It always breaks my heart to read of those who have seen their TTs cross over the Rainbow Bridge and it 5 thru 7 seems I have seen more and more of them. Temperament Testing TTHWF & YOUR RESCUE TEAM 8 Camille and her team did a fabulous job with our last AKC Nosework rescue. Let’s just hope the need for her services will be minimal in the upcoming year. Even if they are, your support, 9 both financially and personally are still needed!     Primary Lens Luxation Affected breeds: Australian Cattle Dog, Chinese Crested Dog, Jack Russell Terrier, Lancashire Heeler, Miniature Bull Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier, Patterdale Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Tibetan Terrier, Welsh Terrier, Wire-haired Fox Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier Primary lens luxation (PLL) is an inherited eye disease which leads to blindness. In affected dogs, the tiny fibres which hold the lens in place in the eyeball start to break down and the lens can fall out of position and cause glaucoma and blindness. This can be extremely painful. Typically an affected dog would develop signs of PLL at 3 - 8 years of age. The condition is caused by an inherited mutation in a gene which is required for the healthy construction of the lens fibres. A puppy which inherits the mutation from both of his parents is extremely likely to develop PLL. His parents, on the other hand, who each have only one copy of the mutation, are at a much reduced risk of developing PLL; this is estimated at 2 – 20%. This test is particularly useful for breeders: o To identify CARRIER and AFFECTED individuals among their dogs; these individuals should be regularly examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist. o To identify CARRIER and AFFECTED individuals among their breeding stock so that they can avoid mating combinations which would risk AFFECTED puppies. This test will be reported as: CLEAR : free of the PLL mutation, and unlikely to develop primary lens luxation. The possibility remains of developing lens luxation due to a non- inherited cause such as trauma. CARRIER : has one copy of the mutation and has a low risk of developing PLL during their lifetime; this is estimated at 2 – 20%.

Results show that, compared to pure breed dogs, cross-breed dogs were more likely to be reported in welfare complaints. Poisoning, lack of veterinary support, abuse, and being left unattended in a hot vehicle were common complaints in pure breed dogs; while insufficient shelter, exercise and food/water, as well as overcrowding and abandonment, were more commonly reported in cross breed dogs. Utility breeds, terriers and working dogs were most likely to be reported, while toy, non-sporting breeds and gundogs were least likely to be reported. Common complaint types for utility dogs were: insufficient food/water, shelter and exercise, and poor living conditions; for terriers: abandonment, intentional abuses and killing or injuring another animal; for working dogs: insufficient food/water, shelter and exercise; for toy dogs: lack of veterinary care, overcrowding and staying in a hot vehicle alone; for non-sporting dogs: lack of veterinary care, being left in a hot vehicle unattended and poor body conditions; and for hounds: killing or injuring another animal, intentional abuses and poor body conditions.
