BJ Cole (Pedal Steel) Dan writes music steeped in timeless roots traditions, laced with lyrical twists that narrate modern life. Following on from his 3 EPs (The Balloon, The Bubble, The Box), his debut album is acoustic at heart, sensitively embellished with a creative band of musicians who add their distinctive sounds to Dan’s muse. Delivered in warm, hushed tones, They Care For You opens the record with a forever love song set to a circling acoustic guitar phrase. Single release, My Heart Doesn’t Age (It Just Gets Older) offers wry observations about staying young inside, with a casual spoken verse and chorus sung over a rolling rhythm and guitar figure. With its wheezing accordion, body image theme and wannabe fashion model subject, the bittersweet Three Bodies is more of a waltzing whirligig. Whilst the jaunty jogging banjo of The Fire Of Lust has a definite shanty flavour. Dan describes his approach to song writing: “I write in a bid for clarity. Sometimes thoughts get mixed up, or misunderstood. I believe we hold each other in the communal cradle of our actions, of our words too, and of course (the fun bit in my opinion) our expression.” Dan’s father worked in radio and his parent’s record collection ignited his passion for music as a child: “I was drawn soul singers like Wilson Pickett/Otis Redding and songwriters such as Neil Young, Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne and Elton John.

Athena Andreadis is one of those people who live and breathe and think and talk about music and she writes with the same sort of direct focus. During a one hour Channel 5 / Sky Arts documentary made about her in the UK, legendary songwriter Chris Difford (Squeeze) described Athena as someone who, “writes and sings from the heart. She doesn't need to be packaged by anyone – she is simply and beautifully her." She has the same sort of clear artistic vision that marks out Billie Eilish or Adele or John Legend and it’s matched with a fresh, limitless ambition. Born in London to Greek parents, Athena’s mother would sing her to sleep. Despite all the music around the house, the young Athena was encouraged to study business, so she headed to Bath University but continued performing. After securing a First Class Degree in Business, Athena enrolled at Trinity College, London, where she graduated from with two post-graduate degrees in Classical and Jazz Voice. Her consistent performing throughout her school years inevitably lead to Athena recording her debut album, Breathe With Me, which drew many excellent reviews, indeed The Guardian commenting that she was “Brave and original.

Introduction The BBC welcomes the opportunity to contribute to this review of radio in Wales. Too often, radio is a medium which does not get the recognition it deserves despite its enduring audience appeal and impact. Despite the changing media landscape, BBC Radio remains an integral part of daily life for many. Across the UK, it informs, educates and entertains nearly 35 million people each week. And 95 years since the first radio broadcast in Wales, BBC Radio continues to make a vital contribution to society, culture and national life in Wales. We note that the review has outlined a number of areas it wishes to examine. This evidence is intended to provide the committee with an overview of the BBC’s radio provision overall in Wales. This portfolio encompasses our national radio services – BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and the recently launched Radio Cymru 2 - as well as the BBC’s network radio services. 2. BBC Radio audiences in Wales – an overview BBC Radio attracts more listening in Wales that any other UK nation. Around 70% of adults in Wales hear any BBC Radio each week – a figure well above the other nations: Northern Ireland (59%) and Scotland (60%). In terms of market share, BBC Radio accounts for 56% of all listening hours each week in Wales (with network stations accounting for 48%, and Radio Wales/Radio Cymru adding a further 8%).

Opening with a simple yet driven force, front woman Julie Riley’s grit-fuelled vocals are able to soar. As the chorus arrives, so does the sparkling punk energy as fuzz-filled guitars are played with a seething passion reminiscent of the likes of The Kills or Hole. This is the first time I am HER have used an electric guitar and pedal on their record, giving a fresh take on the band’s distinctively raw sound. Talking about the single, Julie explains, “this song was triggered by someone telling me their experience of an anxiety attack. It got me thinking how anxiety/stress is like a beast separate to us that stalks us and preys on us.” Julie (vocals guitar), formally of 90s cult band Rosa Mota, originally formed I am HER as a solo project in 2016. A year later, she then paired up with Jeff Townsin (drums) and the duo have gone from strength to strength ever since. Their album Herstory received critical acclaim from Uncut and The Crack, as well as BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, BBC Radio London’s Gary Crowley and BBC Radio Wales’ Janice Long to name a few.

Frequency Finder UK (www.frequencyfinder.org.uk) Classic Radio 1 Schedules (1967-2004) October 1967 In the early years, Radio 1 was very different. It was originally conceived as a general popular music network, broadcasting easy listening, jazz, folk and country as well as pop and rock music. The intention was that it would opt out of the Light Programme with music when the Light was carrying a speech programme. This was largely the pattern in the first few years, with a lot of sharing between Radios 1 and 2, though the two stations did carry separate music programmes at breakfast and late afternoon. The daytime schedules didn't fully separate until the 1970s. Another feature of the early schedule is that many programmes featured different presenters on different days or in different weeks. A lot of the presenters floated between several shows.
