This thesis explores the films produced by leftist filmmakers of the 1930s which reflect the contemporary urban life in Shanghai. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter I introduces the historical and cu tural background from which the leftist urban film movement emerged, together with a brief summary of Chinese cinema history before 1930. Chapter II discusses the factors that triggered the leftist film movement - why individual dramatists and the film producers chose this style under the influence of leftist ideology. Chapter HI discusses the themes and characteristics of leftist films. Chapter IV analyzes two representative films, Crossroads and Street Angel. Ronald Green _____________________ Professor Patricia Sieber Adviser East Asian Languages and Literatures Graduate Program Copyright by Ying Bao 2008 ABSTRACT This dissertation is a revisionist study examining the production and consumption of comedy film—a genre that has suffered from relative critical and theoretical neglect in film studies—in a culturally understudied period from 1949 to 1966 in the People’s Republic of China. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, it scrutinizes the ideological, artistic, and industrial contexts as well as the distinctive textures of Chinese comedy films produced in the so-called “Seventeen Years” period (1949-1966). Taking comedy film as a contested site where different ideologies, traditions, and practices collide and negotiate, I go beyond the current canon of Chinese film studies and unearth forgotten films and talents to retrieve the heterogeneity of Chinese cinema. The varieties of comedy examined—mostly notably the contemporary social satires in the mid-1950s, the so- called “eulogistic comedies,” and comedian-centered comedies in dialect and period comedies, as well as lighthearted comedies of the late 1950s and the early 1960s— problematize issues of genre, modernity, nation, gender, class, sublimity, and everyday ii life in light of the “culture of laughter” (Bakhtin) within a heavily politicized national cinema. -

Sino-US English Teaching, June 2021, Vol. 18, No. 6, 165-168 doi:10.17265/1539-8072/2021.06.006 D DAVID PUBLISHING Difficulties in Poetry Translation ZHAO Dan University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai, China Some artistic characteristics of poetry distinguish it from other literary genres. This paper mainly discusses the difficulties in poetry translation, including those in translating linguistic features, poetic features, poetic spirit and cultural connotation, especially with examples of translating ancient Chinese poems into English. Keywords: translation, poetry translation, difficulty Poetry is defined as “writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language meaning, sound, and rhythm”. It is the art of employing words in such a manner as to produce an illusion on the senses: the art of doing by means of words what the painter does by means of colors. There is rhythm, metrical rhythm; emotion, sensuous emotion; an increasing use of figures of speech and a degree of disregard for conventional word order; imagination, and above all, an ability to see features in an object or a situation which another, not a poet, might miss. All these characteristics distinguish poetry from other literary genres and also give rise to the difficulties in translating a poem from one language into another. Difficulty in Translating Linguistic Features In most cases, the difficulties in poetry translation are caused by the linguistic differences between the source language and the target language, which are obvious obstacles in poetry translation. Barnstone (1993) pointed out that because the words and grammar of each language differ from every other language, the transference of a poem from one language to another involves differing sound and prosody.
