I found some criteria for early- warning signs of antisemitic, bigoted and genocidal activities. I included a summary of neo-Nazi and white supremacy groups in modern American and then moved to a more specific focus on contemporary and prominent groups like Atomwaffen Division, the Proud Boys, the Vinlanders Social Club, the Base, Rise Against Movement, the Hammerskins, and other prominent antisemitic and hate-driven groups. Trends of hate-speech, acts of vandalism and acts of violence within the past fifty years were examined. Also, how law enforcement and the legal system has responded to these activities has been included as well. The different methods these groups use for indoctrination of younger generations has been an important aspect of my research: the consistent use of hate-rock and how hate-groups have co-opted punk and hardcore music to further their ideology. Live-music concerts and festivals surrounding these types of bands and how hate-groups have used music as a means to fund their more violent activities have been crucial components of my research as well. The use of other forms of music and the reactions of non-hate-based artists are also included. The use of the internet, social media and other digital means has also be a primary point of discussion.

    Angry Aryans Bound for Glory in a Racial Holy War: Productions of White Identity in Contemporary Hatecore Lyrics Thesis Presented in Partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Roberto Fernandez Morales, B.A. Graduate Program in Sociology The Ohio State University 2017 Thesis Committee: Vincent Roscigno, Advisor Hollie Nyseth Brehm Eric Schoon Copyright by Roberto Fernandez Morales 2017 Abstract The Southern Poverty Law Center reports that, over the last 20 years, there has been a steady rise in hate groups. These groups range from alternative right, Neo Confederates, White Supremacist to Odinist prison gangs and anti-Muslim groups. These White Power groups have a particular race-based ideology that can be understood relative to their music—a tool that provides central recruitment and cohesive mechanisms. White supremacist rock, called Hatecore, presents the contemporary version of the legacy of racist music such as Oi! and Rock Against Communism. Through the years, this genre produces an idealized model of white supremacist, while also speaking out against the perceived threats, goals, and attitudes within white supremacist spaces. In this thesis, I use content analysis techniques to attempt to answer two main questions. The first is: What is the ideal type of white supremacist that is explicitly produced in Hatecore music? Secondly, what are the concerns of these bands as they try to frame these within white supremacist spaces? Results show that white supremacist men are lauded as violent and racist, while women must be servile to them. Finally, white supremacist concerns are similar to previous research, but highlight growing hatred toward Islam and Asians.

    ISSN: 2196-8136 Special Issue: Music and Radicalism Ausgabe: 3/2014 From Outcast to Martyr: The Memory of Rudolf Hess in Skinhead Culture Ryan Shaffer 1 Abstract: This article explores neo-Nazi skinhead culture by reviewing how the memory of Rudolf Hess is employed by extremists as a transnational icon. It highlights how Hess, an outcast in the Nazi party and imprisoned by the British, became a “martyr” to post-war fascists in Britain and Germany. This article reviews skinhead music, video and rare literature to show how diverse skinhead groups in many different countries emulated skinhead leaders in resurrecting Hess’ memory and propagating conspiracy. In offering a rare glimpse into skinhead culture, it draws from magazines that were illegally produced and circulated in Europe, which violate race relations laws, deny the Holocaust or contain fascist images or symbols that are banned. The illegal and clandestine nature of the fascist songs and literature reinforced the power of icons like Hess, which in turn fostered a special bond between skinheads in other countries. 1 Ryan Shaffer is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Global Studies at Stony Brook University in New York. No longer isolated in their countries, youth found support beyond their own borders, which reinforced their beliefs and saw the establishment of international concerts where bands drew “nationalists” from neighbouring countries.

  • Targeting White Supremacy in the Workplace
    TARGETING WHITE SUPREMACY IN THE WORKPLACE Michael H. LeRoy* Resurgent white supremacy is leading to segregation in some workplaces and local labor markets, long after Title VII and executive orders dismantled Jim Crow. My research conceptualizes a new way to apply the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871. Much of the law—passed to combat a white terror campaign to deny blacks and their political supporters rights equal to those of white citizens—has been struck down by court rulings. The surviving part, codified in 42 U.S.C. § 1985(3), is limited by its narrow text and Supreme Court rulings that have largely ignored congressional intent in passing this law. Using extensive legislative history, I show that Congress heard testimony from ex-Klan members about the group’s strategy to boycott black workers and segregate them in a caste system that approximated slavery. A major floor speech by Rep. Luke Poland emphasized congressional intent to interdict this economic segregation. I show the relevance of this history by analyzing four current and recent cases involving white supremacist planning and commission of acts to drive blacks, Mexicans, a Jew, and a Navajo from their workplace or a specific labor market. I demonstrate how these cases fit the demanding textual requirements to state a claim under Section 1985(3). In response to a growing number of conspiracies in a work setting to attack minorities, this study provides victims, lawyers, and courts a new way to confront today’s resurgent and aggressive white supremacy movement. The reason for this was the emergence of the National Front. Founded in 1967, the National Front [NF], a right-wing political party, campaigned for an end to ‘coloured’ immigration, the humane repatria- tion of immigrants living in Britain, withdrawal from the European community, and the reintroduction of capital punishment. Even though the NF regarded ‘International Communism as the number one ene- my of civilization’ and ‘International Monopoly Capitalism’ as dangerous an enemy as communism, only one issue was ever likely to arouse the feelings of the masses and that was race. And racial tension was running high because of the large influx of immi- grants from the Commonwealth, which the NF exploited to the full. Indeed, the expul- sion of all Asians with British passports from Uganda by General Idi Amin and their arrival in Britain had ignited widespread popular protests. If ever the political climate was favourable for the growth of an openly racist right-wing party the time was now. The 1973 West Bromwich by-election shocked many when the NF candidate, Martin Webster, managed to poll 16.2 percent of the votes, coming in third and saving his deposit for the first time in the NF’s history. This was a danger sign to the major parties that NF support was on the increase in certain areas, particularly those badly hit by the recession with considerable social problems.

This was due to the oil crisis, coupled with a stock market crash, which left the economy devastated. As the UK attempted to rebuild their country from the World Wars, the government enacted policies that enhanced the economic crisis and caused stagflation. This left citizens disenchanted with their government and resulted in strikes and protests, as people struggled to find employment or earn a livable wage. As tensions grew, much of this resentment shifted towards immigrants and minorities. Many people saw immigrants as a threat to stability, as they felt that the country could not support the influx of more foreign people. Moreover, they believed that immigrants were a threat to the British national identity. The result was the rise of far-right radical parties like the National Front. One of the reactions to this turn towards the right was the emergence of the punk movement. Race relations and punk music has been studied isolated from each other in the past, but very few historians have placed an emphasis on how punk music was used as a tool to mobilize people in the fight against racism.

With the punk scene in the 70's came a rebirth of the skins allthough this time the look was exageated a bit, boots were higher and bleached jeans and combat fatigues could be seen worn by the new breed. During this time a right wing political group known as the National Front NF started using skinheads as pawns polititians both right and left have tried using the scene for their own gain. Shortly a new breed of punk music was born thanks to bands like the cockney rejects, this music was called "OI! Today there seems to be a new trend of extreme left wing skins, redskins, communist,socialist,anarchist, who seem to be being used by politics yet again, most however grow up and realize extremist politics are a no win game.
