HAMILTON (Under the Direction of John Weaver) ABSTRACT This study examines the various stereotypes that persist about the American South, giving consideration to the common stereotypes, their persistence, and the response of Southerners and non-Southerners to them. Further, it aims to examine in-depth the methods by which these stereotypes are perpetuated, such as literature, movies, television, and music. Within this dissertation, pieces of literature by traditional Southern authors, like William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams, are examined for the images they employ. Further, films such as Deliverance and Sweet Home Alabama, as well as television shows like The Dukes of Hazzard and The Beverly Hillbillies are analyzed for how they convey stereotypes about the South.

"People either inspire you, or they drain you. Pick them wisely." - Hans F. Hansen Monday, November 11, 2019 Printable Copy or Audio Version Morning Summary: Stocks are coming off their fifth straight week of gains as third- quarter earnings season begins to wind down. Close to 90% of S&P 500 companies have now reported results with approximately 75% topping analyst expectations. Earnings for S&P 500 companies are now on track to decline -2.4%, improving from a decline of -2.8% at the start of last week. Bulls are also pointing to the correction in the yield curve, with all longer-term debt again now yielding more than short-dated for the first time since November 2018. If you recall, the yield curve inversion was raising serious alarms about a looming recession this past summer, that has since subsided. As for Chinese trade headlines, we continue to digest mixed messages with President Trump now saying he has not agreed to suspend tariffs on Chinese goods, countering news reports last week that suggested a rollback was part of the "Phase 1" trade deal.

I He's already funny n ; According to reports, Andy Griffith says he appreciates the interest but has no intention of runningfor the U.S. Senate from his home state of North Carolina. This qualifies as real news, since I had no idea there was any interest in Andy Griffith running for the U.S. Senate. But,come to think of it, why not? Fred Gandy, better known as Gopher from The Love Boat, is a congressman now. I think ^ome guy from The Dukes of Hazzard is, too, proof that the entrance requirement isn't too steep. And Ange has that easy-going, even-handed touch. He'd probably sit around on the steps of the Capitol, strumming his guitar and singing, "You get a line, and I'll get a pole, hoAey..." Then he'd amble in and vote to make going over to the fillin' station for a bottle of pop the national pastime. He'd have a great nickname, too; Senator Without a Gun. And what a staff he could as semble. Barney to the rescue Of course Andy would need a top aide, and who would be better qualified than Barney Fife?
