Pearsons Property Auction Wednesday 31 August 2016 Pearsons Property Auction Wednesday 31 August 2016 Commencing at 11am at The Hilton Hotel, Ageas Bowl Cricket Ground West End, Southampton SO30 3XH Part of the national Auction House network Notes from the Rostrum When I wrote these notes earlier in the month the sun was pouring in through the office window and it was the perfect blue sky day. At the end of August you can never be sure but hopefully summer is still with us and you have all enjoyed this recent bank holiday. As usual we have another exciting collection of properties on offer, spread throughout Hampshire and there should be something of interest for everyone. Within the 15 lots available there are 3 pieces of land. One being a plot for agricultural use, a paddock and a building plot for a pair of semi- detached houses. The remainder are various residential properties, ranging from a bargain price retirement flat, to 3 other flats all perfect for renting out, a little terraced house in Portsmouth and several semi-detached houses all in need of updating. In Fareham there is the opportunity to buy a detached bungalow on a large plot. Southampton has 2 larger properties by way of a 9 bedroom house or a 3 bedroom house with flat and studio attached. Lastly in the sought after location of Sparsholt is a pretty and nicely refurbished cottage with plenty of parking and stunning countryside views. I look forward to seeing you all on the 31st August for our 6th auction of the year. • The Itchen Navigation Fits Into This Pattern, Being Authorised by an Act of Parliament of 1665 and Carrying Its Last Barge, Loaded with Coal, up to Winchester in 1869
THE ITGHEN NAVIGATION By EDWIN COURSE THE development of land transport by road and rail has taken most of the traffic from the inland waterways of Britain. In the past they provided the easiest means of moving heavy and bulky goods such as coal or timber, but the combined competition of coastal steamers, railways and mechanised road transport has taken much of their traffic and left many miles of abandoned routes. There were two main types of inland waterway - the navigations, which were improved rivers, and the canals, which were artificial cuts, sometimes crossing water sheds with the aid of locks and other engineering works. Many navigations were com pleted in the late 17th and early 18th centuries and many canals, in the latter half of the 18th and the first decades of the 19th century. Because of their special suitability for heavy freight, they were more important and more successful in the new industrial regions than in the south of England. Many of the navigations and canals of the south were in financial difficulties before the coming of the railways; few survived to carry commercial traffic for long after their opening. The Itchen Navigation fits into this pattern, being authorised by an Act of Parliament of 1665 and carrying its last barge, loaded with coal, up to Winchester in 1869. Although the Act of 1665 gives no indica tion, it is probable that some use was made of the Itchen for transport purposes in earlier times. But the relics which have survived over the iof miles from Woodmill, near Southampton, to Blackbridge Wharf at Winchester almost certainly belong to the period 1666 to 1869, with which this account is concerned.

  • Itchen Ferry Village Education Pack
ITCHEN FERRY VILLAGE EDUCATION PACK ITCHEN FERRY EDUCATION PACK TEACHERS NOTES AND CONTENTS The information contained in this pack provides a good basis for a worthwhile project based on the history of Itchen Ferry Village. This lost village, almost destroyed by enemy action and now subsumed into the suburb of Woolston, was once described as ‘the most interesting village on the banks of the Itchen’. The pack covers a wide range of topics connected with the history of Itchen Ferry Village. It is chiefly directed at Key Stage 2 students (aged 10 – 11) but can be adapted to suit other ages and abilities. There are plenty of opportunities for cross-curricular work with links to English, History, Drama, Geography, Mathematics, Science, Music, Sport and Art. The Pack is presented in ‘manageable’ chunks, each with a ‘suggested follow up’ activity to support a range of curriculum subjects. Again, these can be adapted to suit the needs of individual classes. (The section on Smugglers, for example, could include the effect of ‘Chinese whispers’, be extended to dramatisation, be limited to an acrostic poem, or a ‘Wanted’ poster of a well- known local smuggler, detailing description / characterstics / aliases / crimes etc). Clearly, all the activities may be extended to stimulate thought, debate and imagination (not necessarily in that order). For more able students, it may lead to such questions as ‘How far does Geography determine / influence History?’ (Particularly relevant in the case of Itchen Ferry Village) Follow up activities such as ‘Find out about the role of the Spitfire in World War II’, utilising a range of sources (internet, books, interviews, etc) can lead to valuable independent research and widen collaborative effort.

  • Southampton Cycling Campaign Top Ten Priorities
SOUTHAMPTON CYCLING CAMPAIGN TOP TEN PRIORITIES AND QUICK FIXES These are suggested improvements to key routes or junctions that would not only make life easier and safer for current cyclists, but once carried out would encourage NEW people to cycle. This would contribute to the improvement of the air quality and would be a significant step towards Southampton becoming a cycle-friendly city. The list comprises locations and suggestions for improvement submitted by members and is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather the start of an on-going project aimed at transforming the city environment for the benefit of all. Southampton Cycling Campaign looks forwards to consultation on the locations included in the document. This document includes the following: Section 1: Locations requiring significant infrastructure work to make them safe for cyclists 1) Bitterne Rd West and Gyratory 2) Roundabouts at the Hill Lane/Burgess Rd/Winchester Rd junction 3) The Avenue between Burgess Rd and Winn Rd 4) St Denys Rd 5) Shirley High St/Shirley Rd 6) Bitterne Rd East/Thornhill Park Rd 7) Civic Centre Rd/Western Esplanade access to south side of station from city centre 8) Albert Rd North/Saltmarsh Rd/Itchen Bridge/Central Bridge junction 9) Central Station Bridge 10) City Centre Section 2: Quick Fixes: locations which require minor improvements to make them “cycle- friendly”. These are, for the most part, easy and inexpensive yet would significantly improve the experience of cycling around Southampton. The section is by no means exhaustive but includes some of the locations most frequently raised by Southampton cyclists with the Cycling Campaign over the last 25 years as well as some more general city-wide issues – resurfacing, upgrading of traffic lights and speed reduction.
