Dortmunder steals the same jewel not just once--not just twice--but again--and again--and again .. Dortmunder didn't want to swipe this stone. He didn't want to know from the Balabomo Emerald. But when one of to competing African countries--the nation of Talabwofinances the scheme, Dortmunder can be persuaded. Talabwo has purchased a fiasco. As Dortmunder's gang strikes by car, helicopter, and train, one heist after another goes wrong. The gem keeps slipping away, inflicting on Dortmunder what is fast becoming the worst punishment of all--an emerald with a sense of humor. ISBN 13: 9780671205416. Near Fine book in Near Fine jacket. Basis of the 1972 with Robert Redford and a crew including George Segal, Zero Mostel and others. Scarce first edition, nice example. See scans. L17n. "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Donald E. Westlake (1933-2008) wrote over a hundred novels under his own name and pseudonyms. Many of his books have been made into movies, including The Hunter, which was filmed as Point Blank; the 1999 smash hit Payback; and the 2013 movie Parker. The winner of the three Edgar Awards, he was named a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, the highest honor bestowed by the society, in 1993. “Westlake’s novel comes awesomely close to the ultimate in comic, big-caper novels; it’s so filled with action and imagination.” — The New York Times Book Review “Westlake is a master hand at the running gag this Westlake brought on such a case of the laughing bends that I required decompression.” — The Washington Post “[Westlake’s] most durable character. Whatever can go wrong in the man’s elaborate attempts at larceny invariably does, and in the most amusing and unexpected ways possible.” — Los Angeles Times. The Hot Rock by Donald E. Westlake. John Dortmunder leaves jail with ten dollars, a train ticket, and nothing to make money on but his good name. Thankfully, his reputation goes far. No one plans a caper better than Dortmunder. His friend Kelp picks him up in a stolen Cadillac and drives him away from Sing-Sing, telling a story of a $500,000 emerald that they just have to steal. Dortmunder doesn’t hesitate to agree. The emerald is the crown jewel of a former British colony, lately granted independence and split into two nations: one for the Talabwo people, one for the Akinzi. The Akinzi have the stone, the Talabwo want it back, and their UN representative offers a fine payday to the men who can get it. It’s not a simple heist, but after a few years in stir, Dortmunder could use the challenge. “Westlake’s novel comes awesomely close to the ultimate in comic, big-caper novels; it’s so filled with… action and imagination.” —The New York Times Book Review. “Westlake is a master hand at the running gag… this Westlake brought on such a case of the laughing bends that I required decompression.” — The Washington Post. “[Westlake’s] most durable character…. Whatever can go wrong in the man’s elaborate attempts at larceny invariably does, and in the most amusing and unexpected ways possible.” —Los Angeles Times. Buy this book from one of the following online retailers: The Hot Rock is a 1972 comedy-drama caper film directed by Peter Yates from a screenplay by William Goldman, based on Donald E. Westlake's novel of the same name, which introduced his long-running John Dortmunder character. The film stars Robert Redford, George Segal, Ron Leibman, Paul Sand, Moses Gunn and Zero Mostel. The Hot Rock by Donald E. Westlake. Reviewed by Allen Hott. A story that moves, moves, and moves. Basically The Hot Rock is about a very expensive Balabama emerald that belonged to one country in Africa but since the country divided into two halves both sides want possession of this jewel. As the story begins one side (Talabwo) with their ambassador, Major Iko, is trying to get the emerald out of its display position which is in New York City. Dortmunder is led into working to get the emerald by Kelp, his normal right hand man. Kelp and Dortmunder meet with Iko and arrive at a financial agreement for the event to happen. It will take five men at thirty thousand dollars per man for Dortmunder’s crew to pull off the job. But that is only part of it though as Iko and Dortmunder then battle over expense money per man per week. All of these happenings go along to make this story not only funny but definitely readable to the end. After Dortmunder and Kelp leave they begin rounding up the balance of the crew and beginning to make some plans for when, where, and how not only will they live but also how they will pull off the money making deal. Little do they realize however that at the same time another group of thieves have also looked into the value of the stone and already made the necessary arrangements and stolen it from the display? However the guy who actually stole the gem was later caught and put in jail and he supposedly has the gem with him (likely swallowed it prior to capture). So that means Dortmunder and his gang will have to break Greenwood (the one with the stone) out of jail. In true Westlake fashion Dortmunder and his gang do in fact break Greenwood out of prison. But then when they get to talk to him they find that he doesn’t have the gem now. Because when he was arrested he decided to hide the gem at the police station. This is how this book moves from one place to another as the gem is constantly on the move and the Dortmunder crew never stops hunting it but always it appears to be a step ahead of them. They are earning money from Major Iko but they can’t get him what he wants so they don’t earn the big bucks that they want. What they do get from the Major always seems to be another major tool of some type (a truck, a helicopter, and other tools) to help the gang break into and then out of the newest location of the stone. Overall the book is a very funny read as Westlake writes well and the conversations that go back and forth between the characters are more than enough to keep the reader’s attention. There have been several Dortmunder books over the years and they all created quite a variety of stories that were well received. The Hot Rock is one of those! • George Segal's Abraham and Isaac
1 Personas: George Segal’s Abraham and Isaac Scenes from the Collection The Jewish Museum July 19, 2019-October 31, 2020 Exhibition Wall Texts and Checklist George Segal’s Abraham and Isaac On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard was called to the Kent State University campus. This was in response to several days of mass student protest against the escalation of the Vietnam War. In the ensuing confrontation, the Guard opened fire on the students, killing four and wounding nine. The official government investigation concluded the shootings were unjustified. This use of military force against civilians resonated throughout the mass media and led to demonstrations across the country. The sculptor George Segal was commissioned in 1978 to create a memorial for this event. He turned to an episode from the Hebrew Bible in which God commands Abraham to sacrifice his only son as a demonstration of his faith and obedience. Segal chose his fellow artist Lucas Samaras as the model for Abraham and Alexander Tsiaras, a student, for the kneeling Isaac. Segal’s allegory poetically reflects on the idea of generational struggle. These biblical personas, according to the artist, “call on older people who have the power of life and death over their children to exercise love, compassion, and restraint.” George Segal (American, 1924–2000) Abraham and Isaac (in Memory of May 4, 1970, Kent State University), 1978 Plaster, cloth, rope, metal, and acrylic paint, 84 x 120 x 50 in. (213.4 x 304.8 x 127 cm) The Jewish Museum, New York, Gift of the George and Helen Segal Foundation, 2013-15 Segal worked in a variety of media, but is best known as a sculptor of highly realistic life-size figures.

  • Crime Scenes: Donald Westlake on Film, Seven-Film Series Features
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘CRIME SCENES: DONALD WESTLAKE ON FILM,’ SEVEN- FILM SERIES FEATURES SCREEN ADAPTATIONS OF THE HARD-BOILED CRIME WRITER’S WORK Special event on Friday, May 12: Abby Westlake and Luc Sante in conversation with program curator Levi Stahl May 12–14, 2017 Astoria, Queens, NY, (April 10, 2017)—Donald E. Westlake published nearly a hundred novels under various pseudonyms during his half-century career, the most influential being the hard-boiled Parker novels. Over the years, the hallmarks of a Westlake book never changed: He was a dedicated craftsman, writing clean, unfussy, powerfully effective prose, weaving complicated and surprising plots, and always letting a deep interest in (and often amusement at) human behavior drive the action. His prose has been the font for many and varied works of cinema—more than 30 films have been made of his books. From May 12 through 14, 2017, Museum of the Moving Image presents Crime Scenes: Donald Westlake on Film, an all-35mm screening series, featuring the most successful and interesting films based on Westlake's books. The seven titles include Point Blank (1967) (starring peak Lee Marvin), The Hot Rock (1972) (with Robert Redford), The Outfit (1973) (with Robert Duvall), Cops and Robbers (1973), and Jean-Luc Godard’s Made in U.S.A. (1967). It also includes two for which he wrote screenplays: the 1987 original The Stepfather and his 1990 Oscar- nominated adaptation of Jim Thompson's The Grifters. Organized by guest curator Lev Stahl, Associate Film Curator Eric Hynes, and Chief Curator David Schwartz. Among the highlights of the series is a conversation with Abby Westlake, Donald Westlake’s wife, and historian Luc Sante (Low Life), moderated by guest curator Levi Stahl, with the opening night screening of Point Blank, on May 12.
