Glade Evenson One of the false statements that stuck out the most to me is Mr. Eric Hamiel Abramson’s claim that “more people were killed in traffic accidents Jeff Hannahs involving large trucks this year than have died in all of the domestic Francis Hamm commercial airline crashes over the past 45 years.” ...implying fault Randy Hartley 100% to the trucker. As Mr. Graves pointed out in his response letter, Larry Klaahsen “Per the most recent federal data available, upwards of two thirds of Jerred Koppmann all serious crashes involving large trucks are caused by the action of Jody Kuper someone other than the professional driver.” Justin Larson Jerry Ollerich Mr. Abramson also talked about the trucking industry opposing tech- Matt Parker nologies like airbags, electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes. SDTA’s Past Chairpersons The Opinion Article also talks about Congress pursuing “a number of Stan Anders steps to roll back safety improvements ordered by federal regulators.” Larry Anderson Mr. Abramson talks about Congress eliminating “the requirement that Robert Appelwick drivers take a two-day break each week.” This is the opposite of the Ted Bultsma steps Congress put in place. Page 4 ~ SEPTEMBER 2015 TRUCKING NEWS South Dakota Trucking News PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE is published monthly by the Well, the 2015 SDTA Annual Convention was a huge success! Those who attended the Convention in Sioux Falls all agree that it was a great event. The Sioux Falls Convention Center took very good care of us and the weather was fantastic for golf at Bakker Crossing. Not having the exact attendance numbers, I am confident the numbers were up a bit. I do know the room was full for every event and the trade show area was also filled PO Box 89008 with booths and displays. Sioux Falls, SD 57109-9008 Phone: 605-334-8871 I want to congratulate Mr. Alton Palmer for being cho- sen to receive the 2015 SDTA Chairman’s Award. Alton Fax: 605-334-1938 is not only a personal friend of mine, but he is also a benevolent supporter and overall www.southdakotatrucking.com asset to the South Dakota Trucking Association. I also want to congratulate Blachowske Annual Subscription FOR $35.00 Truck Lines for being selected to receive the South Dakota Highway Patrol/South Dakota Trucking Association Partnership In Safety Award. In addition, as the Master of Ceremo- nies at the Chairman’s Banquet, it is always a pleasure to be involved in the Driver of SDTA STAFF MEMBERS the Year presentation. Congratulations to Mr. Mike Whitehead for receiving that honor this year. Finally I want to congratulate Ms. Jenny Thorson for being honored as the Myron L. Rau Safety Director of the Year. As you can see, there was a long list of very deserving award President recipients this year! [email protected] We also had the privilege of having Mr. Chris Spear from the American Trucking As- sociations (ATA) give the keynote presentation at the convention. Chris is in charge of the lobbyist core for ATA’s Captiol Hill Office. He is very well respected and probably the Michelle Wells best and brightest lobbyist I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Mr. Spear updated the Executive Assistant crowd about what is and is not happening on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. [email protected] I again want to thank the Associates for their support. Without that support, we could not have an annual convention at all, much one that is a huge success. Please mark your calendars and plan to join your industry partners and friends at the 2016 Annual Pam Kolseth Convention of the South Dakota Trucking Association that is scheduled for September 7 Comptroller through 9, 2016 at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn, in Rapid City. [email protected] The annual convention and trade show for the ATA is coming soon. The event will be held in Philadelphia, PA on October 18th through the 21st. Mr. Rick Hoogendoorn and I will be in attendance. It will be interesting to get a report on how things are progress- JaY Steensma ing regarding all of the federal regulations that this industry is affected by. If you have Printshop Manager anything you want carried to this meeting, please do not hesitate to contact Rick or I. [email protected] I have been extremely busy since the beginning of August with little relief until Novem- ber. However, if you need to talk to me, I am always available to any member that is in need. Simply call your SDTA Office and leave me a voice message (keep in mind that all Patty Hinz voice messages come immediately to my cell phone as a wave file) and I will call you Office Assistant/Graphic Designer back as soon as I possibly can. [email protected] Remember, running water never grows stagnant! Get involved and stay involved. Stay SAFE! Until next month . . .

Page 6 ~ SEPTEMBER 2015 TRUCKING NEWS from the desk of robert christian The annual SDTA convention was a grand success as usual, a thank you to the SDTA staff. This event takes a lot of organizing and work to put it together. Congratulations to Mike Whitehead from FedEx Freight for being selected as Driver of the Year. I also offer congratulations to all drivers of the month over the past year as nominees; your safety records and miles driven are impressive and something to be very proud of. It was very special to see Alton Palmer receive the Chairman’s Award this year. Thank you Alton for everything you have done over the years and for everything I know you will do in the years to come. A warm and special thank you to all the sponsors; without you this convention would not be possible. Motivational speaker, Mr. Dan Baker, talked about driver shortage, pride in being a driver, the perception of a driver and many other aspects of the industry. One of the most notable statements he made paralleled an article I recently read in an insurance magazine. We don’t just need to recruit new drivers, we also need to create business families that drivers want to work for. In recruiting we need to be honest about exceptions, , home time and pay. I see these attributes in our SDTA fleet operators when interacting with them and visiting with their drivers. The business session on safety issues, document management, e-logging and reasonable suspicion training was very good. It was interesting to find out how detailed a drug and alcohol policy needs to be in order to be implemented ef- fectively and enforced. We had an impressive panel of experts that talked about EPA changes in 2016, how important the care of handling and storing of DEF additive is. The changes in lubricants that will be made to care for the newer engines and how they are different from the current lubricants. Chris Spear, ATA chief lobbyist is always a pleasure to listen to. Chris addressed all of the trucking issues on Capitol Hill, highway funding, speed limiters and EOBR’S. If this all sounds like a lot to take on in a couple of days it was, but we also found plenty of time for some quality social- izing and enjoyed some very good entertainment. Thank you to everyone who supported and participated in the 2015 Annual Convention.

There’s always tomorrow, right? But what if your procrastination could negatively affect your health?

No one likes to talk about colonoscopies, but this screening could protect you from the country’s second leading cancer killer in both men and women – colon cancer.

What you should know: Colon cancer often starts as a benign growth, or polyp, on the lining of the large intestine or rectum. While most polyps are harmless, they can eventually turn into cancer.

There are few symptoms of colon cancer in its earliest stages. But in the later stages, symptoms can include rectal bleeding, stomach cramps, weight loss, change in bowel habits or fatigue.

“Through a colonoscopy, we can check for polyps,” says Brett Baloun, MD, gastroenterologist at Sanford Center for Digestive Health. “If any are found, they can be removed and sent for analysis to check for cancer, or prevent cancer from forming.”

And if those polyps are found early, the chances of it developing into cancer are greatly reduced. But if cancer is detected, it’s 90 percent treatable when discovered in its earliest stages.

“These are two very good reasons to get a colonoscopy as recommended,” says Dr. Baloun. “Especially when the procedure itself is easy. Often fear can hold people back from getting a colonoscopy, but this screening could save a life.”

Why is everyone so afraid? Colonoscopies typically last approximately 30 minutes and patients are sedated to provide comfort. However, the procedure is typically not the biggest fear factor, it’s what is required before the procedure.

“What most people dread is the prep, which requires cleansing the colon as well as possible,” says Dr. Baloun. “Talk with your physician about your options and develop a prep plan based on your circumstances.”

Always remember that you are not alone. To help raise awareness, people in the media have even taken to documenting their colonoscopies. This not only provides people with helpful information, but also reminds us that no adult is exempt from needing a colonoscopy.

Who needs screening?: Men and women with no history of colon cancer should start regular screenings at age 50. As long as the results are normal, most people can wait another 10 years before having another procedure.

“If you have a personal history of polyps, colorectal cancer or inflammatory bowel disease, or a family history of colon cancer or polyps, your risk for cancer increases,” says Dr. Baloun. “In that case, screenings may need to begin before 50, and be per- formed more often.”

Additional risk factors include smoking, obesity, inactive lifestyle, heavy alcohol use and Crohn’s disease.

It’s time to start: If you’ve been putting off the inevitable, make scheduling a colonoscopy a priority.

“This is the definition of preventive medicine, which is the best medicine we have,” says Dr. Baloun. “There just aren’t any excuses for not taking some time out of your day to protect your health, well-being and possibly your life.”
