C.Caswell); published May 16, 1917; $1.50; three copies, two with the stunning dust jacket, now almost exotic in its rarity, with the front flap reading: “Just as THE HARBOR was the story of a constantly changing life out upon the fringe of the city, along its wharves, among its ships, so the story of Roger Gale’s family pictures the growth of a generation out of the embers of the old in the ceaselessly changing heart of New York. Landmarks Preservation Commission December 15, 1987; Designation List 198 LP-1378 SHUBERT THEATER, 221-233 West 44th Street, Manhattan. Built 1912-13; architect, Henry B. Herts. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1016, Lot 15 in part consisting of the land on which the described building is situated. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a pub 1 ic hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Shubert Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 74). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-one witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many 1 etters and other express ions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Shubert Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in 1912-13, shortly before World War I, to the designs of Henry B. Herts, the Shubert was one of a pair with the Booth, and was among the numerous theaters constructed by the Shuberts, one of the most active and influential families in American theater history. The Shubert was built as a memorial to Sam S. Shubert, leader of the family's theatrical enterprises until his untimely death in a train wreck. -

Musical Theatre Scene Study: Semester 1 School of Theatre: High School 2018-2019 Tuesday Periods 7 and 8, Thursday Period 7 Room 306 Ms. Potter Email: [email protected] classroom.google.com add code: pka7peh Message Phone: 510-873-8800 The Course: Course Learning Goal: The goal of this class is to explore the theatrical genre of musical theatre through examination of material and develop performance practices with regards to acting in a musical. This year we will also develop our skills as actors in plays and scenes outside the musical theatre repertoire. This year we will explore the history of the genre through specific examples of books and scores from influential musicals from the beginning of the Golden Ages of Broadway in the 1950’s to next generation of musical creators who begin to push the genre in a new direction, often referred to as “concept musicals”. Through a close examination of specific shows you will gain an in depth knowledge of the acting theories required to effectively perform in the swiftly changing genre and an understanding of how the difference in acting style correspond to American history at the time. You will also gain practical knowledge of musical theatre performance by directing, choreographing, and performing scenes from this period’s musical theatre repertoire along with acting theory that supports performance in straight plays from the mid twentieth century including Tennessee Williams. Expectations: Students are expected to be prepared to work when class begins, which includes being dressed and having all of their needed materials for class for that day. -

For information on our current production, and on other shows we have presented, please visit our web site at http://SummitPlayhouse.org The Summit Playhouse Association Established 1918 10 New England Ave Summit, NJ 07974 908–273–2192 ����������������������������������������� Director’s Note When I was just a kid in Brooklyn, I remember my parents talking about how proud they were of their “paesano,” Fiorello H. LaGuardia, the mayor of New York City. How he helped the immigrants. How he fought and won his battle with the corrupt, unscrupulous Tammany Hall. How the three-term “Little Flower” became the most beloved mayor of one of the world’s greatest cities. How he could have gone even higher in politics had he not succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 60. Fast forward to 1960 and to a singer and lover of anything I could hum. Hearing such wonderful songs from this Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway mu- sical that had just copped six Tony Awards was to bring back sweet memo- ries of a time gone by. Fast forward even further and here I am having the opportunity to direct Fiorello! It didn’t matter that it encompassed “a cast of thousands” and close to two dozen set changes to be done on a postage-size stage. It was, for me, a dream come true. Now it is said that 80% of the success of a show can be credited to the director’s selection of the cast and the selection of a very talented cre- ative team of the musical director and choreographer. -
