This is the first major Strategic Plan developed for our Museums and Galleries Service and the first such comprehensive Plan that I have received as Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture. This is a very important time for our Museums and Galleries Service, as we embark on a huge redevelopment of Nottingham Castle until 2020 – a development that is vital not only to secure the future of this world-renowned site, but as a keystone in the future economic prosperity of the City through the creation and support of new employment. However, the Plan encompasses the future of all of our major heritage sites, including Nottingham Castle Museum, Wollaton Hall and Park, Newstead Abbey with its beautiful gardens and grounds and Greens Mill. It includes an ambitious programme for the development of our outstanding collections, with detailed proposals for associated learning, engagement, digital developments, research and scholarship. Partnership working is vital to this enterprise and the role of partners for service delivery, research or as funders is clearly identified. In particular, the developing role of volunteer engagement, which will be vital to the sector as a whole, is a priority for development. The Service already has considerable expertise in this area and this will serve the wider community well as we aim to develop over the next few years. -

Annual Report 2020 Letter from the president In 2020, we celebrated the second full year of the Tracing Patterns Foundation. Like most of you, we were obliged to adapt to a remote working style. Some plans had to be let go, but new programs that came our way, and some useful new skills were acquired. We achieved some significant goals on a modest budget. The first thing we did was learn how to make informative videos, beginning in-house and then inviting outside textile experts to join in. Ikat, Kasuri and E-gasuri Background and Techniques by Jeffrey Krauss [Originally presented at the opening of the exhibition of antique picture kasuri (Japanese term for ikat) textiles from the collection of Jeffrey Krauss, which took place June 12, 2006 at the Japan Information and Culture Center, Washington DC.] Introduction Kasuri 絣 is the Japanese name for the resist dyeing technique called ikat (pronounced ee-kaht) in other parts of the world. Threads were bundled and portions of the thread bundles were covered with dye-resistant material so that the dye could not penetrate ("resist-dyed") before the fabric was woven. After unbundling, the dyed and undyed edges don’t line up exactly in the weaving process, resulting in a blurred or “splashed” effect. Both in Japan and throughout the world, ikat or kasuri-dyed textile designs were most often abstract or geometric. But in Japan, craftsmen developed the skill of making picture kasuri (e-gasuri 絵絣). Futon covers, sleeping blankets and jackets carried woven pictures of auspicious symbols, signs of prosperity and longevity: pine, bamboo and plum blossoms; cranes and tortoises; lobsters; paulownia leaves; noshi; gods like Daikoku, Hotei and Ebisu; legends and legendary figures like Takasago (legend of an old married couple), Daruma (the father of Zen Buddhism) and Shojo (fantastic underwater creatures); and fantastic devices like treasure bags, magic jewels and wish-granting mallets. Resist Dyeing Techniques Resist dyeing is a patterning technique in which sections of the warp threads, the weft threads or the woven cloth are covered or reserved, in order to prevent dye from penetrating. -

Compression Resist: Shibori, Clamp-resist, and Ikat 2.5 防染印花 Inscribed Cotton Ikat from Yemen in the Tenth Century CE BIER Carol Research Associate, The Textile Museum, Washington, DC, [email protected] Visiting Scholar, Center for Islamic Studies, Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley CA Keywords: Ikat, cotton, Yemen, Islamic, textile, inscription, Arabic, gold Abstract More than a thousand years ago, Baghdad was capital of the Islamic empire under the Abbasid caliphs, and Yemen was a flourishing center of agriculture and trade. Among its famous products were dyestuffs, and cotton cloth with warp stripes, patterned using techniques of compression resist. As the strength of the Abbasid caliphate declined and claims to power gained hold in the provinces, regional artistic styles began to emerge. The rulers of Yemen adopted one of the prerogatives of the Abbasid caliphs, bestowing honor by rewarding their subjects with inscribed textiles called tiraz. From burial sites in Egypt, many such textiles have survived in fragmentary condition, often with warp fringes, and occasionally with Arabic inscriptions bearing historical names and dates, Qur’anic excerpts, and pious invocations. Acquired by dealers in the middle of the 20th century, they found their way to museums in Europe and North America (The Textile Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Royal Ontario Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, David Collection, etc.).
