ORDINATION IN JAPAN The Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of OLSC, Monsignor Harry Entwistle, asks for our prayers for Deacon Joseph Paul Yamaoka who is to be ordained to the priesthood for ministry in the Community of St Laurence of Canterbury, an Ordinariate Community of OLSC in Hiroshima, Japan. The Ordination will take place on the Feast of St John the Baptist, June 24th by His Excellency the Archbishop Chennoth, the Apostolic Nuncio in Japan, in the chapel of the Nunciature. Monsignor Entwistle, the Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of OLSC will present the candidate for ordination. Monsignor Entwistle said: “This will be a cause for great celebration and I will be joined by Fr Kajiwara and lay members of the Ordinariate communities in Japan.” _________________________________________________________________________________ From our Ordinary: Monsignor Harry Entwistle, P A Having just celebrated the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, we are now in the long season of Trinity when the Church asks us to study one of the first three Gospels and understand what emphasis the author places on aspects of Jesus’ life and ministry. This year the Gospel is that of St Luke. St Luke’s Gospel focusses on those who are considered to be ‘outsiders’ by the leadership of the Jewish people but who were welcomed by Jesus. He begins his gospel narrative by telling us that the good news of Christ’s birth was announced to shepherds, a group who were very much ‘outsiders’ in the Jewish religious community. He ends his Gospel with the announcement of the good news of the resurrection of Jesus to women, who were considered unreliable witnesses in the Jewish legal system. Jesus is presented by Luke as the light to lighten the Gentiles as well as being the glory of God’s peo- ple, Israel. Luke records the healing of Gentiles (Centurion’s servant) as well as the sinner and the outcast. Much of Jesus’ teaching in this gospel is about Jesus restoring those whose lives do not con- form to the values of God’s Kingdom being restored through forgiveness and the demand for an amendment of their life. His message is that we must not exclude those outside the Church who are looking to build a relationship with God. Nor must we make it unnecessarily difficult for those within the Church whose lives do not conform to the standards that God lays before us, but want to understand the Church’s teaching and embrace it. This is precisely what Pope Francis is urging us to do in Amoris Laetitia. The teaching of the Church cannot be changed by the Pope, but he can urge us to apply that teaching with a warm compassion rather than cold legalism. This is the teaching we are given in Scripture and as Catholic Christians we must communicate this teaching to our society and the world. This is particularly true during a pre- election period as we consider who we will vote for. In our current era in Australia and the Western world, Catholicism is under intense pressure because it is the least secularised of the major Christian denominations. The intention of those who are anti- Catholic is to eradicate the Church, and if that is not possible, to secularise it and force it to exist as a purely private aberration. In times of persecution and conflict, it is vital that the Church preaches the gospel and the Church’s understanding of the ramifications of that gospel, more boldly than ever. St Luke presents us with a Jesus who condemns those who worship false gods, particularly the god of financial greed. It is not money, but the love of money that is the root of all evils (1 Tim 6:10). A nation’s economy must be healthy to serve the people. It is when the economy is treated as a god that the people are sacrificed to serve its ends. St Luke presents a Jesus who condemns those who worship creation by claiming to be environmentalists yet deny the creator, and are determined to destroy the pro-life thrust of God’s creation and its social and moral order. It was on this Scriptural truth that Archbishop Anthony Fisher condemned the social engineering policies of the Greens in his Corpus Christi sermon (The Australian, 30 May 2016). [Continued next page] 2 3. From our Ordinary: Continued No major political party is likely to base all its policies on Christian teaching, but as we Catholics make our decisions on how we will vote, we must look for balance and choose that party (as opposed to an individual party leader) whose policies have more Christian balance than the others. What we must never do is waste our vote, for that is a denial of our God given freedom of choice and speech. Blessings, Rev Monsignor Harry Entwistle: Ordinary. 31 May 2016 _________________________________________________________________________________ THE ORDINARY’S DIARY June 7th– 21st Parish duties at the Ordinariate parish of St Ninian and St Chad, Maylands, Perth. Ken Clark, the Ordinariate Parish Priest centred at Maffra, and Fr Prasanna Costa, assistant priest in Traralgon, each delivered a talk on Our Lady, Mother of Mercy, and concelebrated Mass according to the Ordinariate rite. The rest of the day consisted of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction; a time for Confessions, the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Litany of Our Lady, and the Crowning of the statue of Our Lady. Lunch time provided a great opportunity to meet and enjoy one another’s company, especially as many who come to the Marian Day come from across the whole diocese and don’t get to meet each other except at such gatherings. Thanks to Pat Crozier for organising the day, and for John and Judy Cooney who always ensure the hall is well prepared to host such events. The annual Marian Day will be held in Cowwarr in future, on the Saturday closest to the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima (13th May). Next year, 2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of Fatima, so the Marian Day will be extra special. Everybody will be made welcome so come and join us for another great day of prayer, worship and fellowship.
