Oregon Biography Index Bibliographic Series Number 11 1976 Oregon State University Press Corvallis, Oregon OREGON BIOGRAPHY INDEX Edited by Patricia Brandt and Nancy Guilford Bibliographic Series Number 11 Corvallis Oregon State University 1976 © 1976 Oregon State University Press ISBN 0-87071-131-8 OREGON BIOGRAPHY INDEX INTRODUCTION Oregon Biography Index is intended to serve primarily as a starting point in locating biographies of Oregonians. We have indexed 47 historical volumes which are either entirely devoted to biographies or have large self-contained biographical sections. The profiles in the books vary widely in accuracy and detail. Birth dates of biographees range from Revolutionary times to the first quarter of the 20th century. Not all important or famous Oregonians are included, yet there are many lesser known persons. Most of the articles also include information on parents and other ancestors, children, relatives of a spouse or some- times even friends and colleagues. Rather than trying to decide how fully to index a biographical sketch, we have chosen to include only the name given at the head of each article. All biographies in each volume have been indexed, including those of non-Oregonians. As a result, there are scores of Washingtonians listed, along with some citizens of Idaho, Montana and the mountain states. Arrangement of the index is alphabetical by name of person. Ordinarily, spelling has been accepted as found, and names are as complete as possible within space limitations. Every effort has been made to compare similar names and bring together all biographies of an individual. In spite of our efforts, a few people may be listed in more than one place. If differences in spelling a name have been found, we have used the form which appears to be most widely accepted and have made cross references from variant forms. Consequently, spelling of some names in the index may differ slightly from those in the volumes indexed. Birth dates'have been added, if available, to differentiate between people with the same name. Other birth dates are included if we happened to note them. Beneath the names are a series of symbols representing authors or titles of books. Complete information about the books will be found in the Bibliography of Books Indexed on pages v-vi. After the symbol is the volume number, if applicable, followed by the page numbers on which the biography appears. The abbreviation port. indicates the presence in the volume of a portrait of of the biographee. Whenever possible we indexed from illustration lists in the books because of the possibility of lost plates. Page numbers for portraits are not given, but they are usually close to the biography. Without the support and encouragement of Mr. Stephens Shou, head of the Social Sciences and Humanities Reference Dept., and Mr. Rodney Waldron, Director of Libraries, Oregon State University, we could never have completed this project. To Fumie Tsubakiyama we owe a deep debt of gratitude for her patience and perseverence in typing the manuscript. We dedicate this index to the memory of Mrs. Etta Judd, former Humanities Librarian at Oregon State University. It was her dream to see it published. iii BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BOOKS INDEXED Carey Carey, Charles Henry History of Oregon. Chicago, The Pioneer Historical Publishing Co., 1922. v. 2-3.
