Water Activities Kayaking Number of Participants 180 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:10 Self-Run Possibility BC L2 Coach Timescale 1½–3 hours A challenging activity where pupils learn basic paddling techniques, teamwork and communication skills through a combination of games and instruction both on and off the water. Canoeing Number of Participants 40 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:10 Self-Run Possibility BC L2 Coach Timescale 1½–3 hours These Open Canadian Canoes are much like the ones American Indians used to paddle. Each boat takes up to three paddlers and they are a great way to travel and see the lake and share the experience with friends. This activity can be used to gain BC awards and complete GCSE syllabuses (see page 8). Kata Kanu Number of Participants 40 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:10 Self-Run Possibility BC L2 Coach (1:5 ratio) Timescale 1–2 hours Kata Kanu’s are similar to two Canadian Canoes rafted together. Each Kata Kanu can hold a maximum of five participants. These boats are extremely stable and are great fun. Bell Boating Number of Participants 40 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:10 Timescale 1–2 hours* Bell boats are a fantastic way to introduce groups to watersports and encourage team work. Each bell boat holds a maximum of 10. They are extremely stable and great for racing and having fun. Dragon Boating Number of Participants Min 30, max 120 per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:20 Timescale 1½–2 hours* Nothing beats the atmosphere of dragon boat racing with 15–20 in each boat. Learn paddling techniques and drumming skills to keep the rhythm going before racing each other to see who puts in the winning performance. * Can be combined with another activity for a more varied session. Raft Building Number of Participants 280 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:20 Timescale 2–3 hours Raft Building is an exciting team-building activity. Build a raft – test those knots and then race it on the lake! This activity uses ropes, wooden poles and plastic barrels to test initiative, develop leadership skills and encourage teamwork. 12 tel 01895 824171 website www.hoac.net email [email protected] Water Activities Sailing Number of Participants 8–10 years: 80 max per day 10+ years: 120 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:10 Timescale 2–3 hours HOAC has a wide range of sailing dinghies with RS Teras for the younger sailors and Picos for the older ones. It’s a great way to have fun and learn new skills. This activity can be used to gain RYA awards. Windsurfing Number of Participants 48 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:8 Timescale 2–3 hours This is one of the most exhilarating water sports around. Modern boards and sails have revolutionised learning to windsurf. Taster sessions focus on having fun with board games on the water, followed by step-by-step tuition on our land-based simulator, progressing on to practising afloat. Can be used to gain RYA or NSSA awards. Drascombe Sailing (Suitable for Non-Swimmers) Number of Participants 40 max per day* Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years Ratio 1:10 or 1:5 for non-swimmers Timescale 1–2 ½ hours This stable boat can allow groups of students to enjoy the experience of sailing as a team. Students will learn how to steer the boat and trim the three sails to ensure the boat sails efficiently. This activity is also suitable for those who are unable to swim 10 metres. * Can be twinned with Kata Kanus for swimming groups to get a max of 80 through per day or Orienteering for non swimmers. tel 01895 824171 website www.hoac.net email [email protected] 13 Water Activities Wobble Boards Number of Participants 80 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:10 Self-Run Possibility No Timescale 1–1½ hours This is a fun water session using inflatable SUP boards. The group will experience a variety of exciting games and challenges whilst improving their balance and co-ordination. Stand-Up Paddle Boarding Number of Participants 80 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 8 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:10 Self-Run Possibility No Timescale 1–2 hours An exciting water activity which is growing in popularity. Anyone can quickly pick up the basic skills. As the skills are straightforward the group will quickly progress. Once the basic skills are mastered, touring, racing and games beckon! Great for improving fitness and balance. Sculling Number of Participants 40 max per day Age/Swimming Ability From 11 years / 10 metres Ratio 1:10 Self-Run Possibility BR Level 2 Coach & RYA Power Boat Level 2 Timescale 2–3 hours We have 10 single person sculling boats and three five-person sea-going quads. These boats are suitable for all abilities, but especially beginners. The sessions will build water confidence and develop sculling skills, with plenty of fun and games.
