Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

DARIECK SCOTT 1 The Not-Yet Justice League: Fantasy, Redress and Transatlantic Black History on the Comic Book Page We rarely call anyone a fantasist, and if we do, usually the label is not applied in praise, or even with neutrality, except as a description of authors of genre fiction. My earliest remembered encounter with this uncommon word named something I knew well enough to be ashamed of—a persistent enjoyment of imagining and fantasizing, and of being compelled by representations of the fantastic—and it sent me quietly backpedaling into a closet locked from the inside, from which I’ve only lately emerged: My favorite film critic Pauline Kael’s review of Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar’s Law of Desire (1987), one of my favorite films, declares, “Law of Desire is a homosexual fantasy—AIDS doesn’t exist. But Almodóvar is no dope; he’s a conscious fantasist …”1 Kael’s review is actually in very high praise of Almodóvar, but Kael’s implicit definition of fantasist via the apparently necessary evocation of its opposites and qualifiers— Almodóvar is not a dope, Almodóvar is conscious, presumably unlike garden- variety fantasists—was a strong indication to me that in the view of the culturally, intellectually and politically educated mainstream U.S., of which I not unreasonably took Kael to be a momentary avatar, fantasy foundered somewhere on the icky underside of the good: The work of thinking and acting meaningfully, of political consciousness and activity, even the work of representation, was precisely not what fantasy was or should be. Yet a key element of what still enthralls me about Law of Desire was something sensed but not fully emerged from its chrysalis of feeling into conscious understanding: the work of fantasy.

Guynes, B.A., Western Washington University M.A., University of Massachusetts Boston Advisor: Aaron Lecklider, Ph.D. Second Reader: Rachel Rubin, Ph.D. Between 1988 and 1994 American comic books engaged the politics, problematics, and crises of the AIDS epidemic by inserting the virus and its social, cultural, and epidemiological effects on gay men into the four-color fantasies of the superhero genre. As the comic-book industry was undergoing major internal changes that allowed for more mature, adult storylines, creators challenged the Comics Code Authority’s 1954 sanction against the representation of homosexuality to create, for the first time, openly gay characters. Creators’ efforts were driven by a desire to recognize the reality of gay men’s lived experiences, especially crucial in the epidemic time of the AIDS crisis.

Really don't think that it held up to the expectations that I had after the first volume. The old man prophet storyline explains aspects of plot while at the same time generates other unknowns. J G Starbuck. Jun 28, Anthony rated it liked it Shelves: image. Brandon Graham. The fact is that the story is interesting, but could have been better, and that's too bad. A second series, written by Chuck Dixon , premiered in and lasted eight issues. The artwork continues to be surreal and sometimes breathtaking, but the storyline is much more "standard" than volume 1, and I fear, just a little, that it is slipping back toward its superhero roots in the unsubtle and, frankly, silly original Prophet series. Old man Prophet is seeking out past allies to aid him in the coming war. Another pet peeve: we are in the second volume of trades, and there still seems to be an ever-expanding alien vocabulary, Prophet continues to be one of the most ambitious comics being published today. It's in an uncomfortable interstitial space between bold and bland. Frankly, I liked the more diffuse volume, as it felt unlike a "standard" comic book, with a much more complex multivariate narrative that I found surreal and intriguing.
