This text was compiled on 09/22/2021 1.1: Lab 1- Anatomical Language Measurable Outcomes Understand what the standard anatomical position is. Correctly identify a given plane by its correct name. Relate different structures of the body using the directional terms provided. Correctly identify the anatomical regions of the body. Demonstrate how to properly focus histology slides and identify key structures. Demonstrate an adequate understand of the material in this section. Background A solid foundation is essential when learning any new skill. Understanding anatomical directions, articulations, planes, and regions are the foundation for learning anatomy. The standard anatomical position of the human body is facing towards the observer, legs hip-width apart, feet facing forward, arms out slightly at either side with palms facing forward. When determining a structure’s relative position, be sure to use this frame of reference. For example, it can be easy to confuse which side is the anterior aspect of the hands, therefore, one might incorrectly assume that the thumb is medial to the little finger. Remember, the anterior aspect of the hand is the palm, therefore the thumb is furthest from the center of the body and is lateral. The archetypal body planes are frontal, sagittal and transverse planes. The frontal plane splits the body into anterior and posterior halves.

CAVERNOUS SINUSES Diagram of the cavernous sinus The cavernous sinus, a large venous plexus, is located on each side of the sella turcica on the upper surface of the body of the sphenoid, which contains the sphenoid (air) sinus. They are enclosed by the endosteal and meningeal layers of the dura mater. The borders of the cavernous sinus are: i) Superior Orbital fissure anteriorly. ii) The Petrous part of the temporal bone posteriorly. iii) The body of sphenoid medially. iv) The meningeal layer of the dura mater running from the roof of the middle cranial fossa, laterally. v) The roof is formed by the meningeal layer of the dura mater that attaches to the anterior and middle clinoid processes of the sphenoid bone. vi) The floor is formed by the endosteal layer of the dura mater that overlies the base of the greater wing of sphenoid bone. The cavernous sinuses receive blood not only from cerebral veins, but also from the ophthalmic veins (from the orbit) and emissary veins (from the pterygoid plexus of veins in the infratemporal fossa). These connections provide pathways for infections to pass from extracranial sites into intracranial locations. In addition, because structures pass through the cavernous sinuses and are located in the walls of these sinuses they are vulnerable to injury due to inflammation.

In order to gain further insight into the underlying molecular mechanisms of OR regulation, a bifurcate proteomic strategy was employed. Firstly, the question of stimulus induced plasticity of the olfactory sensory neuron was addressed. Juvenile mice were exposed to either a pulsed or continuous application of an aldehyde odorant, octanal, for 20 days. This was followed by behavioural, electrophysiological and proteomic investigations. Both treated groups displayed peripheral desensitization to octanal as determined by electro-olfactogram recordings. This was not due to anosmia as they were on average faster than the control group in a behavioural food discovery task. To elucidate differentially regulated proteins between the control and treated mice, fluorescent Difference Gel Electrophoresis (DIGE) was used. Seven significantly up-regulated and ten significantly down-regulated gel spots were identified in the continuously treated mice; four and twenty-four significantly up- and down-regulated spots were identified for the pulsed mice, respectively. The spots were excised and proteins were identified using mass spectrometry. Several promising candidate proteins were identified including potential transcription factors, cytoskeletal proteins as well as calcium binding and odorant binding proteins.

They are spindle –shaped bipolar neurons with rounded nuclei in the middle wide region .they are ectodermal in origin. Dendrine of an olfactory cell extends to the surface of the epithelium where it enlarges into an olfactory vesicle which bears a few (5 to12) shorts nonmotile cilia or olfactory hair,each about 2 micrometer long .the no. of olfactory here varies with the species. The olfactory vesicle contains tiny granules, one at base of each cilium, looking like the basal bodies in the ciliated cells. The unmyelinated axons start from the opposite end of the olfactory cell, from the olfactory nerves which make a direct contact with the olfactory bulb of the brain, from here, bundles of nerves fibers extended via olfactory tract to the smell center in the cerebral cortex. The olfactory cells serving as sensory receptors as well as conducting neuron. The neuron carries the impulse directly to the brain without the need of other nerve cells called nerve fibers to relay the impulse. 2) Supporting cells. These are columnar cells with oval nuclei they lie between the olfactory cell to support them.
