Youth Christmas Eve Candlelight Service December 24, 2017 – 11:00 pm

“Broken Perfection… Lost Control … HOPE.”

Christmas is a time when we want perfection, probably more than any other time of year. When a loved one cannot make it home it is extra sad. When the meal does not turn out it is extra frustrating. When the present is not well received we feel extra bad. Things are supposed to be picture perfect at Christmas time. It is time to take control and bend the heavens and earth to your will. This Christmas, let us reflect on the very first Christmas and look at life. At the first Christmas, Christ did not shake the imperfection out of this World, but He did bring perfect hope. As ugly and painful as life can get, especially in this season of perfection, what does hope mean? How does it make all the difference? The Hope we find in Christ is not the “hope?” that a meal turns out well, or the “hope?” for a certain desired present. Hope in Christ permeates our whole life. Hope in Christ changes how we see the highs and lows of life because Christ has come to redeem all things. In Christian Hope our disappointments bear eternal fruit. In Christian Hope our hurts strengthen us. In Christian Hope our fear brings us closer to our Mighty Lord. In Christian Hope every ending is a new beginning. Merry Christmas, and may your gift this year be the Lord moving you from man’s “hope” that is a question, to Christian Hope that ends in a period as Christ declares, “It is accomplished”.

(*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the service.

OPENING PRAYER

HYMN “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear” ...... LSB 366

-1- (*) CHRISTMAS INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit C: Amen. P: At the time of His birth, Jesus was: praised by the angels, acclaimed by the shepherds, and in time, given gifts of honor from the wise men. But Christ was born into human flesh to die for the redemption of sinners. This night we give Jesus our praise, but we also give Him our sin. C: Dear Lord Jesus, we lay our sins before you. P: As you sing, listen. Listen to the full message of Christmas. Jesus born, Son of God, God’s love incarnate to die and rise for the forgiveness of sin. (Please be seated)

HYMN OF MEDITATION “From Heaven Above to Earth I Come” / “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” (Tune, LSB 425)

“To you this night is born a child of Mary, chosen virgin mild; (LSB 358, st. 2) This little child of lowly birth shall be the joy of all the earth.

“This is the Christ, our God Most High, who hears your sad and bitter cry; (LSB 358, st. 3) He will Himself your Savior be from all your sins to set you free.

See, from His head, His hands, His feet sorrow and love flow mingled down! (LSB 425, st. 3) Did e’er such love and sorrow meet or thorns compose so rich a crown?

(A time of silence)

P: As the first Christmas approached, the darkness was thick upon the earth. Into that darkness God spoke and the Word came to dwell with us! Jesus, the light of the world, has come! The darkness flees before His brilliance and as far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:12) As a called and ordained servant of Christ, by His authority, I speak His grace to you. You are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen!

P: Now, like the shepherds, let us praise the name of the Lord. For this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes! (Mark 12:11)

(Please stand to sing…)

-2- (*) RESPONSE (The Wonderful Cross) “He will on you the gifts bestow prepared by God for all below, That in His kingdom, bright and fair, You may with us His glory share.

O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross All who gather here by grace draw near and bless Your name.

Christmas Perfection: Announcer: Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Bing Crosby

Homecoming: Dad: I sure do love that song. … Sweetie, the house looks just perfect. You went all out this year. The kids are going to love it. Mom: I hope so. It has been so long. Grace has missed the last two Christmases with that new job of hers. Rox‐anne has been working so hard at college that we barely see her. At least we get to see Lizzie every once in a while, but to have all three home at the same time. It will be wonderful! Dad: I agree. It has been too long. You have outdone yourself this year. Mom: You’re not too upset that I asked you not to invite your parents? Dad: I’m not upset. I feel bad not having them with us, but you’re, right the house will be full and it is ok for us to focus on the kids. Lizzie will visit them on her way here and they will enjoy seeing us next weekend. For this Christmas, it’s just our family. It will be perfect. Plus, I know how well you and my mom get along… Mom: We see things a bit differently is all. I am not going to lie. It will be a less stressful day without her. The kids should be here soon! I am going to finish up in the kitchen, I want everything to be perfect! Lizzie: Daddy! Merry Christmas, dad! Dad: Merry Christ…. Lizzie. What have you done? Lizzie: Oh! I went to visit Grandma and Grandpa and there was a water main issue at their building. All the residents needed to be moved so I told the director that they could come with me and you would bring them back when the issue was fixed. They can spend Christmas with us! Grandpa: Are you two done or are you going to leave us out here until we sing carols for you? Can’t you see we can’t get our suitcases up these steps?! Lizzie: Sorry Grandpa. Grandma: What did she say? Why aren’t you moving your buns hon? Lizzie: I am coming to help, Grandma. Grandpa is stuck. He can’t lift the suitcases! -3- Grandpa: Why are you yelling at me?! Lizzie: I’m not yelling at you Grandpa. I am yelling at Grandma! I mean I am speaking up so she can hear me! Grandpa: Oh! That lady is deaf as a rock! Grandpa: Why are you hitting me! Grandma: I couldn’t hear what you said, but I know it was naughty! Mom: Sweetie, what is all the yelling about out… Dad: Sweetie, guess who is…. Lizzie: Merry Christmas, mom! Mom: Merry Christmas Lizzie…why are your grandparents here? Why do they have suitcases? Lizzie: A water main issue at their building. I said they could stay here until it’s fixed. Don’t worry, it will only be a week or so. Grandma: We hate to be an inconvenience for you. I know how you had your heart set on leaving us out of Christmas and all. We will try not to be a bother. My it’s cold, could you be a dear and turn up the thermostat? In my day, we kept the house warmer than the outside. A cup of coffee would be nice if you can manage. Lizzie, can you put these suitcases in your parent’s room. I don’t think your grandpa and I can make it down to the guest room. Mom: O…K I will go check the thermostat. Grandpa: What was that! Lizzie: I don’t know. Dad: Oh boy. Well, let’s get you guys settled Grandpa: Thank you Grandma: Oh good, but my hands are just too cold to hold the cup. Could you hold it a bit until I warm up? Mom: Sure Rox‐anne: Merry Christmas! Dad: whoa! Grandpa: Hello Rox‐anne! Grandma: What! Grandpa: Rox‐anne just arrived! Grandma: You’re pregnant! Well it looks like we are no longer the most surprising thing. Ok dear, I will take that coffee now. If you leave that on the carpet, it will stain. Oh well, suit yourself, but could you get me another cup of coffee, if you can manage.

HYMN “The Night Will Soon Be Ending” ...... LSB 337

-4- Perfect Deconstruction Mary: What a wonderful day. I wasn’t sure at first, but I think I can grow to love Joseph. We had such a nice talk today. He is a good man and will provide for me. I will not be an unmarried burden to my family. Life is perfect right now. Angel: Mary Mary: … Angel: Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. Mary: …. Angel: Do not be afraid, Mary. You have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and be the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His Father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; His kingdom will never end. Mary: …. Angel: … Mary…Mary did you hear me? It is pretty important that you hear what I have to say. Mary: “Favor with God”, with Child, a son, Son of Most high, throne, kingdom.” Angel: Oh Lord, I think I broke her… Mary, focus Mary Mary: How can this be? I am a virgin! Joseph is going to kill me. The town is going to stone me! Angel: Ok, let’s try this again. The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Mary: What does that even mean? Angel: Now I know why this was a short straw task. Mary! Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God. Mary: But….but everything was figured out perfectly! I was to marry Joseph, then we would have children and he would provide for me. Now he won’t want me! Angel: Mary, Mary! Don’t you see? Mary: See?! Don’t I see?! Yes, I see! My life is ruined! Angel: No! Mary don’t you see God Himself is with you. The Most High will provide for you. For both you and Joseph. Your life is not ruined; God is making all things new through your son, HIS Son. Mary: Is it going to be ok? Angel: I have been around for a long, long time and I have seen God do millions of amazing things. It will be better than ok. Place your trust in Him, Hope in the Lord. Mary: I am the Lord’s servant, may it be to me as you have said. Lord help me. Angel: Mary, the Lord will help you. I promise.

-5- SPECIAL MUSIC “Annunciation” and “Magnificat” ...... Holden

An Angel went from God to a town called Nazareth to a woman whose name was Mary. The angel said to her, “Rejoice, O highly favored, for God is with you. You shall bear a child, and His name shall be Jesus, the Chosen One of God most High.” And Mary said, “I am the servant of my God, I live to do Your will.”

My soul proclaims your greatness, O God, And my spirit rejoices in you, You have looked with love on your servant here, And blessed me all my life through. Great and mighty are you, O Holy One, Strong is your kindness evermore. How you favor the weak and lowly one, Humbling the proud of heart.

You have cast the mighty down from their thrones, And uplifted the humble of heart, You have filled the hungry with wondrous things, And left the wealthy no part. Great and Mighty are you, O Faithful One, Strong is your justice strong your love, As you promised to Sarah and Abraham, Kindness forevermore.

My soul proclaims your greatness, O God, And my spirit rejoices in you, You have looked with love on your servant here, And blessed me all my life through.

More of the Same Mom: Rox‐anne….is there something we should know? Grandpa: I think you’re going to have to wait for that coffee, want mine? Rox‐anne: Well, I got a haircut. Lizzie: You’re pregnant! Rox‐anne: I was hoping no one would notice. Mom: Why didn’t you tell us? When are you due? I am too young to be a grandparent….

-6- Rox‐anne: This is why I didn’t tell anyone. I know it is not ideal. I didn’t want to stress people out, but it has been a huge stress to me. The baby is due next month, but I don’t even know what I am going to do. It has been so hard. I thought I could take care of this on my own, but I am exhausted and ashamed and at the same time I love this child more than anything in the world and I have not even met him yet! And my feet hurt and my back hurts and I am hungry and uncomfortable and I have to go pee. Lizzie: She’s … pregnant. Wait did she say “him”? Is it going to be a boy? Grace: Sorry I’m late and I know you were not expecting me to have suitcases, but I just found out last night that my division has been shut down and I am out of work. I was hoping you would let me stay here while I look for work… What is going on here? Why are Grandma and Grandpa here? Grandpa: Everyone is kind of in shock due to the fact that your sister is pregnant. Grace: Wait, what! Grandma: It is ok honey. Everything is going to be just fine… Now be a dear and go refresh Grandma’s coffee, and watch out, your mom spilled my first cup of coffee over there. Thank you, dear. Grace: … Grandpa: Sorry to hear that you lost your job. Your grandma and I are staying here for the next few days and your pregnant sister will probably stay as well. You may be stuck on an air mattress. Things are going to be cozy! Grandma: With all the excitement, I hardly noticed all the nice decorations. The house sure is festive. Mom: Thank you Grandma: Did you hire someone to do it? Dad: Sweetie, lets go check on Rox‐anne. Slow deep breaths, remember what the doctor said.

Christmas Perfection?

Unbelievable Hope Joseph: It was all arranged and proper. I was a fool! I was blinded by love. I should have known that a man of my age would never be accepted by a young woman like Mary! I would have loved her, provided for her, given her the perfect life and she throws it all away for another! I don’t even know who it is. She won’t even tell me who it was. Some young handsome man I am sure. I should expose her sin! I should demand justice and let her reap the consequences of her scandal. If she would just tell me the truth. Instead she talks about angels and God as if it will remove her sin to attach her betrayal to God. I wish I had a name to be angry at. Curse me. I should expose her, but I can’t. I can’t do it. God help me I still love her. I will not ruin her. I will divorce her quietly. I will do all I can to protect her. What fool am I. -7- Angel: Joseph! Joseph: ! Angel: Oh bother. Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. These are the Words of the Lord, now you have heard. Joseph: Could it be? Did Mary tell me the unbelievable truth? Jesus…God Saves. God I will do as you ask. I will be attached to her shame, but how can this child save us from sin? We have sacrifices for that. What great sacrifice will he have to give?

HYMN “The Unbelievable” ...... Sovereign Grace Music

Come and see the inconceivable And believe the unbelievable God has come to dwell with us Begotten Son born into Adam’s earth Promised One fulfilling ancient words God has come to dwell with us

Chorus Who could ever know the depths Of the myst’ry of Your grace? Though our minds can’t take it in Lord, our hearts are filled with praise

He will heal the unhealable He will save the unsavable God has come to dwell with us Heaven’s joy will drink our bitter cup Emptied out as He is lifted up God has come to dwell with us

Chorus

Lord, we’re lost in overwhelming awe At the thought of such amazing love God has come, God has come God has come to dwell with us

Out of Control Dad: Well, I’ll just say what we are all thinking. This is not the best Christmas we have had. Grandma: You can say that again! You can’t even get a cup of coffee in this place!

-8- Dad: Ma, you are not helping. Mom: Now what! Logan: Ma’am, I am sorry to bother you but it is cold and … Mom: Oh come on in, why not! Logan: Excuse me? Mom: Come on in, have a seat, and close the door, it’s cold outside! Dad: Dear…. You just let a homeless man in our house. Mom: Yes, I did. It seemed fitting. Nothing else is as we expected. The more disasters the better. What’s your name Homeless guy? Can I get you some coffee? Ma, I am sure you want more coffee, how about three coffees for the couch! Logan: Coffee would be great! Mom: Here you go! Everyone comfortable? Grandma: Actually …. Mom: I am not talking to you. I didn’t catch your name Homeless man Logan: My name is Logan. Thanks for asking. I feel like I may have ended up somewhere more uncomfortable than the Minnesota winter… Mom: Nonsense! We are all comfortable here, aren’t we everybody? Grandma: Actually… Everyone: Grandma! Dad: This day has taken a few turns. She was just hoping for a perfect family Christmas and well… Lizzie: I brought unannounced guests. Grandma: That’s us. We are the unannounced and unwelcomed guests. Now there is a couch full. Rox‐anne: I came home and surprised them with this. Logan: Congratulations! Rox‐anne: Thank you. Grace: I came home jobless, had to give up my home and it’s like no one cares. Logan: Sounds more like a country song than a Hallmark movie that’s for sure. I have to say I am sorry to hear of all of your troubles, but I am also a bit thankful. As you guys reached your wits end you let me in. I can sort of feel my feet again and my belly is warm from this nice coffee. I can tell I am making some of you uncomfortable, but can I tell you my view of this situation?

SPECIAL MUSIC “Love Devine” ...... Rend Collective (LSB 700)

Foundation of Hope Logan: When I look at you guys I see someone who has to take on a new adventure forced to set aside a job and a home to seek something better. -9- Joseph: Oh Mary, I am so sorry. I should have a place for you to rest. You deserve so much better. Lord help! Mary: God will provide Joseph. You keep telling me that.

Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heav’n, to earth come down! (LSB 700, st. 1) Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, All Thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy salvation, Enter ev’ry trembling heart.

Logan: I see someone who has welcomed people in search of a home, and you welcomed them with joy. Joseph: Thank you! Thank you! We will take anything! They said we could stay in the barn. The house is full. They wish they could do more, but there is fresh hay and it is warm. Mary: Praise God! Help me Joseph.

Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit into ev’ry troubled breast; (LSB 700, st. 2) Let us all in Thee inherit; Let us find Thy promised rest. Take away the love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be; End of faith, as its beginning, Set our hearts at liberty.

Logan: I see a young woman in a tough situation, but God has placed her in a family that can help. Who knows what God has in store for this precious child! Mary: Joseph, it’s time! Is it going to be ok? Is everything going to be ok? Joseph: I don’t know Mary. I wish I could tell you everything will be fine, but I don’t have any control. I know that now, but God has taken care of us this far, I think He is in it till the end. Mary: It hurts Joseph! Joseph: I know, I wish I could take the pain away.

Come, Almighty, to deliver; Let us all Thy life receive; (LSB 700, st. 3) Suddenly return, and never, Nevermore Thy temples leave. May we be a blessing to Thee serve Thee as Thy hosts above, Pray and praise Thee without ceasing, Glory in Thy perfect love.

Logan: I know you are all hurting. I wish I could take your pain away, but I have come to learn that pain is not ours to take. The more we try to take control the more it hurts. I am in a bad place right now, I guess we all are, but there is an answer. I have to have hope. And what hope I got I put in the Lord. Mary: Joseph!? Joseph: He’s beautiful, Mary. Jesus is beautiful. Mary, I think everything will be ok. -10- Finish then Thy new creation, Pure and spotless let us be; (LSB 700, st. 4) Let us see Thy great salvation Perfectly restored in Thee, Changed from glory into glory, Till in heav’n we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise!

We invite those who acknowledge their sinfulness, recognize that Christ’s body and blood are truly present for our forgiveness, and are willing to give witness to the unity of their faith with this community, to join with us in receiving the sacrament. For those who for health or conscience reasons are not able to receive wine, please note that there is a cup of white grape juice in the middle of each tray. Gluten-free wafers are available in the middle of the bread tray for those with that allergy. CHILDREN are always welcome at Redeemer. Parents should note that according to your needs and preferences, 1) children’s bulletins and “color bags” are available in the narthex; 2) our nursery is staffed each Sunday morning during the 9:20 am Education Hour and the 10:40 am service. The Nursery is located just off the Narthex -- look for our sign! WORSHIP TAPES are available in the rack by the elevator. Listen and bring it back or contribute one dollar if you wish to keep the tape. TRANSPORTATION is available each Sunday morning. Please call the church office (289-5147) by Noon on Thursday. SPECIAL NEEDS Large print bulletins and personal hearing devices are available in the Narthex from an Usher or at the Welcome Center. OFFICE HOURS Monday through Friday 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
