In de eerste verhalen wordt Tobin onderbroken in zijn zelf opgelegde taak om een hoge muur om zijn huis te bouwen en de rol als niet-officiële privé-detective de wereld van een of andere gehate groep bandieten binnen te dringen die hun eigen muren hebben opgebouwd die hem aan zijn eigen muur doen denken. Naarmate hij door de werelden van de professionele misdadigers komt, komt hij langzaam tot de ontdekking dat hij niet enige is in zijn geïsoleerde positie en schuld en begint zichzelf te aanvaarden en terug te keren in de echte wereld. Non lo è nemmeno poter vantare una bibliografia che supera nettamente i 100 romanzi e una innumerevole quantità di racconti, sceneggiature, adattamenti cinematografici, firmati con almeno dieci diversi pseudonimi nel corso di una produzione letteraria che ha spaziato fra i generi più svariati come il mistery, il noir, il western, la fantascienza, la satira di costume e la fantapolitica. Tutto questo (e tantissime altre cose) è stato Donald E. Westlake, classe 1933, scomparso il 31 dicembre 2008 a causa di un attacco cardiaco che lo ha stroncato mentre si recava al cenone di capodanno insieme ai suoi amici. Quell'infarto ci ha privati di uno splendido settantacinquenne che, dopo mezzo secolo di onorata carriera letteraria, non aveva mai manifestato alcuna intenzione di voler interrompere la sua eclettica, monumentale attività artistica che pure ha registrato nel tempo numerosi cambiamenti di rotta e di tono.
