used for grazing livestock and hay or silage production, and is of concern because it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) which are toxic to livestock. Problems have occurred particularly with poisoning of horses. Ragwort is a specified weed in the Weeds Act 1959, under which land owners can be required to take all reasonable steps to prevent spread on their land and onto adjoining land. Defra have issued a Code of Practice on How to Prevent the Spread of Ragwort, which was published in 2004 (revised 2007) (Defra, 2007). In order to ensure that guidance continues to be based on the latest and best evidence, the work reported here was commissioned by Defra with the following objectives: o Review and update the evidence base on the impacts of ragwort on livestock, methods of control and the cost, benefits and impacts of control; o Investigate experience of ragwort problems, policy and control in other countries o Make suggestions relating to the Code of Practice and further research needs. Biology and ecology Studies of Ragwort ecology and distribution have shown that: Ragwort is found in a wide range of habitats but requires bare ground or disturbance to establish. Ragwort plants form a rosette in their first year and typically flower, set seed and die in the second year, though in some situations they can be longer lived.
