Lloyd Bultsma I would also like to convey a special thanks to all Robert Christian Brian Clark of our associate members who took the time to set up and display their products and Art Donovan services. You all did an awesome job. Please welcome Robert Christian as our newest Bryan Eden member on the SDTA Executive Committee. I know he has been and will continue to be Francis Hamm a great asset to this association. As you read through this edition of the Trucking News, Randy Hartley please recognize the folks who received the awards. If you meet them on the road or Larry Klaahsen anywhere else, give them the congratulations they have earned. Thank them for the Jerred Koppmann good job they are doing, especially the Driver of the Year and the Safety Director of the Jody Kuper year winners. Congratulations to all the recipients of these awards and a great big thanks to Robert Punt all the sponsors. These sponsorships make these conventions possible. Thursday, most Wade Stebbins of us headed to The Elks Golf Course for a day of some fun, some frustration, some Dan Swenson bragging, maybe a little swearing and a few beers. The wind was blowing pretty hard Dave Stoterau so golfing was a bit challenging. Congratulations to the teams who placed and also Jeff Watkins to the pin prize winners. It was a great day!!! Thursday evening another great buffet Bud Westendorf was served up, golf prizes were passed out and the live band did a great job. We even Bob Willey had a few leg shakers on the dance floor. Friday started with a very funny, uplifting, highly motivated speaker as we all ate a hot breakfast buffet. He encouraged us all SDTA’S PAST CHAIRPERSONS to laugh, learn, love and leave a legacy. Very good presentation. Next we had our first Stan Anders business session with BNSF. The presentation covered train crossing safety. It was very Larry Anderson interesting and informative. The one statistic that sticks in my mind is the majority Robert Appelwick Ted Bultsma of train-vehicle accidents result from truckers or motorists trying to beat the train to Rich Burns the crossing. Let's not do that. Please be safe and obey the railroad crossing signs. Darrold Dean Simultaneously another business session was held discussing how to maximize your Bernard Feldhaus insurance coverage effectively and efficiently. This session was run by Bill Rezac of Rick Hoogendoorn Boen & Associates. We appreciate that Bill took the time to share some tips and give Alton Palmer professional advice. Our next business session was presented by Kylla Leeburg, Deputy Jeff Parker Director of Truckers Against Trafficking. The presentation was eye-opening. It is hard to Gene Phillips imagine all the young people in our own country that this horrible crime has happened Michelle Schipper to or is continuing to happen to. I am so glad that we as an association are supporting Randy Thompson and contributing help to this cause. As I say after every convention, “Those that did not attend missed a great event.” SDTA STAFF MEMBERS I would like to highlight several items for all readers. I will not specifically name the award winners because you will pictorially see the winners in this edition of the MYRON L. RAU Trucking News. I personally offer my congratulations to the recipients of Driver of President the Year Award, the Safety Director of the Year Award, the Fleet Safety Award win- [email protected] ner, the Chairman’s Award winner, the Pride of the Show winner and the Partner in Safety award winner. All of these award winners are very worthy and deserving; plus MICHELLE WELLS it is even more special when award winners are not expecting to receive their award. Executive Assistant The association also went through a “change of the guard” at the convention. Mr. Mike Habeck accepted the Chairman of the Board gavel from Mr. Rick Hoogendoorn. [email protected] From the entire staff, we want to thank Rick for a job well done for his two-year term as chairman. I personally appreciate his guidance and dedication. Also, rest PAM KOLSETH assured, we are in good hands with Mike at the helm. Comptroller [email protected] Several months ago, South Dakota Highway Patrol Captain John Broers called to tell me the SDHP Carrier Services Officers would be holding their annual meeting in Rapid City at the same time as the 2014 SDTA Convention. John suggested that JAY STEENSMA we get the officers from his district together with our convention attendees for some Printshop Manager socializing and to attend some joint seminars. Having those 60 officers with us on [email protected] Thursday evening and Friday was very well received. It is always better to meet an officer on a social basis before you unfortunately meet that officer on a professional PATTY HINZ basis. Thanks John, not only for the idea but also for the participation. Office Assistant/Graphic Designer Finally, I want to highlight a campaign we launched at the convention. The cam- [email protected] paign is titled, “Project 600 Horsepower in 2015”. I hope that I have your curious attention; let me explain further. We all know that with larger membership we have greater political horsepower. Well, the SDTA is very close to setting a record for total membership. Therefore, during the convention we launched a campaign to reach that goal. Since we have over 550 members, it should not be difficult to find another (continued on page 13) 5 % Customer Focused Employee Owned 100% Committed to Keeping Your Trucks Rolling We’re all-in, all of the time. HOW TO FIND VIN DECODERS Jan. 07, 2009 This document contains the file names followed by motor vehicle manufacturer’s name for a great many of the VIN decoders received by NHTSA since the VIN regulations went into effect on October, 1980. It is not intended for amateur use, and as such is not equipped with the graphical user interfaces that main stream “www” consumer Internet sites are designed with. To use it, using your computer keyboard, hold “CONTROL” and tap “F” This action will bring up a query field. Only use one or two words of a manufacturer’s name when performing this search. It is best to use the second name of Chinese manufacturers as their first name may be a Province. Using the “find next” key stroke, go all the way through the document until you find (and record) every file name associated with your manufacturer. Manually type ftp://ftp.nhtsa.dot.gov/mfrmail or just click on this hyperlink. Hold “control” and tap “F” to display the search screen again allowing you to enter the previously discovered “file names.” Double clicking these file names brings up images of the manufacturer’s VIN decoders. NHTSA intends to revise these sites on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month: (1) ftp://ftp.nhtsa.dot.gov/mfrmail (2) ftp://ftp.nhtsa.dot.gov/manufacture (3) www.nhtsa.dot.gov.cars.rules.manufacture Page : 1 Monday May 22, 2006 Docket: 01-022N11-B Comment Date Date of Number Received Submitter/Firm/Subject Pages Document ======= ======= ================= ===== ======== 00001 04/17/1980 KEITH L.

2012 Vehicle Recalls by Manufacturer This analysis should not be interpreted as an indication of what NHTSA thinks of any particular manufacturer or its products. Since these summary numbers do not factor in or weight averages based on production, the largest OEMs tend to top the list each year. These tallies are not used to evaluate manufacturers or to evaluate which recalls the agency may need to investigate or monitor. There are a host of reasons why a manufacturer could have more or fewer recalls in a given year or over time – including, but not limited to, the introduction of new technology, its barometer for measuring risk, which could be more conservative or liberal as contrasted to other manufacturers or the industry as a whole, or other variables.
