  • Letter NATURALS + BEST of the BLOGGERS + LATEST LAUNCHES
THE www.perfumesociety.org NO. 32 - HIGH SUMMER 2018 scentedTHE NEW letter NATURALS + BEST OF THE BLOGGERS + LATEST LAUNCHES Flower power! editor’s LEttER It has been the greatest summer for flowers and gardens that I can ever remember. I’ll be hanging onto the precious memories of rambling roses, scrambling jasmine and aromatic lavender, as autumn arrives. And since fragrance offers us a way of wallowing in the beauty of flowers, 365 days a year, we thought we’d devote this entire issue to flowers – and their infinite power to delight us. A key trend we’re seeing at The Perfume Society is the revival in floral fragrances for men. And why not? Put jasmine or rose or violet on a man’s skin, and we find it’s expressed in a quite different way to a woman’s. Of course, once upon a time, florals were widely-worn among men – back in the days before marketing came into play and fragrances acquired ‘gender’. It probably isn’t coincidence that as that becomes blurred again in the wider world (and about time, too), men’s florals are being worn loudly and proudly. So we asked Darren Scott to hand-pick the best men’s florals – and on p.22, he shares a positive bouquet of them. One perfumery house known for capturing the magic of flowers is LMR Naturals. Who?, I hear you chorus. Well, you may not know LMR’s name – but you’ll no doubt be familiar with dozens of fragrances which include the petalicious notes they extract (via various clever techniques) from nature’s floral bounty.

From a close reading of the original Portuguese by the third author of this study, Correa, we found an important insight regarding the specific working of ‘oppression,” and by contrast, the ‘praxis’ which informs the process of liberation. Freire actually employed a viral metaphor when describing oppression by saying that the oppressed act as a ‘host’ of the oppression. This symbiotic relationship between the oppressed and oppressor is implied in the published text when the passage states that “the oppressed,. are at the same time themselves and the oppressor whose image they have internal- ized” (p. 43). This viral conception of the oppression process is also reflected in the dynamics of Freire’s conception of the oppressive teacher-student relationship when he writes, “A careful analysis of the teacher-student relationship at any level, inside or outside the school, reveals its fundamentally narrative character. This re- lationship involves a narrating Subject (the teacher) and patient listening objects (the students). The contents, whether values or empirical dimensions of reality, tend in the process of being narrated to become lifeless and petrified. Education is suffering from narration sickness (p.

splash! That Flawless Formation / Intersectional Feminism in Modern Culture Resource Guide Saturday, April 30, 2016 Friend Hall, Room 108 Transcript Of Beyonce's 'Lemonade' Because The Words Are Just As Important As The Music 3 days ago Entertainment Remember how confused you felt after seeing the trailer for Lemonade? Well, if you watched Beyoncé's visual album on HBO, which combined film, art, and some incredible new songs, it may have left you just as perplexed. From diving off buildings to cheating allegations to wedding photos, the visuals, along with the poetic music, were topnotch. It left fans feeling #blessed, but also with tons of unanswered questions. Is Lemonade all about Jay Z? Is it about Beyoncé's parents? Did Jay Z cheat on her? Is everything OK? But perhaps the most powerful element to the album was Beyoncé's speaking parts throughout the songs and chapters, which features poetry by Warsan Shire, a SomaliBritish poet. More often than not, the words in Lemonade were eerie. What does it all mean? Beyoncé speaks slowly and distinctly against quiet backgrounds with crickets in the distance. "Anger" ends with the words "Why can't you see me? Everyone else can," while "Apathy" begins with, "So what are you gonna say at my funeral, now that you've killed me?" In the middle of "Resurrection," she says, "Why are you afraid of love? You think it's not possible for someone like you. But you are the love of my life." Deep stuff, am I right? So what else did Beyoncé say in Lemonade? Here it is, broken down by title: "Intuition" I tried to make a home out of you, but doors lead to trap doors, a stairway leads to nothing.

DEADLY HEAT IN U.S. (TEXAS) PRISONS Opposing the cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of Texas inmates through exposure to extreme heat The grave of Albert Hinojosa, who died of heatstroke in a Texas prison October 15, 2014 A shadow report of the United States’ periodic report, prepared for the United Nations Committee Against Torture on the occasion of its 53rd session Written by the University of Texas School of Law Human Rights Clinic This report does not reflect the official position of the School of Law or of the University ofTexas. The views presented here reflect only the opinions of the Human Rights Clinic. Image by Lauren Schneider Executive Summary The United States continues to violate its obligations under Article 16 of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (“the Convention”) by failing to prevent and eradicate the cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment and punishment of inmates in Texas Department of Criminal Justice (“TDCJ”) prisons as well as other state prisons around the nation.1 In the past seven years, at least fourteen inmates have died as a direct result of extreme heat exposure while incarcerated in TDCJ facilities, where internal summertime heat indices can exceed 149°F (65°C) as early as 10:30AM.2 The U.S. has stated that federalism and state sov- ereignty issues do not override its Convention duty to prevent such treatment or punishment.3 More- over, the U.S. has formally acknowledged its power to affect change in state prison conditions. In a 1994 report to the Committee Against Torture (“CAT”), the U.S.

  • Intra-Urban Microclimate Investigation in Urban Heat Island Through A
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Intra‑urban microclimate investigation in urban heat island through a novel mobile monitoring system Ioannis Kousis1,2, Ilaria Pigliautile1,2 & Anna Laura Pisello1,2* Monitoring microclimate variables within cities with high accuracy is an ongoing challenge for a better urban resilience to climate change. Assessing the intra‑urban characteristics of a city is of vital importance for ensuring fne living standards for citizens. Here, a novel mobile microclimate station is applied for monitoring the main microclimatic variables regulating urban and intra‑ urban environment, as well as directionally monitoring shortwave radiation and illuminance and hence systematically map for the frst time the efect of urban surfaces and anthropogenic heat. We performed day‑time and night‑time monitoring campaigns within a historical city in Italy, characterized by substantial urban structure diferentiations. We found signifcant intra‑urban variations concerning variables such as air temperature and shortwave radiation. Moreover, the proposed experimental framework may capture, for the very frst time, signifcant directional variations with respect to shortwave radiation and illuminance across the city at microclimate scale. The presented mobile station represents therefore the key missing piece for exhaustively identifying urban environmental quality, anthropogenic actions, and data driven modelling toward risk and resilience planning. It can be therefore used in combination with satellite data, stable weather station or other mobile stations, e.g. wearable sensing techniques, through a citizens’ science approach in smart, livable, and sustainable cities in the near future. Within recent decades the rural-to-urban population fow has substantially increased. In 2016, 54% of the world population was reported to live in urbanised areas.
