Fort Monroe Authority REQUEST FOR STATEMENT OF INTEREST Memorial Project to Commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the First Landing of Africans in English Occupied North America Old Point Comfort at Fort Monroe Hampton, Virginia April 1, 2019 Introduction The Fort Monroe Authority (FMA), in partnership with the Fort Monroe Foundation (FMF), the National Park Service (NPS), the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and Project 1619, are working as collaborative Stakeholders to identify and encourage prominent artists to submit a Statement of Interest (SOI) for the creation and construction of a Memorial Project suitable for the Commemoration of the 400th Anniversary of the First Landing of Africans in English occupied North America 1619-2019. The project will include significant public engagement with a wide range of community stakeholders for the purpose of creating a lasting tribute to the spirit of the first Africans who landed at Point Comfort and helped shape this nation. Background Fort Monroe, also known as Old Point Comfort, is the site of the first landing of Africans in English occupied North America. In the latter part of August 1619, an English ship, the White Lion, flying a Dutch flag, landed at Point Comfort. Its cargo was “twenty and odd Africans,” captured from a slave ship in the Gulf of Mexico. These Africans had been violently captured from the Ndongo region of Angola, Africa and were being transported to Vera Cruz, Mexico to be sold as slaves when their ship was attacked by English privateers looking for gold or silver. The White Lion traded her human cargo of Africans at Point Comfort and thus created the first landing of Africans on English occupied territory in North America. -

Children in Nature 71 2 Part 1 The Foundation 3 Introduction The Long Range Interpretive Plan A Long Range Interpretive Plan (LRIP) provides a 5+ year vision for a park’s interpretive program. A facilitator skilled in interpretive planning works with park staff, partners, and outside consultants to prepare a plan that is consistent with other current planning documents. Part 1 of the LRIP establishes criteria against which existing and proposed personal services and media can be measured. It identifies themes, audiences, audience experiences, and issues. Part 2 describes the mix of services and facilities that are necessary to achieve management goals and interpretive mission. It includes implementation charts that plot a course of action, assign responsibilities, and offer a schedule of activity. When appropriate, Appendices provide more detailed discussions of specific topics. The completed LRIP forms a critical part of the more inclusive Comprehensive Interpretive Plan (CIP). -

AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE IN HAMPTON - ONE-DAY TRIP • Arrive in Hampton and visit the Hampton History Museum. Founded in 1868, the same year as the university, it is among the oldest museums in Virginia. The collection of more than 9,000 objects and works of art is representative of cultures and nations from around the world and is the largest of its kind in southeastern United States. • Continue your Hampton University experience with a tour of the waterfront campus. The campus contains five National Historic Landmarks. First opened in 1868 as the Hampton Normal & Agricultural Institute, the school was dedicated to the education of thousands of newly freed Southern slaves. The school provided African Americans with the manual and teaching skills they would need to survive in post-Civil War America. Campus sites include the Memorial Chapel, the Booker T. Washington Memorial Garden & Statue and Emancipation Oak, where Hampton residents gathered in 1863 to hear President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation read for the first time. -

Explore Hampton’s contributions to space flight and the first steps on the Moon. Be there for the ribbon cutting of the restored “Little Joe” rocket. The event is free and open to the public. Be among the first to see the fully restored “Little Joe” rocket that played a key role in testing systems for the Moon mission. SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Regular Session i October 28, 2013 10. PUBLIC HEARING NAT TURNER TRAIL OPENING STATEMENT This public hearing is held pursuant to § 15.2-2204, Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended to receive public comment on a proposed resolution requesting the Commonwealth Transportation Board of Virginia to establish a transportation enhancement project (MAP-21 Transportation Alternatives Program) to develop the next phase of the Nat Turner Trail. The project seeks to acquire up to $240,000 in federal enhancement funds which, if acquired, must be matched with other local funding sources (Southampton County Historical Society) of at least $60,000. Among other things, project funding for this phase of the project may be used to construct ADA compliant sidewalks leading from the Rebecca Vaughan House to 17 additional sites located in the Town of Courtland. The new sidewalks will facilitate pedestrians moving between 6 museums, the public library and the Southampton County Courthouse complex as well as the 17 interpreted Nat Turner Rebellion sites. Funds may also be used to develop and construct parking facilities at the Rebecca Vaughan House. Included in your agenda packages are a number of exhibits to give you some perspective of the project. There is an aerial photo illustrating the walking trail in Courtland, complete with planned sign locations and the proposed text for each sign. There is also an exhibit illustrating the sign layout and specifications. The notice of public hearing was published in the Tidewater News on October 13 and October 20, 2013 as required by law. After conclusion of the public hearing, the Board of Supervisors will consider the comments offered this evening and will proceed to adopt, reject or defer action on the proposed resolution. -

It is the outgrowth of a short article for the " Atlantic Monthly " to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the vessel's launch. She has so long been a favorite topic for stoiytellers and writers that nothing new remains to be told. It is rather a case for recall- ing much that has been forgotten. As the forma- tion and service of the sailing navy supply the background which brings our ship into stronger perspective, all the circumstances which had an in- fluence upon her design, construction, and employ- ment are given. WhUe, therefore, in no sense a history of the Navy, it forms* a reasonably con- nected narrative of naval events, and particularly of our good old frigate. -

Sallie Anne Acree (1837–1873) kept this scrapbook while living at Forest Home in Bedford County; it contains newspaper clippings on religion, female decorum, poetry, and a few Civil War stories. Adams Family Papers, 1672–1792. 222 items. Mss1Ad198a. Microfilm reel C321. This collection of consists primarily of correspondence, 1762–1788, of Thomas Adams (1730–1788), a merchant in Richmond, Va., and London, Eng., who served in the U.S. Continental Congress during the American Revolution and later settled in Augusta County. Letters chiefly concern politics and mercantile affairs, including one, 1788, from Martha Miller of Rockbridge County discussing horses and the payment Adams's debt to her (section 6). Additional information on the debt appears in a letter, 1787, from Miller to Adams (Mss2M6163a1). There is also an undated letter from the wife of Adams's brother, Elizabeth (Griffin) Adams (1736–1800) of Richmond, regarding Thomas Adams's marriage to the widow Elizabeth (Fauntleroy) Turner Cocke (1736–1792) of Bremo in Henrico County (section 6). Papers of Elizabeth Cocke Adams, include a letter, 1791, to her son, William Cocke (1758–1835), about finances; a personal account, 1789– 1790, with her husband's executor, Thomas Massie; and inventories, 1792, of her estate in Amherst and Cumberland counties (section 11). Other legal and economic papers that feature women appear scattered throughout the collection; they include the wills, 1743 and 1744, of Sarah (Adams) Atkinson of London (section 3) and Ann Adams of Westham, Eng. -

Present Owner: Mid-Atlantic Region National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Customs House Second and Chestnut Streets Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19106 Present Use: Vehicular roadway Significance: The establishment of the Colonial Parkway in the 1930s made the historic sites at Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown more accessible to the ever expanding motoring public. The parkway's designers, through the use of a curved three-lane road with an exposed aggregate surface, intended this highway to serve not only a means for visitors to enjoy the park but also to limit the speed and numbers of vehicles on the road itself. The parkway's bridges and tunnel, all relatively small and sparsely ornamented, reflect the desire of the planners for these structures to complement the natural environment of the Colonial National Historical Park. -
