Tokyo, Japan, April 1, 2017 – Bandai Visual Co., Ltd., a leader in the development and production of Japanese animation, announced today at Anime Boston, the largest anime convention in the Northeast United States, that the newest project of the Eureka Seven franchise is now under production. This new project, in conjunction with animation studio BONES, is the 3-part movie entitled “Eureka Seven: Hi-Evolution” It has been almost 12 years since the original TV series came out. The new movie will capture the story of Eureka and Renton. At Anime Boston, Chief Producer Masahiko Minami of the project (also the President of animation studio BONES), announced that Part 1 of the trilogy will be released in theaters this coming fall 2017 in Japan. Part 2 and Part 3 will be released in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Overseas releases in territories such as US, Australia, UK, France, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are also planned. Also during the panel, Minami showed new setting and character art featuring Hammer Head, Devil Fish, Eureka, Adrock, and Nirvash. Further details regarding “Eureka Seven: Hi Evolution” will be announced shortly. Story Ten years ago, the major earth-shaking “First Summer of Love” event occurred. Renton, who lost his father during the event, now attends the army school of the United Federation of Predgio Towers located in the border town of Bellforest. Because his late father is still praised, Renton feels something is lacking as he continues with his ordinary, boring days. Then one day, Nirvash, the world’s oldest LFO, appears in front of him and a girl named Eureka emerges from the cockpit. This was the beginning of the future of humans and Scub Coral, another intelligent lifeform. Masahiko Minami at Anime Boston Was this encounter all just a coincidence? Or was it fate? Where will Renton and Eureka’s journey end? About Bandai Visual Co., Ltd. The article examines the various laws, includ- ing copyright, sui generis, right of publicity and trademark, that may be employed to prevent the creation, duplication and exploitation of digital replicas of individuals as well as to prevent unauthorized alteration of ex- isting images of a person. With respect to totally imaginary digital hu- mans, the article addresses the issue of whether such virtual humans should be treated like real humans or simply as highly sophisticated forms of animated cartoon characters. • The First Dsungaripterid Pterosaur from the Kimmeridgian of Germany and the Biomechanics of Pterosaur Long Bones
The first dsungaripterid pterosaur from the Kimmeridgian of Germany and the biomechanics of pterosaur long bones MICHAEL FASTNACHT Fastnacht, M. 2005. The first dsungaripterid pterosaur from the Kimmeridgian of Germany and the biomechanics of pterosaur long bones. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 50 (2): 273–288. A partial vertebral column, pelvis and femora of a newly discovered pterosaur are described. The remains from the Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian) of Oker (northern Germany) can be identified as belonging to the Dsungaripteridae because the cross−sections of the bones have relatively thick walls. The close resemblance in morphology to the Lower Cretaceous Dsungaripterus allows identification of the specimen as the first and oldest record of dsungaripterids in Central Europe. Fur− thermore, it is the oldest certain record of a dsungaripterid pterosaur world wide. The biomechanical characteristics of the dsungaripterid long bone construction shows that it has less resistance against bending and torsion than in non−dsungari− pteroid pterosaurs, but has greater strength against compression and local buckling. This supports former suggestions that dsungaripterids inhabited continental areas that required an active way of life including frequent take−off and landing phases. The reconstruction of the lever arms of the pelvic musculature and the mobility of the femur indicates a quadrupedal terrestrial locomotion. Key words: Reptilia, Pterosauria, Dsungaripteridae, locomotion, biomechanics, Jurassic, Germany. Michael Fastnacht [fastnach@uni−mainz.de], Palaeontologie, Institut für Geowissenschaften, Johannes Gutenberg− Universität, D−55099 Mainz, Germany. • Animated Dialogues, 2007 29
Animation Studies – Animated Dialogues, 2007 Michael Broderick Superflat Eschatology Renewal and Religion in anime “For at least some of the Superflat people [...] there is a kind of traumatic solipsism, even an apocalyptic one, that underlies the contemporary art world as they see it.” THOMAS LOOSER, 2006 “Perhaps one of the most striking features of anime is its fascination with the theme of apocalypse.” SUSAN NAPIER, 2005 “For Murakami, images of nuclear destruction that abound in anime (or in a lineage of anime), together with the monsters born of atomic radiation (Godzilla), express the experience of a generation of Japanese men of being little boys in relation to American power.” THOMAS LAMARRE, 2006 As anime scholar Susan Napier and critics Looser and Lamarre suggest, apocalypse is a major thematic predisposition of this genre, both as a mode of national cinema and as contemporary art practice. Many commentators (e.g. Helen McCarthy, Antonia Levi) on anime have foregrounded the ‘apocalyptic’ nature of Japanese animation, often uncritically, deploying the term to connote annihilation, chaos and mass destruction, or a nihilistic aesthetic expression. But which apocalypse is being invoked here? The linear, monotheistic apocalypse of Islam, Judaism, Zoroastra or Christianity (with it’s premillennial and postmillennial schools)? Do they encompass the cyclical eschatologies of Buddhism or Shinto or Confucianism? Or are they cultural hybrids combining multiple narratives of finitude? To date, Susan Napier’s work (2005, 2007) is the most sophisticated examination of the trans- cultural manifestation of the Judeo-Christian theological and narrative tradition in anime, yet even her framing remains limited by discounting a number of trajectories apocalypse dictates.1 However, there are other possibilities.
