3:15 – 4:45 – Rebecca Henry - Practice Strategies for Developing Independence It takes years for a young musician to get to the point where he knows what he wants to hear, recognizes what needs attention, can identify options for how to make improvements, makes a plan to address the issues, and then practices intelligently until progress is made. Though this long road has ups and downs, we can help guide our students towards eventual independent practice from the very first lessons. I will highlight various stages of this transition with specific practice techniques for elementary to advanced level students.

8 Sandy Relief Fund Relief for MTNA-Member Teachers Affected by Superstorm Sandy

As you know, the impact of Sandy continues to affect so many people in , New York and Connecticut, including our colleagues in these areas. MTNA has specifically set up a Sandy Relief Fund to help MTNA members in need, to which the MSMTA board voted to contribute. The MSMTA Board devised the following plan to accomplish this: • Each local association is encouraged to donate $50 to this cause, although more would certainly be accepted! • MSMTA will match the total donations from the local associations up to $1000. • Individuals may donate as well. 1. If a local association is a 501(c)(3) organization, (which allows donations to be tax-deductible), individual checks should be made out to the local association, with a note attached that it is intended for the Sandy Relief Fund. The local association will then combine those checks and the check from the local association, itself, into ONE check, made out and sent to MSMTA. 2. If a local association is NOT a 501(c)(3) organization, individual checks could be made out to MSMTA, which IS a 501(c)(3) organization. • All checks should be received by December 31, 2012. For #1 above, please make sure your local treasurer receives your check by December 26th, so that he or she will have the local, combined check ready by the end of the year. • Checks written to MSMTA should be mailed to Junko Takahashi, 10503 Redosier Ct., Bethesda, MD 20814. • Any questions, please contact Junko at [email protected] or (301) 530-6203.
