From Sarkozy’s ‘Anti-Repentance’ to Macron’s ‘Crisis of Acceptance’ Giorgos Noussis National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, GR [email protected] For the first time in post-war history, the French State acknowledged in 2018 the use of military torture during the Algerian War of Independence, through the statement of the French president, Emmanuel Macron. The declaration was inscribed in the context of the Franco-Algerian War, attempting to restore and vindicate the memory of Maurice Audin, a victim of the French colonial system established in Algeria. The article deals with the postcolonial memory of the Algerian War of Independence in French public sphere, focusing on the politics of memory of the presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and Emmanuel Macron. Exploring the uses of the colonial past in French politics, I seek to delineate the process of ‘coming to terms’ with ‘colonial legacy’ and to trace the transformations that the ‘modes’ of remembering have undergone in France over the last few decades. Over the last few decades, the notion of ‘coming to terms with the past’ (associated since the 1980s with a mode of cosmopolitan memory in favour of social consensus, reconcilia- tion, transitional justice and human rights) has undergone radical changes. The cosmopolitan mode of remembering emphasizes human suffering in past atrocities and is characterized by reflexivity, regret and mourning, in contrast to the antagonistic mode which provides a Manichean division of good and evil, reliant on glorifying or nostalgic narratives (Bull & Hansen 390). -

“What ‘I’ Cannot Say: Testifying of Trauma through Translation” Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Heidi Brown, M.A. Graduate Program in French and Italian The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jennifer Willging, Advisor Danielle Marx-Scouras Maurice Stevens Cheikh Thiam Copyright by Heidi Brown 2014 Abstract This dissertation proposes a new theory of translation to explain how trauma testimony is performed by survivors who have experienced a death of their selves. It shows that certain 20th century French and Francophone authors translate their voices across languages, literary genres, and bodies (both human and animal) in order to testify of trauma when they are no longer able to bear witness in the first-person. The two French works studied—Journal (2008) by Hélène Berr and La Douleur [The War] (1985) by Marguerite Duras—exhibit translations by the authors to different subject- positions within themselves. Berr translates across languages to negotiate between different socio-linguistically constructed identities and cites English literature to speak in her stead when she is no longer able to voice her experiences. On the other hand, Duras translates across different literary genres (autobiography, auto-fiction, and fiction) in order to recreate a sense of self and increase her capacity for emotional expression. The two Francophone works studied—Djamila Boupacha (1962) by Simone de Beauvoir and Gisèle Halimi and Le passé devant soi [The Past Ahead] (2008) by Gilbert Gatore—exhibit translation movements across bodies. Djamila Boupacha translates her voice to Gisèle Halimi, her Tunisian-French lawyer, and to Simone de Beauvoir, a French feminist author, in order to testify of the torture she endured during the Algerian War. -

Moving between Algeria and France in my analyses and considering documents from the period in question and from later years that reflect back on it, I analyze literary works, films, memoirs, and a legal case in order to consider how physical violence and trauma produce a variety of forms of psychological and corporeal dissonance and how the repression of personal and collective memories can impact bodies and minds both destructively and productively. An investigation of the workings of the social constructs of gender and sexuality is at the center of this project, and I consistently take an approach that actively engages feminist theoretical perspectives, while also taking into account how other categories like race, class, ethnicity, nationality, and citizenship intersect with gender and sexuality to structure our understanding of embodiment and memory during the French-Algerian War. -

Fictional depictions of limit experiences such as torture are deeply rooted in discourses about remembering and forgetting. I argue that the frequently used term “open secret” is a misnomer which is taken up in literature in order to be critiqued through narrative fragmentation and shifting generic frames. My project is interdisciplinary, and studies literary and anthropological discussions of torture as both a politicized and sexualized system. I address the problem of representing torture and raise questions about the status of historiography and its place within French, Algerian, and trans-Mediterranean discourses. My first chapter, “Histories repeating,” examines how and why fictional accounts of torture and its aftermath tend to deliberately conflate and intertwine various historical periods. Making individual memories of physical violence the subject of fiction, the authors I discuss narrativize the historical reality of torture in order to illustrate the longue durée and endless repeatability of violence. -

Review by Kim Munholland, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. “Why republish, indeed, why read a book about a journalist who was tortured by French soldiers during the Algerian revolution of the 1950s?” This is the opening question that Ellen Ray poses in her foreword to a new edition of a classic of anti-colonial, prison literature, written nearly fifty years ago, that has immediacy for today’s conflict in Iraq (p. vii). Ellen Ray’s foreword, James D. Le Sueur’s introduction, which provides the historical context and significance of the book’s publication, and a thoughtful afterword by Henri Alleg all connect past and present. The University of Nebraska Press is to be commended for bringing out this classic at a time when testimony from the past has something to offer to current debates over the Iraq war. It also contributes to the ongoing reexamination of what the war and its memory has meant for French society. Jean-Paul Sartre’s “A Victory,” the powerful preface to the original edition was an integral part of The Question’s impact in shaping French intellectuals’ opposition to the war in the late 1950s and 1960s. What follows is less a review of the book than a consideration of its significance: as an event in French history and memory of the Algerian War and as a comment upon the continued practices of torture in the context of American military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. -

In truth, not everything that wars have destroyed, created, ravaged, and desecrated comes to an end when they are over. Among the many remains, wreckage and legacies that WHEN NOT EVEN THE DEAD SEE THE END OF A WAR wars leave, and which inevitably contaminate several subsequent generations, sometimes even the dead see no end. Maurice Audin is an example. He was arrested and reported missing in June 1957, in the middle of the ‘Battle of Algiers’. Last September, the French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged on behalf of the French Republic that Audin was tortured and executed – or tortured to death – by French soldiers who had arrested him at his home. According to Macron, this acknowledgement “should open the way to a better understanding of our past, to a greater clarity concerning the wounds of our history, and to a new will to reconcile the memories of the French and Algerian peoples”. Hopefully, all of this will happen, and quickly. For now, this recognition opens a new front in the war of memories between the many protagonists who experienced the French colonial presence in Algeria, as well as those who, even though they didn’t live through it, enter the fray as heirs of that past.
