Andreas i Abstract This dissertation provides an examination of Hanif Kureishi’s work, focusing on the shifting and polyvalent manifestations of desire and sexuality within the social and cultural realms during the last three decades in Britain, and the way in which these manifestations operate ideologically. With the transitional and critical period of 1980s Britain as a starting point, Kureishi’s narrative representations open up spaces in the British cultural landscape to include –intentionally– the marginalised and politically disenfranchised. The dynamics of racial and sexual identity in Britain are explored, primarily drawing on postcolonial theory, with the basic contention that Kureishi’s work interrogates hegemonic discourse on the formation of identities in Britain. By critically examining Kureishi’s characters in literature and film, desire and sexuality are re-imagined as a means of disrupting ongoing discussions on identity and the nation, and re-inventing others on a range of questions that pertain to the South Asian diaspora in Britain. These questions gesture to the complex constitutions of diasporic identity/ies as well as to the way in which, supposedly conflicting, entities can engage in a difficult and complex, yet fruitful relationship, thus enabling them to avoid what are considered by the mainstream as “social abnormalities”. Kureishi’s “queer” characters disrupt seemingly uniform spaces and subvert traditional understandings of nation and ideas of belonging in Britain, and allow affective terms, such as desire, to be used to re-imagine the nation. Kureishi’s work (visual and textual) is deliberately placed alongside the author’s own development as a postcolonial subject performing his racialised identityAthanasiades and employing his unique artistic potential in a post- imperial metropolis. Given that the circumstances of his personal life are –more often than not– tangential with all of the political, social and theoretical parameters with which his work is concerned, the interaction between Kureishi’s different identities as a person and as a writer proves to be significant as he is read as an cultural instigator and hence, as an influential contributor to contemporary culture. Andreas ii Περίληψη Η παρούσα διατριβή εξετάζει το έργο του Hanif Kureishi, επικεντρώνοντας στις μεταβαλλόμενες και πολυσήμαντες έννοιες της επιθυμίας και της σεξουαλικότητας, όπως αυτές λειτουργούν μέσα στην κοινωνική και πολιτική σφαίρα της Βρετανίας των τελευταίων τριάντα ετών, καθώς και στον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι έννοιες αυτές λειτουργούν σε μια ιδεολογική διάσταση. Παίρνοντας ως σημείο έναρξης τη μεταβατική και κρίσιμη περίοδο της δεκαετίας του 1980, οι αφηγηματικές αναπαραστάσεις του Kureishi δημιουργούν χώρους στο Βρετανικό πολιτισμικό πεδίο που συνειδητά και κατ’ επιλογήν περιλαμβάνουν τους πολιτικά περιθωριοποιημένους. Με βάση τη μετα- αποικιακή θεωρία, εξετάζονται οι δυναμικές της φυλετικής και σεξουαλικής ταυτότητας στη Βρετανία, με τη βασική παραδοχή να είναι ότι το έργο του Kureishi αμφισβητεί ηγεμονικές αφηγηματικές πραγματείες που αφορούν τη δημιουργία των ταυτοτήτων στη Βρετανία. Εξετάζοντας κριτικά τους χαρακτήρες του Kureishi τόσο στο γραπτό λόγο όσο και στον κινηματογράφο, βλέπουμε πως οι έννοιες της επιθυμίας και της σεξουαλικότητας αναδιατυπώνονται ως τρόποι αμφισβήτησης των κατεστημένων αντιλήψεων της ταυτότητας και του έθνους, αλλά και ως τρόπος επανεφεύρευσης άλλων τρόπων αντίληψης της θέσης της Νοτιοασιατικής διασποράς στη Βρετανία. Αυτά τα ερωτήματα συγκλίνουν προς την κατεύθυνση της αποδοχής της πολύπλοκης φύσης των διασπορικών ταυτοτήτων καθώς και προς τον τρόπο με τον οποίο υποθετικά συγκρουόμενες οντότητες μπορούν να εμπλακούν σε μια δύσκολη και πολύπλοκη μεν, αλλά και γόνιμη σχέση, κάτι που τους επιτρέπει να παρακάμψουν την ιδεολογική ετικέτα της «κοινωνικής ανωμαλίας». Οι «queer» χαρακτήρες του KureishiAthanasiades διασπούν φαινομενικά ομοιόμορφους χώρους και υπονομεύουν παραδοσιακές αντιλήψεις της έννοιας του έθνους και των ιδεών που αφορούν το «ανήκειν» στη Βρετανία, επιτρέποντας σε «διαθετικούς» όρους, όπως η επιθυμία, να χρησιμοποιηθούν ούτε ώστε να επαναπροσδιοριστεί ή έννοια του έθνους. Το έργο του Kureishi (οπτικό και κειμενικό) εξετάζεται σκόπιμα παράλληλα με την εξέλιξη του συγγραφέα ως μετα-αποικιακού υποκειμένου, ερμηνεύοντας την ίδια στιγμή την φυλετική του ταυτότητα και αξιοποιώντας τις καλλιτεχνικές του προοπτικές σε μια μετα- αυτοκρατορική μητρόπολη όπως είναι το Λονδίνο.     Copyright Alexander Adkins 2016 ABSTRACT Postcolonial Satire in Cynical Times by Alexander Adkins Following post-1945 decolonization, many anticolonial figures became disenchanted, for they witnessed not the birth of social revolution, but the mere transfer of power from corrupt white elites to corrupt native elites. Soon after, many postcolonial writers jettisoned the political sincerity of social realism for satire—a less naïve, more pessimistic literary genre and approach to social critique. Satires about the postcolonial condition employ a cynical idiom even as they often take political cynicism as their chief object of derision. This dissertation is among the first literary studies to discuss the use of satire in postcolonial writing, exploring how and why some major Anglophone global writers from decolonization onward use the genre to critique political cynicisms affecting the developing world. It does so by weaving together seemingly disparate novels from the 1960s until today, including Chinua Achebe’s sendup of failed idealism in Africa, Salman Rushdie’s and Hanif Kureishi’s caricatures of Margaret Thatcher’s enterprise culture, and Aravind Adiga’s and Mohsin Hamid’s parodies of self-help narratives in South Asia. Satire is an effective form of social critique for these authors because it is equal opportunity, avoiding simplistic approaches to power and oppression in the postcolonial era. Satire often blames everyone—including itself—by insisting on irony, hypocrisy, and interdependence as existential conditions. Postcolonial satires ridicule victims and victimizers alike, exchanging the politics of blame for messiness, association, and implication. The satires examined here emphasize that we are all, to different degrees, mutually implicated subjects, especially in the era of global capitalism.

Emphasizing authors, as well as film, from Africa, the Levant, and India in the diaspora in London from the mid-1960s through 1990, the reading of both postcolonial lands and subjects as “queer counterproductive” space reveals a depiction of bodies in these texts as located in and performing “queer space and time.” I argue that the first wave of postcolonial literatures and film produced by diasporics present the body as the site where the non-normative is performed, revealing the beginnings of a corporeal resistance to the re-colonization of the diasporic individual residing in England from the Wilson through the Thatcher regimes.

    Berlinale 2001 Report By Ron Holloway Spring 2001 Issue of KINEMA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL BERLIN 2001 IT fit the 2001 Berlinale (7-18 February 2001) like a glove: Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 -- A Space Odyssey as the closing night presentation. For back at the 1981 Berlinale, when Martin Scorsese delivered a fiery, passionate lecture on ”Color Fading,” he cited 2001 in particular to underscore the dilemma of colour preservation. Thanks to his efforts, and those of dedicated film archivists, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) has now been restored to its original pristine colour photography -and was the undeniable hit of the Berlinale. When one recalls that Berlinale director Alfred Bauer had laboured far into the night to book Kubrick’s 2001 for the 1968 festival -- a failed effort now fulfilled -- this made for a particularly poignant evening. Stanley Kubrick’s widow attended the screening, together with his brother-in-law Jan Harlan, whose documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures was programmed as part of the tribute. And since Kirk Douglas was also being honoured with a festival homage, Kubrick’s Paths of Glory (1957) was equally well received at its special screening in the Berlinale Palast on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz. Surely the 51st Berlinale will be long remembered for its splendid Fritz Lang retrospective, the accompanying exhibition in the recently opened Filmmuseum Berlin, and the Special Screening of his classic Metropolis (Germany, 1925/26). Indeed, sellout crowds enthusiastically applauded the screenings, the silent films were shown with live musical accompaniment, the ”FL” catalogue runs 512 pages, and the exhibition is now scheduled to go on tour -- to Vienna, Paris, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
