The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C.

Chief Justice McLachlin spent her formative years in Pincher Creek, Alberta and was educated at the University of Alberta, where she received a B.A. (Honours) in Philosophy in 1965. She pursued her studies at the University of Alberta and, in 1968, received both an M.A. in Philosophy and an LL.B. She was called to the Alberta Bar in 1969 and to the British Columbia Bar in 1971 and practised law in Alberta and British Columbia. Commencing in 1974, she taught for seven years in the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia as a tenured Associate Professor. Her judicial career began in April 1981 when she was appointed to the Vancouver County Court. In September 1981, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. She was elevated to the British Columbia Court of Appeal in December of 1985 and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in September 1988. Seven months later, in April 1989, she was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. On January 7, 2000, she was appointed Chief Justice of Canada. She is the first woman in Canada to hold this position. In addition to her judicial duties at the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice chairs the Canadian Judicial Council, the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada and the Board of Governors of the National Judicial Institute. The Chief Justice is the author of numerous articles and publications.

Sept mois plus tard, en avril 1989, elle a prêté serment à la Cour suprême du Canada. Le 7 janvier 2000, elle est devenue la première femme à accéder au poste de juge en chef du Canada. Outre ses fonctions judiciaires à la Cour suprême, la juge en chef préside le Conseil canadien de la magistrature, le Conseil consultatif de l’Ordre du Canada et le conseil de direction de l’Institut national de la magistrature. Mark Cutifani

Mark Cutifani, BE (Mining Engineering), has been Chief Executive of Anglo American since April 2013. He is a member of the Board and Group Management Committee (GMC), is a non-executive director of Anglo American Platinum, Chair of Anglo American South Africa (AASA) and chair of De Beers. Having begun his career in 1976 as a trainee engineer in the Australian coal mines, Mr. Cutifani has since worked across six continents, 25 countries and more than 20 commodities. He has built a reputation based on his broad industry, technical and commercial knowledge, and is recognized as an industry innovator with a track record of building high-performance teams and delivering improvements across all facets of business performance. In his previous role as CEO of AngloGold Ashanti, Mr. Cutifani led the revitalization and restructuring of its global mining business, delivering significant business improvements, ranging from safety, operations, capital discipline and project delivery, exploration and financial restructuring. Mr. Cutifani has also held the positions of COO for Inco and Vale’s global nickel business, as well as senior executive positions with the Normandy Group, Sons of Gwalia, Western Mining Corporation, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines and CRA (Rio Tinto). With a leadership style that puts its focus on people development, accountability and the delivery of sustainable value, Mr. Cutifani has placed an emphasis on developing strong investor, labour, industrial, government and community relationships.

Suzanne Tessier

Sue Tessier, a Sudbury native, holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mineral Processing degree from Laurentian University. She is the very first woman to graduate from the School of Engineering, and is currently a member of the Bharti School of Engineering Advisory Board. She spent her early career as a process engineer involved in process improvements, research and development, and environmental compliance at the Copper Cliff Smelter Complex. She retired in 2013 after 34 years in the mineral industry with Inco/Vale at the Copper Cliff processing plants. One of Sue Tessier’s greatest passions has been encouraging young girls and women to consider science and engineering as career choices, introducing them to the possibility of engineering as a career, and mentoring new women engineers in the mining industry. Ms. Tessier has been involved with the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) since 1997. She was the Education Chair from 1997–2000 and the Vice-Chair from 2001–2002. In 2003, she became the first woman Chair of CIM and is presently the Donations Chair for the CIM’s Sudbury Branch. She is currently the Chief Warden of Camp 22 – The Calling of the Engineer and performs the Iron Ring Ceremony, induction rites for Laurentian University graduates. Ms. Tessier has also been a judge at the Sudbury Regional Science Fair for 33 years and is involved in events such as GoEngGirl (Program to encourage Grade 6 to 8 girls to consider engineering as a career) and WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Science Olympics. Sue Tessier was also elected to the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) Board of Directors in 2014 and has been a member of Professional Engineers of Ontario since 1985.

Originaire de Sudbury, Mme Sue Tessier est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en génie (traitement des minéraux) de l’Université Laurentienne. Elle est la première diplômée de l’École de génie et est un membre du conseil consultatif de l’École de génie Bharti. Au début de sa carrière en tant qu’ingénieure au complexe de la fonderie de Copper Cliff, elle a participé à l’amélioration des procédés, à la recherche et au développement et à la conformité aux règles et aux normes environnementales. En 2013, elle a pris sa retraite après 34 ans dans l’industrie des minéraux chez Inco/Vale aux usines de transformation de Copper Cliff. L’une des grandes passions de Mme Tessier est d’encourager les jeunes filles et femmes à considérer la science et l’ingénierie comme carrière, une passion qui l’a conduite aussi à les initier à la possibilité d’une carrière en génie et à encadrer de nouvelles ingénieures dans l’industrie minière. Mme Tessier est associée depuis 1997 à l’Institut canadien des mines, de la métallurgie et du pétrole (ICM) et en a été la présidente de l’éducation de 1997–2000 et vice-présidente de 2001 à 2002. En 2003, Mme Tessier est devenue la première présidente de l’ICM et elle est actuellement présidente du Comité de dons de la section sudburoise de l’ICM. De même, elle est gardienne en chef du Camp 22, L’Engagement de l’ingénieur, et préside à la Cérémonie de l’anneau de fer, le rite d’engagement solennel des diplômés en ingénierie de l’Université Laurentienne. Par ailleurs, Mme Tessier est depuis 33 ans membre du jury de l’Expo-sciences régionale de Sudbury et prend une part active à des événements comme GÉNIales les filles (programme encourageant les filles de la e6 à la 8e année à réfléchir à une carrière en génie) et les Jeux olympiques scientifiques de WISE (Les femmes en sciences et en génie). André Picard

André Picard is the public health journalist at The Globe and Mail and is one of Canada’s top public policy writers. Originally from North Bay, his work has been enormously important in some neglected policy areas, including most recently the treatment of thalidomide survivors, the death toll of asbestos, the growing need for palliative care, and the virtual absence of treatment for adolescent girls suffering from eating disorders. Mr. Picard is also well informed on the complexities of federal-provincial fiscal relations in health, including Health Canada’s abdication of responsibility in several areas, such as the rising use of opioids. He is the author of the best-selling books CRITICAL CARE: Canadian Nurses Speak For Change and THE GIFT OF DEATH: Confronting Canada’s Tainted Blood Tragedy. He is also the author of A CALL TO ALMS: The New Face of Charity in Canada. Mr. Picard has received much acclaim for his writing, including the Michener Award for Meritorious Public Service Journalism, the Canadian Policy Research Award and the Atkinson Fellowship for Public Policy Research. In 2002, he received the Centennial Prize of the Pan-American Health Organization as the top public health reporter in the Americas. In 2005, he was named Canada’s first Public Health Hero by the Canadian Public Health Association, and in 2007, he was honoured as a Champion of Mental Health. André Picard’s advocacy work has been recognized by a number of consumer health groups, including Safe Kids Canada, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness, and the Canadian Hearing Society.

Dr. Charles E. Pascal

Charles E. Pascal is Professor of Applied Psychology and Human Development, OISE/ University of Toronto. He is an internationally respected Canadian educator with expertise in early and higher education, public policy and leadership development. In 2007, the Premier of Ontario appointed Dr. Pascal as his Special Advisor on Early Learning. His seminal report With Our Best Future in Mind: Implementing Early Learning in Ontario has informed policy and practice across and outside of Canada. In 1982, he became the second president of Sir Sandford Fleming College. In 1987, Premier David Peterson appointed Dr. Pascal as Chair of the Ontario Council of Regents for the province’s colleges of applied arts and technology. He has held several Ontario deputy minister positions including the Premier’s Council on Health, Well-Being and Social Justice, the Ministry of Community and Social Services, and Education and Training. In 1996, Dr. Pascal was selected as the first full-time Executive Director of the Atkinson Charitable Foundation that promotes social and economic justice. Dr. Pascal and his teenage daughter, Tai, recently published their book, Too Far from Perfect: A Father-Daughter Conversation about Public Education. Dr. Pascal is completing his next book, Confessions of a Public Servant: Hard-earned leadership lessons, due in the Summer of 2016. Dr. Pascal holds a PhD in Psychology (Michigan) and has received recognition from many organizations to date, including two honorary doctorates and three honorary diplomas. Dr. Pascal is a member of the Order of Canada.

Joseph Roberts

Joseph Roberts, CEO of Skidrow and Canadian motivational speaker, is an inspirational example of overcoming adversity and managing change. In 1989, he was living under a bridge as a homeless skid row addict. Today, Mr. Roberts is an author, CEO and internationally sought after professional speaker who motivates and inspires audiences worldwide. Born and raised in Barrie, Mr. Roberts was a drug user at the age of nine, and quickly moved on to alcohol, marijuana, LSD, and cocaine as a young teenager. In 1991, Mr. Roberts declared himself drug-free after entering an alcohol and drug intensive treatment program. He then began a business marketing program at Loyalist College, made the Dean’s list and graduated in 1995 with a 3.94 GPA. In 1998, Mr. Roberts began speaking to youth about drug prevention and drug abuse issues in schools, and soon established a foundation to help him achieve his goals pertaining to drug prevention. As founding member and Executive Director of The Push for Change Foundation, he is dedicated to youth drug prevention and has spoken to over 80,000 youth since 1999. Mr. Roberts is the author of Fred the Cat – The Eye and Soul of an Addict and Don’t Buy the Lie About Getting High. His most recent book 7 Secrets to Profit from Adversity shares seven principles which help people to profit from past troubles. Mr. Roberts is the recipient of many awards including, 40 under 40 Business in Vancouver (2001), MacLeans Magazine’s Honour Roll (2003), Ontario Premier’s Award (2003), BC Courage to Comeback Award (2003), and 45 over 45 Award: Zoomer Magazine (2012).

Steve Paikin is the anchor of TVO’s flagship current affairs program The Agenda with Steve Paikin. He has produced and hosted a variety of current affairs programs for Ontario’s educational broadcaster for more than 20 years, and is also well-known as the moderator of six federal and provincial leaders’ debates during election campaigns. Mr. Paikin first joined TVO in 1992. Throughout his career, he has consistently set new standards of excellence in broadcast current affairs. As host ofThe Agenda, Mr. Paikin plays a vital role in engaging Ontarians in the issues shaping the province. One of the most intelligent and respected interviewers and moderators in Canadian media, Mr. Paikin has elevated the level of discourse on subjects such as politics, religion and culture, science and technology, the economy and the environment, both in terms of balance and accessibility. Mr. Paikin has written seven books, the newest of which, a biography on former Ontario premier Bill Davis, will be published in October 2016. In 2013, Mr. Paikin was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and in 2014 he was appointed to the Order of Ontario. He was named Chancellor of Laurentian University in June 2013.

Chancellor of Laurentian University The Chancellor of the University is a volunteer appointed by the Board of Governors. The Chancellor is the titular and ceremonial head of the University and assists the University in its advocacy, advancement activities, and national recognition efforts. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the Chancellor of Laurentian University will:

• Act as an ambassador for the University; • Preside over Convocation and confer degrees; • Serve as a member of the Board of Governors; • Participate in, or preside over, ceremonial or other important events on campus; • Represent the University in an official capacity at external functions from time to time; • Perform a strong leadership role on behalf of the University; • Engage in profile-raising activities; • Assist in advancement activities (friend-raising and fund-raising); • Advocate directly, or through a network of connections, for the post-secondary system, and for Laurentian University in particular; • Provide advice to the President and Vice-Chancellor. Academic Hoods

Convocation is an impressive ceremony, steeped in dignity and decorum, which is conducted according to long-standing traditions. The colourful academic regalia – caps, gowns, and hoods – worn by teaching and administrative staff are a legacy from medieval universities such as Paris, Bologna, Oxford, and Cambridge. They indicate the university from which its bearer graduated and the highest degree awarded to that person. Most of the distinctive characteristics appear in the hood. Originally a practical element of dress, the hood has evolved into a separate and purely ornamental article, draped over the shoulder and down the back. The hoods worn by graduands are either bordered or lined with colours that indicate the degree to be conferred.

La vie universitaire est ponctuée de rites dont celui de la collation des grades. Celle-ci est une cérémonie impressionnante, empreinte de dignité et de décorum, qui se déroule selon des traditions anciennes. Les atours académiques colorés – toques, toges et épitoges – que revêtent les membres des corps professoral et administratif sont un héritage de l’époque médiévale, plus précisément d’universités telles que celles de Paris, de Bologne, d’Oxford et de Cambridge. The Mace is a symbol of authority and guidance. It is shouldered by the Macebearer who, clothed in a specially designed gown, leads the procession of graduands, faculty, members of the Board of Governors, special guests, the Chancellor, and the President and Vice- Chancellor, into the auditorium to participate in the Convocation ceremony. When the entire procession has entered, the Mace is placed on a designated pedestal before the Chancellor, at the front of the stage. It remains there until the closure of the Convocation ceremony, at which time it is borne again by the Macebearer who leads the Convocation procession out of the auditorium. Laurentian’s Mace was designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt. It was crafted from Sudbury metals – copper and nickel – and adorned with golden studs, representing strength and power. The university’s crest is engraved at the tip of the shaft. This gift from The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), Elizabeth Fry Chapter, was presented to the University at their annual dinner on May 17, 1966.

La Masse est un symbole d’autorité et de gouverne. Elle est portée par le massier qui, revêtu d’une toge spécialement conçue, mène à l’intérieur de l’auditorium le cortège formé des diplômés, du corps professoral, des membres du Conseil des gouverneurs, des invités spéciaux, du chancelier et du recteur et vice-chancelier pour participer à la cérémonie de la collation des grades. Lorsque le cortège entier a fait son entrée, la Masse est déposée à l’avant de la scène, devant le chancelier, sur un socle destiné à cet effet. Elle y demeure jusqu’à la fin de la cérémonie, moment auquel le massier la reprend pour conduire le cortège à l’extérieur de l’auditorium. La Masse de l’Université Laurentienne est l’oeuvre de Dora de Pedery-Hunt. Elle a été confectionnée à partir de métaux trouvés dans la région de Sudbury – le cuivre et le nickel – et ornée de cloutages dorés qui représentent la force et le pouvoir. L’écusson de l’Université est gravé au bout du manche de la Masse. Ce cadeau de l’Ordre impérial des filles de l’Empire, section Elizabeth Fry, a été présenté à l’Université lors du banquet annuel de l’Ordre tenu le 17 mai 1966.

The Laurentian University Pipe Band Le Corps de cornemuses de l’Université Laurentienne

The Laurentian University Pipe Band was created in 2006, under the leadership of David Young, BA (Hons), and Derek Young. The band wears specially designed kilts, based on the “Ramsay” (Scottish spelling) tartan and family crest, due to the significance of the Ramsey name in the City of Greater Sudbury. The kilts have been woven to include the Laurentian University colours, blue and gold.

Le Corps de cornemuses de l’Université Laurentienne a été créé en 2006 sous la direction de David Young, BA (Hons), et Derek Young. Les membres de ce groupe portent des kilts spécialement conçus, s’inspirant du tartan et du blason de la famille « Ramsay » (orthographe écossaise), en raison de l’importance de ce nom dans la région du Grand Sudbury. L’étoffe des kilts inclut les couleurs de l’Université Laurentienne, à savoir le bleu et or. O Canada O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command.
