PROTOSIREN SMITHAE, NEW SPECIES (MAMMALIA, SIRENIA), FROM THE LATE MIDDLE EOCENE OF WADI KITAN, EGYPT Abstract-Protosiren smithae is a new protosirenid sirenian described on the basis of associated cranial and postcranial material from the late middle Eocene (latest Bartonian) Gehannam Formation of Wadi Hitan (Zeuglodon Valley), Fayum Province, Egypt. The new species is similar to Protosiren fraasi Abel, 1907, from the earlier middle Eocene (Lutetian) of Egypt, but it is younger geologically and more derived morphologically. P. smithae is probably a direct descendant of P. fraasi. The postcranial skeleton of P. imithae- includes well-developed hindlimbs, which suggest some lingering amphibious tendencies in this otherwise aquatically-adapted primitive sea cow. -

Geodiversitas 35 (4): 815-940. http://dx.doi.org/g2013n4a5 ABSTRACT e newly discovered Upper Miocene to Upper Pliocene San Gregorio assem- blage of the Purisima Formation in Central California has yielded a diverse collection of 34 marine vertebrate taxa, including eight sharks, two bony fish, three marine birds (described in a previous study), and 21 marine mammals. Pinnipeds include the walrus Dusignathus sp., cf. D. seftoni, the fur seal Cal- lorhinus sp., cf. C. gilmorei, and indeterminate otariid bones. Baleen whales include dwarf mysticetes (Herpetocetus bramblei Whitmore & Barnes, 2008, Herpetocetus sp.), two right whales (cf. Eubalaena sp. 1, cf. Eubalaena sp. 2), at least three balaenopterids (“Balaenoptera” cortesi “var.” portisi Sacco, 1890, cf. Balaenoptera, Balaenopteridae gen. et sp. indet.) and a new species of rorqual (Balaenoptera bertae n. sp.) that exhibits a number of derived features that place it within the genus Balaenoptera. is new species of Balaenoptera is relatively small (estimated 61 cm bizygomatic width) and exhibits a comparatively nar- row vertex, an obliquely (but precipitously) sloping frontal adjacent to vertex, anteriorly directed and short zygomatic processes, and squamosal creases. -

Laguna de Tamiahua is ecologically and economically important as a nursery area that favours the recruitment of species that sustain traditional fisheries. It has been studied previously, though not throughout its whole area, and considering the variety of habitats that sustain these fisheries, as well as an increase in population growth that impacts the system. The objectives of this study were to present an updated list of fish species, data on special status, new records, commercial importance, dominance, density, ecotic position, and the spatial and temporal distribution of species in the lagoon, together with a comparison of Tamiahua with 14 other Gulf of Mexico lagoons. Materials and methods. Fish were collected in August and December 1996 with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl from different habitats throughout the lagoon. The species were identified, classified in relation to special status, new records, commercial importance, density, dominance, ecotic position, and spatial distribution patterns. -

A species of fish with small, black spots and a yellowish-brown body, head and base of tail. On the anterior base of the dorsal fin and in the middle of the back are two or more white-rimmed, large, black spots. The eyes are large with a gold iris surrounded by a ring of black dots, and above each eye is a large projection (Fig. 1). The body is round and has the ability to inflate or expand. There are no pelvic fins; large pectoral fins without spines; nine caudal fin rays; few motionless, short spines covering the body and head. The teeth are fused and the nasal organ is a hollow, short tentacle with two openings. Size usually 15-30cm, but males can grow up to 38cm. Young fish up to 3cm inhabit the water column (Smith, 1997). DISTRIBUTION. Range is the Gulf of Mexico from northwestern Cuba, Florida Keys, south from Cape Canaveral along the U.S. coast, the Bahamas, the Caribbean Sea with the exception of the Cayman Islands. Found on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean (Fig. 2). The bridled burrfish is native to Trinidad and Tobago (Leis et al., 2015). Poster Presentations Anthropogenic Impacts Interacting influence of low salinity and nutrient pulses on the growth of bloom-forming Ulva compressa Guidone, M.; Steele, L. [email protected] For the eastern US, it is predicted that climate change will increase the frequency of severe rainstorms, inundating coastal areas with pulses of freshwater that will reduce salinity but also temparily increase nutrients through sewage overflow and storm runoff. In an effort to predict how this may influence the frequency and severity of macroalgal blooms, this study examined the interacting effect of salinity and nutrient supply on bloom-forming Ulva compressa. In laboratory experiments with constant nutrient supply, U. compressa showed decreased growth at low salinities; however, this decrease was not detectable until the fifth day of treatment. Moreover, U. compressa demonstrated an extraordinary tolerance for freshwater, surviving for 48 hours without nutrients at 0 PSU. When exposed to pulses of freshwater (0 PSU) and varying nutrient levels (none, low, high) lasting either 0.5, 4, or 8 hours, U. compressa growth was negatively impacted in the treatment without nutrients and positively impacted by the low and high nutrient treatments. Furthermore, thalli in the high nutrient treatment showed increased growth with increased pulse time. These findings, combined with observations of U. compressa’s tolerance for high temperatures, suggest Ulva blooms will not decrease in frequency or severity with a change in precipitation patterns.
