In a penalty shoot-out, each team takes turns shooting at goal from the penalty mark, with the goal only defended by the opposing team's goalkeeper. Each Soccer Shootout has five shots which must be taken by different kickers; the team that makes more successful kicks is declared the victor. Shoot-outs finish as soon as one team has an insurmountable Soccer Shootout. If scores are level after five pairs of shots, the shootout progresses into Soccer Shootout "sudden-death" rounds. Although the procedure for Soccer Shootout individual kick in the shoot-out resembles that of a penalty kickthere are some differences. Most notably, neither the kicker nor any player other than the goalkeeper may play the ball again once it has been kicked. The penalty shoot-out is one of the three methods of breaking a draw that are currently approved by Soccer Shootout Laws of the Game ; the others are extra time and, for two-legged tiesthe away goals rule. The method of breaking a draw for a specific match is determined beforehand by the match organising body. In most professional level competitions, two minute extra time periods are played if the score is tied at the end of regulation time, and a shoot-out is held if the score is still tied after the extra time periods. Although widely employed in football since the s, penalty shoot-outs have been widely criticised by many followers of the game, due primarily to their perceived reliance on luck rather than skill and their dependence on individual duels between opposing players, which is arguably not in keeping with football as a team sport. During a shoot-out, players other than the kicker and the goalkeepers must remain in the centre circle. Goals scored during the shoot-out are not commonly added to the goalscoring records of the players involved. A draw is a common result in football. Shoot-outs are only used in competitions that require a match-winner at the end of the game [1] — this is predominantly in knockout "cup" tiesas opposed to round-robin "leagues" ; they decide which team progresses to the next round of a tournament, or win it. The rules of some competitions Soccer Shootout that a shoot-out may be used to decide placings in a round-robin group, in the unusual event that two teams who have faced each other in a final-day match finish the group with identical statistics, and no other teams has the same Soccer Shootout. Several leagues, such as the J. League[7] have experimented with penalty shoot-outs immediately following a drawn league match, with the winner being awarded an extra point. In the United States and Canada, Major League Soccer initially also had a shoot-out immediately following the end of full-time, even during league matches, although these shoot-outs differed from standard penalty shoot-outs see below. A team that loses a penalty shoot-out is Soccer Shootout from the tournament while the winning team in the shoot-out advances to the next round but the match is classed as a draw. For instance, the Netherlands are considered to have concluded the Soccer Shootout World Cup undefeated, despite being eliminated at the semi-final stage. The following is a summary of the Soccer Shootout for kicks from the penalty mark. Defending against a penalty kick is one Soccer Shootout the most difficult tasks a goalkeeper can face. Some decide which way they will dive beforehand, giving themselves time to reach the side of the goalmouth. Kickers may attempt to feint, Soccer Shootout delay their shot Soccer Shootout see which way the keeper dives. Shooting high and centre, in the space that the keeper will evacuate, carries the highest risk of shooting above the bar. Since the entire shoot-out is conducted Soccer Shootout the same goal, the crowd behind the goal may favour one team and try to distract the other team's shooters. To forestall any potential advantage, in the Laws of the Game were modified to add a coin toss between the two teams prior to the shoot-out: the winner of the coin toss has the right to decide which goal is used for the shoot-out previously, the decision was at the referee's discretion. The referee may change the goal only for safety reasons or if the selected goal or pitch are unusable. A goalkeeper may not use distracting gamesmanship such as cleaning his boots or asking the referee to see if the ball is placed properly; this risks a caution for unsporting conduct. Before Soccer Shootout introduction of shoot-outs, knock-out matches level after extra time would be decided by a replay or a coin toss. However, variants of the modern shoot-out were used before then in several domestic competitions and minor tournaments. Domestic examples include the Yugoslav Cup from[15] the Coppa Italia from —59, [16] and the Swiss inter-regional Youth Cup from — In major competitions, when a replay or playoff was not possible, Soccer Shootout were previously broken by drawing of lots. Examples include Italy 's win over the USSR in the semi-final of the European Championship the final, Soccer Shootout drawn, went to a replay. Israeli Yosef Dagan is credited with originating the modern shoot-out, [24] after watching the Israeli team lose Soccer Shootout Olympic quarterfinal game against Bulgaria by drawing of lots in Mexico. In England, the first penalty Soccer Shootout in a professional match took place in at Boothferry ParkHullbetween Hull City and Manchester United during the semi-final of the Watney Cupand was won by Manchester United. The first player to take a kick was George Bestand the first to miss was Denis Law. Ian McKechniewho Soccer Shootout Law's kick, was also the first goalkeeper to take a kick; his shot hit the crossbar and deflected over, putting Hull City out of the Cup. Five weeks later, on 4 November[30] the first ever Soccer Shootout Cup shoot out took place between Everton F. Panathinaikos complained to UEFA and the match was annulled and replayed the following month, [32] [33] with CSKA winning without the need for a shoot-out. The final of the Campeonato Paulista ended in similar circumstances. Santos were leading Portuguesa 2—0 with each Soccer Shootout having taken three shoot-out kicks, when referee Armando Marques mistakenly as each team still had two shots Soccer Shootout take, and therefore Portuguesa still had a chance of levelling the scoreline declared Santos the winners. The first major international tournament to Soccer Shootout decided by a penalty shoot-out was the European Championship Soccer Shootout between Czechoslovakia Soccer Shootout West Germany. UEFA had made provision for a final replay two days later, [36] but the teams decided to use a shoot-out instead. The first penalty shoot-out in the World Cup was on 9 Januaryin the first round of African qualifyingwhen Tunisia beat Morocco. If the final had been drawn, penalties would not have applied unless the replay was also drawn; [39] [40] frompenalties were scheduled after the final as for the earlier knockout rounds. Goalkeepers have been known to win shoot-outs by their kicking. England lost six out of nine penalty shoot-outs in major tournament finals, including losses to Germany in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro the latter following a win over Spain by Soccer Shootout same method in the previous round. After EuroEngland lost four more shoot-outs in a row in major tournament finals, losing to Argentina at the World Cup, Portugal at Euro and the World Cup and Italy at Eurobefore finally breaking their Soccer Shootout streak at the World Cup against Colombia; this shoot-out also allowed England to progress into the quarter-finals Soccer Shootout the first time in twelve years. The Netherlands, meanwhile, lost four consecutive shoot-outs; Soccer Shootout Denmark in EuroFrance in EuroBrazil in the World Cup, and Italy in Eurobefore finally winning one against Sweden in Euro In Eurothe Netherlands had two penalty kicks during the match and four attempts in the shootout but only managed to convert one kick against Italian keeper Francesco Toldo. Frank de Boer had both a penalty kick and shootout kick saved by Toldo, who also saved from Paul Bosvelt to give Italy a 3—1 shootout victory. The Netherlands' fortunes seemed to have improved during the World Cup when they defeated Costa Rica on penalty kicks in their quarter-final, only to lose again on penalties in Soccer Shootout semi-final against Argentina. The Italians have lost six shoot-outs in major championships, notably being eliminated from three consecutive World Cups —, including the final and the Euro Soccer Shootout on penalties. However, they have also won three Soccer Shootout, including the Euro semi-final against the Netherlands, the Euro quarter-final against England, and the World Cup Final against France. On 16 Novembera place in the World Cup was directly determined by a penalty shoot-out for the first time. The FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff between Australia and Uruguay ended 1—1 on aggregate, with Uruguay winning the first leg 1—0 at home and Australia winning the second leg at home by the same score.

Italy had taken the lead through an Ernie Brandts own goal but Brandts himself restored parity before Arie Haan struck the Netherlands' winner. • Italy have held the upper hand over the ensuing three decades, during which they have recorded two draws and six wins against the Oranje, including a penalty shoot-out triumph following a goalless semi-final at UEFA EURO 2000™. • Despite playing against ten men from the 34th minute when Gianluca Zambrotta was sent off, the tournament co-hosts paid the price for two missed penalties during normal time.

Heartbroken Italians have much to be proud of By Gideon Long ROTTERDAM, July 3 (Reuters) - The summer will be long gone before the Italians come to terms with the magnitude and above all the manner of their 2- 1 defeat by France in the European Championship final. As Dino Zoff's players trooped out of the Feyernoord Stadium on Sunday night, their eyes bloodshot from tears, there was little talk of pride and achievement. There was only disbelief. But once the pain has eased and memories of Sylvain Wiltord's late French equaliser have started to fade, Italy will surely look back on Euro 2000 with satisfaction. They have beaten both tournament co-hosts in their own capital cities, proved they have the world's best defence and partially exorcised the ghost of their penalty shootout defeats at the last three World Cups. And above all, they came within seconds of beating World Champions France to take the title. Nothing too much was expected of the Italians when they arrived in Belgium a month ago. They had just lost four of their previous seven matches in one of the worst runs in their 90-year-history as a footballing nation. Even Zoff said only that his squad were capable of reaching the last four. He never mentioned the final or, in public at least, entertained the possibility of winning it. But as soon as they kicked off their opening group match against Turkey it was clear Zoff's Italy meant business. They produced a blistering opening 30 minutes en route to a 2-1 victory and then beat Belgium 2-0 in Brussels.

Back in 1983 the reigning world champions had gone down 3-0 to Sweden as they failed to qualify for the 1984 UEFA European Championship; this time they have made it to Austria and Switzerland at least, but unless they respond in the right manner against Romania, they may not be around for long. • While Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wesley Sneijder and Giovanni van Bronckhorst were putting the Azzurri to the sword in Berne on Monday, Romania claimed a creditable point from their first fixture against France in Zurich, which finished in a 0-0 draw. • Romania will now look to build on that positive opening against the last team to better them on the élite European stage – Italy having prevailed 2-0 when these teams met at UEFA EURO 2000™. • Italy won that quarter-final between the teams 2-0 in Brussels, Francesco Totti and Filippo Inzaghi scoring against a Romania side who lost captain Gheorghe Hagi to a red card on his 125th and final appearance for his country.
