Curry The presence of early modern Spanish history in Spanish film has received only limited scholarly attention. The entire group of Spanish films dealing with the Spanish early modern era has never been placed under study by any overarching research. This dissertation reframes the evolution of the cinematographic representation of the Spanish past as it studies the mechanisms employed by Spanish films in representing an essential part of Spanish past: early modernity. Studied are 19 period films that group themselves around some of most representative subjects in early modernity: the Monarchy and Nobility, and the Spanish Inquisition. -

artikel t Philip II’s Quest The Appointment of Governors-General during the Dutch Revolt (1559-1598) violet soen Recent historiographical studies have presented the Habsburg appointment of 3 governors-general during the Dutch Revolt as the outcome of factional infighting at the Spanish Court. While this so-called ‘faction model’ has yielded new bmgn/lhcr | deel 126 - 1 | 3 - 29 insights, it also raises a number of problems. Firstly, in the new model, the role of the dynasty is unduly relegated to the background – even though Philip II’s appointment decisions were mainly driven by dynastic considerations. Secondly, the power struggle at the Spanish Court was not only a conflict between court factions, but also between noble houses vying for prestige and trying to secure positions for their offspring. Thirdly, there is an excessive focus on the Spanish Court, while the feuds between noble houses in the Low Countries also played a role in the interim appointments made during the Revolt. Finally, Philip II always looked for the most suitable candidate in terms of administration and warfare during the Dutch Revolt, in accordance with the constraints of the composite Spanish monarchy. Only the combination of these four (frequently contradictory) motives reveals how Philip II’s appointment of governors can be seen as a quest for the right man or woman in the right place. Early modern history was long viewed as a dynastic story featuring ‘great men’ and ‘great women’.1 This account has rightly been challenged: since the 1970s, under the influence of the social sciences, research has focused on early modern networks and power elites.2 This also changed the perspective on the Spanish monarchy: it was no longer the dynasty but the internal faction struggle at the Spanish Court that was identified as underpinning power relationships in the Habsburg empire. -

INTRODUCTION On 25thApril 2007, the Cooperation Network of the European Routes of Emperor Charles V was created in Medina de Pomar (Burgos) with the objective of protecting and promoting the tourist, historical-cultural and economic resources of the European Routes of Charles V. Currently it comprises more than 60 cities and historical sites along the length and breadth of the journeys covered by Charles Hapsburg between 1517 and 1557. Since 2007 the Network has been developing its extensive work in the construction of a wide cultural and tourist programme centred on the figure and work of Charles Hapsburg.
