The medicinal plant NU. guianensis (Rubiaceae) cultured in vitro produce four oxindole alkaloids that displays anti-tumoral activity. Natural products can be modified by several approaches, one of which is precursor-directed biosynthesis (PDB). Thus, the aim of this work was apply precursor-directed biosynthesis approach to obtain oxindole alkaloids analogues using in vitro Uncaria guianensis. Plantletes were cultivated into culture medium supplemented with 1mM of 6-fluoro-tryptamine, the indol precursor of alkaloids biosynthesis. U. guianensis explants were maintained at 25±2°C, 55-60% relative humidity under the same photoperiod and light intensity. After 30 days, a methanolic extract from U. guianensis was obtained and analysed by HPLC- DAD analytical procedure. The chromatogram showed four natural alkaloids (mitraphylline, isomitraphylline, rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline and four additional peaks. Semi-preparative HPLC allowed isolation and purification of these four oxindole alkaloids analogues and the identity of the peaks was confirmed from high-resolution MS data (HRESIMS/MS in positive mode). All data confirmed that Uncaria guianensis produced fluoro-oxindole alkaloids analogues. Biography Adriana A Lopes is from Universidade de Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. Lanthanide(III) ions offer good opportunities to fine tune the out-of-plane distances, utilizing the well-known lanthanide contraction. The UV-Vis absorption bands of SAT complexes represent redshift compared to the free-base ligand. SAT complexes can be used as photocatalysts in redox reactions, as photosensors in the medical science in luminescence imaging and as polymer diodes in cancer treatment. We investigated the reaction between the 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin and early lanthanide(III) ions (La-Gd), as well as the effect of the ionic strenght, the temperature and the potential axial ligands on these processes. The structures of different complexes were identified on the basis of their UV-Vis absorption spectra. The bidentate O-donor acetate and glycol, as well as the monodentate ethanol and chloride can enhance the coordination of the first porphyrin ligand, due to their axial effect, but they can hinder the connection of an additional porphyrin. In the presence of non-coordinating perchlorate anion, bisporphyrins can form, too. At lower temperatures, the lanthanide(III) ions were not able to coordinate into the cavity of the macrocycle, to the softer pyrrolic nitrogens, rather to the sulfonato groups, to the harder oxygens; resulting in the formation of the free-base ligands’ tail-to-tail dimer. So the coordination position of metal ion can be influenced by temperature. Biography Melitta Patrícia Kiss got her MSc degree in Chemistry at University of Pannonia, Veszprém, Hungary. It can be successfully applied for Hdegradation of various organic pollutants into harmless or less harmful compounds. The efficiency of this technology can be increased in multiple ways, thus it has the flexibility for being used in practical application. The efficiency can be significantly enhanced by the combination with other oxidative procedures such as ozonation and by using new kind of catalysts or modifing their surface with precious metals. The latter helps the charge separation therefore slows down the recombination of holes and electrons. Furthermore with the “coloring” of the semiconductor there is a possibilty to extend the light absorption range of the catalyst to the visible light wave lengths. Our research group studied TiO2 and kaolinite based heterogenous photocatalysis by the degradation of different model compounds. In this work, we summarize our results regarding the mineralization of benzenesulfonic acid and oxalic acid on the previous two catalysts. Keeping the Tenvironmental aspects in mind, new procedures should be developed. Triton X-100 is one of the most widely applied man- made nonionic surfactants. This detergent is utilized as both household and industrial cleaning agent. Triton X-100 can hardly be degraded by biological treatment under anaerobic conditions, and even in aerobic systems it can be just partly mineralized. Thus, it can reach natural waters, damaging various living organisms there. Hence, application of a more efficient degradation method is indispensable for the total mineralization of this surfactant. A possible solution of this problem is the application of heterogeneous photocatalysis. It is an advanced oxidation process that uses UV irradiaton to form highly reactive radicals on the surface of a semiconductor catalyst. We have thoroughly examined the photocatalytic degradation of Triton X-100 under various circumstances. The process was monitored by following the spectral changes, the organic carbon content, and the actual concentration (UHPLC method). It has been established that Triton X-100 could be mineralized by TiO2 mediated heterogeneous photocatalysis However, one obstacle to the in field use is that if the catalyst is used in slurry form, the catalyst separation from the liquid phase is difficult and makes the technology more expensive. This problem can be eliminated if the catalyst is immobilized. We managed to create a foil catalyst from poli(vinyl-alcohol) and Degussa P25 TiO2 which is capable of breaking down the modell compound. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT In order to identify potential central nervous system (CNS) active principles from plants, 10 Chinese herbs have been selected from literature reports, namely Schejflera hodinieri, Schejflera delavayi, Celastrus angulatus, Celastrus orbiculatus, Clerodendrum mandarinorum, Clerodendrum bungei, Periploca callophylla, Periploca forrestii, Alangium plantanifolium and Uncaria rhynchophylla. These plants were extracted by 70% ethanol and biologically screened by receptor ligand binding assays which included a 1-adrenoceptor, a2-adrenoceptor, p-adrenoceptor, 5HT1, 5HT1A, 5HT1C, 5HT2, opiate, benzodiazepine, Ca^-ion channel(DHP), K^-ion channel, dopamine 1, dopamine 2, adenosine 1, muscarinic, histamine 1, Na'^/K^ ATPase, GABA^ and GABAg receptors. The results of extract screening showed that all these plants were able to inhibit the specific binding of radioligands to at least one receptor at concentrations of 1 mg/ml.

The present monograph outlines the lessons we have learned from both conducting the studies and identifying common patterns in the results. The main product of our studies is a five-step treatment protocol to reverse any chronic disease, based on the following systemic medical principle: at the present time, removal of cause is a necessary, but not necessarily sufficient, condition for restorative treatment to be effective. Implementation of the five-step treatment protocol is as follows: FIVE-STEP TREATMENT PROTOCOL TO REVERSE ANY CHRONIC DISEASE Step 1: Obtain a detailed medical and habit/exposure history from the patient. Step 2: Administer written and clinical performance and behavioral tests to assess the severity of symptoms and performance measures. Step 3: Administer laboratory tests (blood, urine, imaging, etc) Step 4: Eliminate ongoing contributing factors to the chronic disease Step 5: Implement treatments for the chronic disease This individually-tailored chronic disease treatment protocol can be implemented with the data available in the biomedical literature now. It is general and applicable to any chronic disease that has an associated substantial research literature (with the possible exceptions of individuals with strong genetic predispositions to the disease in question or who have suffered irreversible damage from the disease).

Methods: The neurotoxicity of MA was measured with MTT assay in primary cultured cortical neurons. The viability of neurons treated MA for 48 h combined with Rhy or ketamine was also tested. Results: MTT assay showed that MA had a nurotoxicity on rat cortical neurons and Rhy could protect against MA in culture viability. Conclusion: Rhy shows neuroprotective effect against MA in vitro. This property may also contribute to the neural activity of the origin of Uncaria species plants. These results suggest rhynchophylline may benefit for the treatment of MA exposure. Repeated drug administration produces many changes of the brain functions. N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, a kind of ionotropic glutamate receptor, is involved in mediating biological actions of the drug abuse, especially the psychostimulants (1). It was reported that MA appears to have a toxic effect on the neurons with a long-time exposure (2). In the present study, the neurotoxicity of MA was examined in cortical neurons which were abundant with NMDA receptors.

Since the kinetics and electro- efficiency of the process strongly depend on the noble metal formulations and their dispersion on suitable support, an intensive research is devoted to decrease the catalyst loading. This work reports an improved electro-catalytic activity for ethanol oxidation at Pt-Ru co-deposited surfaces on MWCNT support. Pt-Ru catalysts with different compositions were synthesized on pre- functionalized MWCNT by adopting sol method. The degree of surface functionalization is found to depend on the level of acid treatment. Chemical reduction of precursor salt using ethylene glycol as mild reducing agent as well as capping agent at 1400C yields catalyst particle size of few nanometers as confirmed by XRD and TEM studies. Cyclic voltammetry, polarization study and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were employed to evaluate the electro-catalytic phenomenon over a range of H2SO4 and ethanol concentrations. A spectacular negative potential shift of more than 250 mV of the onset of ethanol oxidation was observed on the Pt-Ru catalyst in comparison to Pt alone.
