Celebrate The Century, the U.S. Postal Service’s colossal commemorative stamp and education program, is making its way across America on a trek reminiscent of this century’s grand tours. A specially outfitted, four-car Amtrak train, the Celebrate The Century Express, is making whistle-stops in more than 100 communities across America to share a 100 years of postal and American history is wealth of information. coming to 100 towns across the U.S. Colorful Celebrate The Century stamp enlargements representing the 1900s through the 1940s adorn the exterior of the Express, which consists of an Amtrak P42 Genesis series diesel locomotive, a baggage car, a modern Amfleet exhibit car featuring Celebrate The Century stamps and related educational displays, a restored vintage Railway Post Office (RPO), and a classic railroad business car. The main exhibit car contains a multimedia exhibit of U.S. postage stamps including those currently available in the Celebrate The Century series. The parallels between stamps and U.S. history are brought to life in a colorful excursion through 100 years of great Celebrating the 20th century on a mobile museum makes for a great field trip. RPO cars were the mainstay of mail transportation from the 1800s until the development and use of commercial air transportation and interstate trucking in the mid 1960s. The RPO car being pulled by the Express was built by the Pullman Company in 1926 and was in service until the 1970s. Authentic lighting and mail sorting equipment was gathered from museums around the country for the restoration, and after the Celebrate The Century Express finishes its national tour in fall 2000, the refurbished RPO car will be donated to a museum.
