About 62 percent of Finland’s current surface area has been covered by the waters of the Baltic basin at some stage. The highest shorelines are located at a present altitude of about 220 metres above sea level in the north and 100 metres above sea level in the south-east. The nature of the Baltic Sea has alter- nated in the course of its four main postglacial stages between a freshwater lake and a brackish water basin connected to the outside ocean by narrow straits. This article provides a general overview of the principal stages in the history of the Baltic Sea and examines the regional influence of the associated shore displacement phenomena within Finland. The maps depicting the vari- ous stages have been generated digitally by GIS techniques. Following deglaciation, the freshwater Baltic Ice Lake (12,600–10,300 BP) built up against the ice margin to reach a level 25 metres above that of the ocean, with an outflow through the straits of Öresund. At this stage the only substantial land areas in Finland were in the east and south-east. Around 10,300 BP this ice lake discharged through a number of channels that opened up in central Sweden until it reached the ocean level, marking the beginning of the mildly saline Yoldia Sea stage (10,300–9500 BP). -

Warm,saline waters (ca. 10–15 psu) entered the site from the North Sea within the first few hundred years of the Eemian, corresponding to the Pinus–Betula (E1) or Pinus–Betula–Ulmus (E2) regional pollen assemblage zones (RPAZ). By about 300 years (beginning of RPAZ E3),dinoflagellate cyst assemblages were already indicating summer sea-surface salinities in excess of about 15 psu and temperatures that perhaps exceeded 27C. Warm and saline conditions of 15–20 psu or more,at least twice present levels, persisted throughout the early Eemian. A rise in sea level at Licze appears to correlate with a similar event in eastern Denmark,as both coincide with the increase in Corylus (ca. 750 years into the interglacial). -

The diatom stratigraphy of the Eemian Baltic Sea on the basis of sediment discoveries in Ostrobothnia, Finland. Geological Survey of Finland, Report of Investigation 102, 26 pages and 16 figures. Sediments from interglacial sites in Ostrobothnia, western Finland have been in vestigated for their diatom content. All the sites are correlated with the Eemian interglacial stage. The diatom successions of two of the sites, Norinkylä (Teuva) and Viitala (Perä• seinäjoki), begin with freshwater diatoms indicating deposition in a freshwater (great lake) basin. A rich marine diatom flora is found overlying the sediments with fresh water diatoms. The other sites Evijärvi, Ollala (Haapavesi) and Ukonkangas (Kär• sämäki), have also a similar marine flora with Grammatophora oceanica, Hyalodiscus scoticus, Paralia sulcata and Rhabdonema arcuatum as dominant species . The flora also includes many diatoms that mainly thrive in highly saline water and have not been found in Finland earlier. In the Ollala and Norinkylä deposits, there is a tran sition from marine to freshwater diatoms implying isolation from the sea. The marine deposits at the sites are interpreted as having been deposited in the Eemian Baltic Sea, and the freshwater sediments found beneath the marine deposits in a lake which occupied the Baltic basin and preceded the Eemian Baltic Sea. The history of the Eem!an Baltic Sea is discussed and a comparison is also made with the Holocene Baltic basin. -

An estimation of the conditions at the Aspo island (southeast Sweden) has also been made during this time span. The knowledge about Late Pleistocene (Eemian Interglacial and Weichselian glacial) is not yet fully understood. There are still a lot of assumptions concerning this period and more information is needed to be able to establish the climatic conditions. This is not the case for the Weichselian deglaciation and the present interglacial, Holocene, for which the environmental conditions are quite certain. -

The course of shore displacement is fragmentarily known for Sweden, since brackish-marine sediments have been identified, on the basis of diatom analysis, at only few sites. In Finland, on the other hand, a shore- displacement curve has been constructed for the Eemian Baltic Sea in Ostrobothnia, central western Finland. The vegetation history is summarised for the southernmost part of Sweden, and can be correlated with that documented in Denmark. For the central part of Sweden, information is sparse, but the composition of the forests has been outlined for most of the interglacial, although information on regional pollen assemblage zones E3 and E4 (early-temperate substage) are main ly missing. A more complete picture of the interglacial vegetational history is known from Ostrobothnia in Finland. The ther- mophilous indicators Viscum, Ilex, Hedera and Osmunda grew far North during the Eemian. Corylus and Carpinus expanded much further to the North than during the Holocene. In Swedish and Finnish Lapland, the vegetation history is similar ex cept that Larix was common in Finland during the Eemian, but its presence has so far not been confirmed in Sweden. Eemian deposits relocated during the Weichselian glaciation contain pollen and diatoms that can be used for reconstruction of the Eemian environment. -

Till-covered sediments containing marine diatoms have been found at Norinky lä (Teuva) and Ukonkangas (Kärsämäki) in Ostrobothnia, western Finland. The different types of diatom stratigraphy at these sites are described, and the sites are correlated with the Eemian interglacial stage. At Norinkylä, Eemian marine deposits are underlain by freshwater deposits whose diatom flora contains the same taxa as the Holocene Ancylus Lake. The deposits of the Eemian Baltic Sea proper at Ukonkangas and Norinkylä have a rich marine diatom flora with the same taxa as encountered earlier in Eemian deposits in Ostrobothnia. The phases of the Eemian Baltic Sea are discussed. Finland, Baltic Sea Abstract: A comparison is made of Flandrian and Eemian movements in the earth's crust mainly within Fennoscandia. The Flandrian phases of the Baltic and the movements associa ted with these ate well known in broad outline. The ptedominant factot involved in postglacial shoreline displacement in the notthern pan of the Baltic atea has been land uplift, which was veiy rapid immediately aftet the deglaciation, but had slowed down considerably in the early Holocene time. The centre of land uplift is located close to the assumed centte of the ice sheet towards the end of the Weichselian. Only fragmentaty infotmation is available on movements in the earth's crust during the Eemian intetglacial, but those deposits which have been studied would seem to suggest that no shoreline displacement of the type recorded in Late Weichselian and Flandrian times took place at all duting the Eemian. Thus it is obvious that the isostatic ctustal movements that took place at that time must have diffeted fundamentally ftom the postglacial pattern. The differences have been explained mostly by suggesting that a large part of the Eemian land uplift may have taken place beneath the rapidly melting Saale ice sheet, which had already decreased in thickness and begun to stagnate over extensive areas, and that the centre of the ice sheet at the end of the Saale (Warthe) glaciation probably lay considetably further east than that of the Weichselian ice. -

Background The bedrock in Sweden mainly comprises Proterozoic magmatic and metamorphic rocks older than a billion or one and a half billion years with few easily distinguished testimonies for the younger history. For construction of a geological repository for deposition of nuclear waste it is important to understand the late, brittle, geological events to be able to estimate its influence and consequences for the repository. Purpose The purpose of the current project is to compile published data related to the geological history of the Baltic Basin. The intention of the study is to contribute to the understanding and characterization of earlier and on-going and bedrock deformation in coastal areas outside Forsmark and Laxemar where the Swedish Nuclear Waste Management Co (SKB) recently has finished site investigations for a repository for spent nuclear fuel. Of special interest are structures with evident indications of late bedrock movements where also future movements cannot be excluded.
