Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School December 2019 i Abstract B. H. Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

The Law of Chastity Chapter 39 A Note to Parents This chapter includes some parts that are beyond the maturity of young children . It is best to wait until children are old enough to understand sexual relations and procreation before teaching them these parts of the chapter . Our Church leaders have told us that parents are responsible to teach their children about procreation (the process of conceiving and bearing children) . Parents must also teach them the law of chastity, which is explained in this chapter . Parents can begin teaching children to have proper attitudes toward their bodies when children are very young . Talking to children frankly but reverently and using the correct names for the parts and functions of their bodies will help them grow up without unneces- sary embarrassment about their bodies . Children are naturally curious . They want to know how their bod- ies work . They want to know where babies come from . If parents answer all such questions immediately and clearly so children can understand, children will continue to take their questions to their parents . However, if parents answer questions so that children feel embarrassed, rejected, or dissatisfied, they will probably go to someone else with their questions and perhaps get incorrect ideas and improper attitudes . It is not wise or necessary, however, to tell children everything at once . Parents need only give them the information they have asked for and can understand . While answering these questions, parents can teach children the importance of respecting their bodies and the bodies of others . Parents should teach children to dress mod- estly .

  • Fear in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a Pathway to Reconciliation
Fear in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a Pathway to Reconciliation Meandering Philosophy and Musings Mingled with Scripture Revision B By Tom Irvine Email: [email protected] July 4, 2020 To fear God is to have absolute reverence and awe for an Almighty God, the Creator of all things. But the fear discussed in this paper is worry and dread over potential loss or calamity. This fear can include angst regarding a pending change, even though that change may be a needed growth opportunity, or otherwise bring blessings. The fear may be deeply rooted in a person’s subconscious due to genetic predispositions or past traumatic experiences. Furthermore, fear can exist on an individual or an institutional basis. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has accomplished an immeasurable amount of good for innumerable souls by providing a faith community for like-minded people, offering disaster relief to those in distress and in so many other ways. In addition, the LDS Church provides excellent education opportunities through its BYU campuses and the BYU Pathway program. 1 But the Church has traumatized others via certain fear-based policies and unrighteous dominion. Some trauma victims leave the Church and may never return. Others are the “walking wounded” who still participate in Church for social or altruistic reasons even though their bubbles have burst, or their “shelves” have broken. This paper is neither a vindication of the Church nor an expose. Rather it is a paper that wrestles with some real and messy issues with the hopes that some mutual understanding and peaceful reconciliation can be achieved.

  • The Plan of Salvation What Is the Plan of Salvation? the Plan of Salvation* Is God’S Plan for the Happiness of His Children
THE PLAN OF SALVATION WHAT IS THE PLAN Of SALVATION? The plan of salvation* is God’s plan for the happiness of His children. It is centred on the Atonement of Jesus Christ. If you will follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, you will find lasting inner peace in this life and eternal joy after death. As you learn about the plan of salvation, you will find answers to these questions: “Where did I come from?” “What is my pur pose in life?” “Where will I go after this life?” WHERE Did I COME FROM? Your life did not begin at birth, nor will it end at death. You are made up of a spirit body (sometimes called the soul) and a phys ical body. Your Heavenly Father created your spirit, and you lived with Him as a spirit “ before you were born on earth. You he plan of [salvation] T knew and loved Him, and He knew . was prepared from the and loved you. This period is called foundation of the world, pre-earth life. through Christ, for all whosoever would Throughout your pre-earth life, believe on his name.” you were taught the principles and Alma 22:13 commandments that would lead to happiness. You grew in intelligence and learned to love the truth. You were taught about the plan of salva tion. During this pre-earth life, Jesus Christ was chosen as the Saviour; you learned that through Him you would be able to overcome the effects of your wrong choices. *Words in red are defined on pages 18 and 19.

  • The Three Kingdoms
Are There Three Kingdoms in Heaven? www.makinglifecount.net Mormons teach that there are three kingdoms (celestial, terrestrial, telestial) in the afterlife. They base this belief on 1 Cor. 15:40-42: There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead.” Mormons teach the 3 degrees of glory in the afterlife are explained by the 3 degrees of glory of the sun, moon, and stars. Telestial Kingdom—This is the lowest of the kingdoms and all who enter will be forever living apart from the presence of Father and Jesus. The telestial glory is typified by the stars, as the people who will live here will be as innumerable as the stars. Because there are differences in the stars, there are also differences in the degrees of glory one may receive here. Terrestrial Kingdom—This glory is typified by the moon. All those who rejected the Mormon gospel in life but accept it in the spirit world will live here. They will become ministering servants to those of the telestial kingdom. No marriages are permitted in this kingdom. They will forever remain unmarried, cannot achieve the state of exaltation, and although they will have the presence of the Son, they will not receive the fullness of the Father. Celestial Kingdom— Only LDS members and children who die before the age of eight are permitted into this kingdom.
