Conformation Judges Biographies for The 2022 National Specialty Vote

Lisa Warren I began my involvement in purebred in 1965 with obedience, but I soon realized that my true passion was in breeding and conformation. My husband and I bred multiple BIS winners in both Dachshunds and Akitas while living in Australia from 1983 to 1990. After returning home to America, I served on the Dachshund Club of America’s Board of Directors and as the founding Chairman of the DCA Health & Welfare Trust Fund for fifteen years, and as Judges Education Coordinator for 10 years. I am currently approved by the AKC to judge the Sporting, Hound, Non-Sporting and Toy Groups, and most Working breeds. I have also had the pleasure of judging in England, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. I am intrigued by the Tibetan Terrier’s history and development and have always enjoyed judging this unique, lovely breed. It is truly an honor to be nominated to judge the 2022 National Specialty Show. Thank you.

Dana Cline In the late 1960's, Dana Cline's parents gave him his first Great Dane and from that moment he knew that he would have a lifetime of involvement with this breed and with dogs.

As a young child he exhibited in 4H, training in both obedience and conformation. He found the show world in his teenage years, spending nearly every weekend traveling to shows, helping professional handlers and handling dogs for friends with other breeds as well. While his main interest was always in Great Danes, he worked hard to learn about other breeds and to become more active in all breeds. All of his weekends spent at dogs shows eventually led him to a career as a professional handler, where he specialized in Danes and sight hounds, but also handling various other breeds along the way.

Breeding has always been a favorite aspect of this sport for Mr. Cline and currently breeds and exhibits Tibetan Mastiffs and Italian Greyhounds. He has bred nearly 100 champions in a number of breeds, primarily Great Danes, but also Borzoi, German Wirehaired Pointers, Miniature Bull Terriers, Beagles, Italian Greyhounds, and Tibetan Mastiffs and is also a Breeder of Merit. He was a long time member of the Great Dane Club of America. He is a member of The American Association.

Mr Cline is an All-Breed Judge. He has judged in a number of foreign countries, multiple National Specialties, as well as many of the country's top shows. He was also the Recipient of the 2017 AKC Judge of the Year.

Ms. Lee Whittier, CV 2020

Ms. Lee Whittier has been involved in the sport of purebred dogs for over three decades. Her involvement began as owner, exhibitor and subsequently a breeder of Rottweilers. She has also owned Akitas, Bullmastiffs and a Sussex Spaniel. She currently owns, breeds, and exhibits Tibetan Terriers.

Ms. Whittier began judging in 2000, and then took a hiatus for several years to work for The American Kennel Club as an Executive Field Representative in the Pacific Northwest. She returned to judging in 2011 and currently judges the Working, Terrier, Toy and Non-Sporting groups, six Hounds breeds as well as Best In Show.

Ms. Whittier has judged dog shows around the world, from the United States to Asia, at small shows and large, all of great importance to each and every exhibitor. Some of the larger shows are Westminster Kennel Club, Kennel Club of Philadelphia, Del Valle, Great Western Terrier Association, Northern California Terrier Association, Hatboro, Malibu Kennel Club and Kennel Club of Palm Springs.

Ms. Lee Whittier is a standing member of Dog Fanciers of Oregon, the American Rottweiler Club and the Tibetan Terrier Club of America. She is Show Chair for Vancouver Kennel Club and the Terrier Association of Oregon January show with Rose City Classic. As an active member in numerous clubs, she has worked in the capacity of show chair, president, vice-president, secretary, board member and Constitution & By-laws Revision Committee member in several clubs.

In addition to judging, Ms. Whittier developed the Dog Show Mentor program, exclusively for owner handlers. This is an online program where owner handlers of all stages and levels learn to develop an individual, strategic approach to showing dogs. She also travels to speak to owner handlers all over the world.

She currently lives in Vancouver, Washington with her husband, Wayne and their three Tibetan Terriers. Her other interests include gardening and hiking with the dogs.

My passion for the TT began over 20 years ago when I lived in Vermont. At the time I wasn’t in a position to have Tibetan Terriers but when I moved to the Pacific Northwest my dreams came true. I have loved every minute of being with this extraordinary breed. It would be an honor for me to judge our National! Lee 7 November/December, 2019

AKC Temperament Test

On Aug. 27, 2019 AKC announced the AKC Temperament Test. The ATT is open to all breeds including mixed breed dogs. Clubs can start testing November 1.

The temperament of any dog is an important characteristic. Temperament is a dog's natural predisposition to react a certain way to a stimulus. The AKC Temperament Test includes test items in the following six categories: social, auditory, visual, tactile (touch) proprioceptive (motion) and an unexpected stimulus.

The ATT is a noncompetitive, pass-fail test that will screen for fear, shyness, inability to recover, and lack of cooperation. Desired traits are that the dog will be emotionally stable, inquisitive, appropriately social, biddable and recovers from a startling situation in a reasonable amount of time.

"Temperament is an important consideration for all breeders and owners," said Doug Ljungren, Executive Vice President of Sports and Events." "The purpose of the AKC Temperament Test is to bring focus and meaningful evaluation to the assessment of temperament in our canine companions."

On Saturday Dec. 7, 2019 Metshag Going My Way (Zoe) and Metshag Namaste Norah (Norah) attended the first local AKC Temperament Test held at the Cudahy Kennel Club. The dogs need to pass two tests under two different judges to add the TT to their registered name. I am happy to announce that both Zoe at age 17 and Norah at age 6 passed with flying colors! They are the first Tibetan Terriers with the Title!

AKC Canine Health Foundation Announces $2.8 Million in Canine Health Grants in 2019 11/05/2019

MEDIA CONTACT: Sharon M. Albright, DVM, CCRT Manager of Communications & Veterinary Outreach AKC Canine Health Foundation Phone: 919-334-4019 E-mail: [email protected]

RALEIGH, NC (November 5, 2019) – The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) announces another year of growth in grants awarded for canine health research.

In 2019, CHF has awarded 46 new research grants totaling over $2.8 million to benefit canine health. CHF currently manages 135 active grants representing grants funding totaling more than $10.8 million, bringing total funding to $52.9 million for canine health research and educational programs. Outcomes from this funding have resulted in more than 775 publications in peer-reviewed journals since its founding in 1995.

In addition to addressing overall health concerns for all dogs, CHF’s ongoing hemangiosarcoma, tick-borne disease, and epilepsy research initiatives provided expanded funding opportunities for these important diseases during 2019. In addition, CHF and their donors continued funding new educational grants to support the American Kennel Club/AKC Canine Health Foundation/Theriogenology Foundation Small Animal Theriogenology Residency Program, and their Clinician-Scientist Fellowship Program.

As part of the educational outreach component of their mission, CHF sponsored five webinars by CHF-funded investigators on topics such as CBD oil use for dogs, updates on canine influenza, canine degenerative myelopathy, early maternal influences on puppies being raised as service dogs, and discussion of spay/neuter on overall health, providing continuing education for veterinary professionals, dog owners, and breeders. Also, CHF hosted the National Parent Club Canine Health Conference in St. Louis, MO in August. The biennial event, sponsored by Purina, brought together researchers, American Kennel Club (AKC) Parent Club members, breeders, veterinarians, veterinary residents, and veterinary students to discuss the latest findings in canine health research.

“We are honored to collaborate with the best scientists, breeders, veterinarians and dog lovers to achieve better health for all dogs,” states CHF CEO, Dr. Diane Brown. “As we enter our 25th year in 2020, we look forward to creating more opportunities to advance canine health research.”

CHF earned a highest four-star rating from Charity Navigator again this year and maintained its platinum rating from GuideStar, demonstrating programs excellence and that it exceeds industry standards for fiscal responsibility, accountability and transparency, and outperforms most charities in its category.

Matched funding opportunities provided a means for CHF donors to double their impact on canine health in 2019. The AKC continues to match donations from new and lapsed donors and the American Dog Charitable Foundation is matching donations for hemangiosarcoma research.

With gratitude for their donors’ support, CHF continues to achieve its mission to advance the health of all dogs and their owners by funding scientific research and supporting the dissemination of health information to prevent, treat and cure canine disease. Donation information can be found at akcchf.org/donate.

FYI: Current legislation information. https://www.akc.org/legislative-alerts/u-s-senate-proposal-require-usda-publish-privately-identifiable- breeder-information-including-home-addresses-pets-owned/

Several months ago, a last-minute amendment was made to section 760 of the 2020 House Agriculture Appropriations bill that would require the USDA to make privately identifiable information about licensed breeders, including home addresses, pet inventories, and other sensitive information, available to the public online. That measure currently awaits reconciliation and attention from Senate appropriators.

This week, an amendment proposed by Senator Dianne Feinstein to the Senate FY 2020 combined "minibus" Appropriation Bill would add the same troublesome provisions to the Senate version.

AKC urges you to contact members of the Senate Appropriations Committee and urge them to protect privacy rights by voting against any amendments to the FY 2020 Appropriations Bill that would require USDA to release privately identifiable information about pet breeders as part of the USDA's online Animal Care Information System (ACIS).

Background In July 2016, APHIS formally initiated a comprehensive review and update of ACIS, including its website, publications, and correspondence to eliminate out-of-date content, improve the information provided, and balance its commitment to transparency with applicable laws, including rules protecting personal privacy. The review and removal of this information from the APHIS's website was prompted by litigation surrounding the publication of information on non- finally-adjudicated violations and privacy concerns. As part of this review, the APHIS/ACIS public search tool was taken off-line temporarily on February 3, 2017 and APHIS immediately began reposting inspection reports, with the appropriate redactions of personal information. It is these privacy protections that some now seek to remove.

When most people think of the term "pet dealer", they typically think of professional pet breeding facilities where a large number of animals are kept, and hundreds are bred and sold each year. However, current USDA Animal Welfare regulations require that any individual who maintains more than a combined total of four "breeding" (unspayed) female small mammals including hamsters, gerbils, cats, dogs, etc. and transfers one sight unseen is subject to licensing as a USDA pet dealer (breeder). As a result, many individuals who live in residential areas, may keep several species of family pets in their home, ranging from the kids' hamsters, to a barn cat or two, along with several dogs that participate in conformation or performance events -- and breed only rarely, are also subject to USDA licensing.

Continued on the next page

11 November/December, 2019

Yesterday, the USDA released a notice of proposed modifications to its ACIS database, along with a discussion of federal privacy laws governing use of records, and the routine use of existing records. AKC encourages you to contact key members of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Senate Agricultural Appropriations Committees listed below by phone or email. We particularly urge constituent residents of Alabama, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Oregon, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Kansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana, to reach out to these Appropriators.

Please urge them to protect privacy rights by voting against any amendments to the FY 2020 Appropriations Bill that would require USDA to release privately identifiable information about pet breeders as part of the USDA's online Animal Care Information System (ACIS).

Rocky Mountain Tibetan Terrier Club Annual Holiday Party

On Saturday, December 7th, the RMTTC got together at the home of TT owners Marcia and Sterling Babcock, for the annual holiday party. All members brought a gift for the gift exchange. Our pups love the gift exchange, because often they are the recipients of a rather nice squeaky toy or some absolutely delicious snacks.

Each member brought a side dish or dessert and the Babcock’s roasted a wonderful turkey. We had sweet potato casserole, wonderful pizza, and a very tasty wild rice casserole, to name just a few delicacies. Our host pups watched us delve in to the goodies hoping someone would be clumsy and drop a snack.

Each year we bring sacks of dry and canned dog and cat food for a donation to a local animal charity. Pet Pantry is a local charity headquartered in Boulder with locations in many of the front range towns. The charity is run very much like the regular food bank. People who are having a hard time are able to sign up to receive food for their animals. Often the pet food is distributed right at the food banks. Pet food assistance often make it possible for those in need to keep their animals, which means these animals don’t end up in animal shelters. It’s a win win for pets, their owners, and local animal shelters. RMTTC was able to donate enough food to fill a large cart.
